Eli Adams had always been a gatherer of stones.

He kept them in a shoebox under his bed. The box had once held a pair of his mother's winter boots, and it still smelled faintly of leather and the cedar block she put in her closet to keep moths away. Inside the box, each stone rested on a small square of tissue paper, and each stone had a label. Eli had written the labels himself, in careful pencil, on strips of masking tape.

GRAVEL LOT BEHIND LAUNDROMAT. APR 14. LAKE SHORE, VERMONT. AUG 3. (SKIPPED TWICE FIRST.) STORM DRAIN ON MAPLE STREET. OCT 19. (AFTER RAIN.) UNDER THE BLEACHERS, DAY OF THE RACE.

There were forty-seven stones in the box now, and each one told him a small story. Not a big story, because stones did not tell big stories. Stones were not like books. Stones were like commas, he thought sometimes, or like the space between two words. They were the quiet part. They were the part that held the rest together.

On the morning his father came to pick him up, Eli was sitting cross-legged on the bedroom floor, the box open in front of him, trying to decide whether to bring it.

He wanted to bring it. That was the truth.

But he was also afraid. He was afraid that something might happen to it in the car, or in his uncle's house in South Carolina, or on the long road between here and there. He was afraid that his father might see the box and laugh. His father did not seem like a laughing kind of man, from what Eli remembered, but it had been a while since Eli had seen him up close, and people could change in a while.

"Eli?" his mother called from the kitchen. "He just texted. He's ten minutes away."

"Okay," Eli said.

He said it quietly. She could not have heard him. But that was all right. His mother always gave him a few seconds to catch up with the news before asking him again.

He closed the shoebox. He placed it on top of his folded T-shirts inside his suitcase. The suitcase was old and blue and had a wheel that wobbled, and it had belonged to his grandfather on his mother's side, who had been a chemistry teacher and who had died when Eli was seven. Eli had liked his grandfather, who had smelled of peppermints and old paper. He was glad to be carrying a piece of him on this trip.

He zipped the suitcase.

He stood up.

He looked around the bedroom, which was small and square and had a window that looked out on a maple tree, and he tried to memorize it, because he would be gone for three weeks, which was longer than he had ever been gone from this room in his whole life.

Three weeks. Twenty-one days. In a place he had never been, with people he barely knew.

"Eli?"

"Coming, Mom."

He carried the suitcase out into the hallway and down the stairs, bumping it gently on each step. In the kitchen, his mother was standing at the sink, washing a coffee cup she had already washed once. Her hair was pulled back in a loose bun. She was wearing the old gray cardigan she always wore when she was nervous.

"Do you have your toothbrush?" she said.

"Yeah."

"Your inhaler? In case?"

"I don't really need it anymore."

"Bring it."

"I brought it."

"Socks?"

"Mom."

She turned around and leaned against the counter and looked at him. She was trying not to cry. He could tell because she was smiling very hard.

"You're going to have a good time," she said.

"I know."

"And if you don't have a good time, you can call me any minute of any day, and I will come and get you. I don't care if it's three in the morning. I don't care if it's the middle of a hurricane. I will get in the car and I will come."

"Mom. It's South Carolina. Not Mars."

She laughed. It came out a little wet. "I know. I know it's not Mars. It's just — it's far."

"It's a day."

"It's a day in a car," she said. "Which feels like a week."

He went over to her and she put her arms around him and for a moment he was surprised, the way he was always a little surprised, by how small she was. People at school thought his mother was tall because she stood very straight when she taught. But she wasn't. She came up to his shoulder now. He had grown two inches this spring, and he had not yet gotten used to the new way his body reached.

"Your father loves you," she said into his hair. "I want you to remember that. Whatever happens. Whatever you two talk about or don't talk about. He loves you. He has always loved you."

"Okay."

"And Uncle Odell is a good man."

"Okay."

"I only met him the one time, at the wedding, but he had kind eyes. You look for a person's eyes. Eyes tell you things words can't."

"Okay, Mom."

A horn sounded in the driveway — two short friendly beeps.

She let go of him.

"You packed your book?" she said.

"Two books."

"Good. Good. Okay."

She walked him out onto the porch. The porch was small and painted green and had a wind chime made of old keys that had belonged to houses Eli's grandmother had lived in. The chime tinkled lightly now, even though there was barely any wind.

His father's car was a silver sedan, newer than Eli remembered. His father was leaning against the driver's side, hands in his pockets, wearing a plain black T-shirt and jeans. He was taller than Eli remembered, too, though that couldn't be right. Maybe it was just that Eli had been picturing him, these last weeks, from the old photo on the refrigerator, where his father was sitting in a kitchen chair holding baby Eli up in both hands like a trophy.

"Rachel," his father said, to Eli's mother. He nodded.

"Marcus."

"Thank you for — "

"Of course."

They were being polite with each other in a careful way that made Eli want to look at his shoes. He looked at his shoes.

"Hey, buddy," his father said.

"Hey, Dad."

"Ready?"

Eli nodded.

His father took the suitcase from him and loaded it into the trunk. Eli stood on the porch and his mother stood on the porch and they watched him do it. Then his father closed the trunk and came around and stood by the passenger door.

"You got five minutes," his father said quietly to his mother. "Take your time."

She hugged Eli one more time. She smelled like coffee and like the lavender hand cream she used and, underneath both of those things, like his mother, which was a smell he did not know how to describe except that it was the smell of being loved without having to earn it.

"Go," she whispered. "Go gather your stones."

He got into the car.

His father got in on the other side. He started the engine. He looked over.

"You all right?"

"Yeah."

"You sure?"

"Yeah."

"All right, then."

They pulled out of the driveway. Eli kept his face turned toward the window. He watched his mother on the porch until she was just a small gray smudge, and then not even that, and then the trees closed over the road behind them and she was gone.

For the first hour, they didn't say much.

His father drove with both hands on the wheel. He played music low — something with horns, a jazz piece Eli didn't know. Now and then his father tapped a thumb on the steering wheel in time with a drum Eli couldn't quite hear.

"You hungry?" his father said, finally.

"Kind of."

"There's a place up here I like. Gas station, but they do a biscuit."

"Okay."

The gas station was in a town so small Eli wasn't sure it was a town. It was just a bend in the road with a red-white-and-blue sign and two pumps and a dog sleeping on the concrete by the front door. Inside, a woman with a gray braid smiled at Eli's father like she knew him.

"Marcus," she said.

"Hey, Mae."

"On the road?"

"Headed down."

"Tell Odell I said hey."

"Will do."

She wrapped up two biscuits in wax paper. They were warm through the paper and smelled of butter.

Back outside, Eli's father paid for the gas, and Eli wandered around the edge of the lot. His feet did this automatically. He did not decide to look for a stone. He simply looked, the way a person breathes, and then his eye caught on something bright, and he bent down, and it was a small flake of mica, about the size of a thumbnail, gleaming silver-gold against the asphalt.

He picked it up.

He held it in the middle of his palm.

It wasn't heavy. It weighed almost nothing. Mica never did. But it caught the light and sent it back in a hundred tiny flashes, like a mirror made for fairies.

"Whatcha got?"

His father was behind him, holding the biscuits.

"Mica," Eli said. And then, because his father was still standing there, he added, "I collect stones. Kind of. Little ones."

His father looked at the mica in Eli's hand.

Something passed across his face. Eli couldn't read it. It came and went before he could catch it.

"Huh," his father said. "Is that right."

"Yeah."

"You want to keep that one?"

"If that's okay."

"Yeah. Sure. Keep it."

MAE'S STATION, ROUTE 9. JUNE 11. FIRST DAY WITH DAD.

And he would set the mica on top of a folded shirt in a corner of the suitcase where it wouldn't get lost, and he would zip the suitcase closed, and in the morning they would drive south again, farther south than he had ever been, toward a place where the trees would wear beards of Spanish moss and the air would smell of salt and green water and old things remembering themselves.

But right now, in the parking lot of Mae's station, he just climbed back into the car with his father, and his father handed him a biscuit, and they drove on.

"Mica was my brother's favorite," his father said, after a while.

Eli looked over.

"When we were little," his father said. "Odell loved the shiny ones. He used to say mica was the sky's way of hiding in the dirt."

Eli wrote that sentence down, later, in his head. He did not have paper with him. But he kept it there, behind his eyes, where the good sentences lived.

He ate his biscuit.

He watched the trees begin to change.

The light changed, too, as they drove south.

Up home in New Jersey, where Eli lived with his mother, the summer light was flat and white, and it came through the trees in clean slices. Down here in the Low Country, the light was slower. It hung in the air like something poured. It got caught in the Spanish moss that drooped from the live oaks, and it filtered through the moss in soft gold-green bars, and by the time it reached the ground it had been strained like tea.

They turned off the highway onto a narrower road, and then off that road onto a still narrower one, and then off that one onto a rutted dirt track that ran between two stands of pine. The car bumped. The suitcase thumped in the trunk. A blue jay flew up out of a bush like a startled idea.

"Almost there," his father said.

Eli rolled down his window all the way.

The air that came in was thick. It was the thickest air he had ever breathed. It smelled of salt and of the green mud of marshes and of something sweet that he could not name, something flowering, and of wood smoke from somewhere up ahead, and underneath everything a low damp earth smell that was not bad, not at all, but was more alive than any smell he had ever smelled.

It smelled like a place that knew itself.

That was the closest he could come to it.

"There," his father said.

A yellow house.

It was small and square and painted a pale soft yellow, the color of butter left out a minute too long. It had a tin roof that had rusted in patches and a porch that wrapped around two sides, and on the porch there were four rocking chairs, and in one of the rocking chairs there was a girl.

She was reading a book. She had her feet up on the porch rail. She did not look up when the car pulled in. She turned a page very deliberately, as if to say, *I am not interested in whatever just arrived.*

"That's Zhuri," his father said.

"Odell's granddaughter. She's spending the summer. She's a good kid."

"Okay."

"Bit prickly."

"Okay."

"You'll be fine."

He said it in the way parents say *you'll be fine* when they themselves are not entirely sure.

The screen door of the yellow house opened, and a man came out.

The man was tall. He was taller than Eli's father, though bent slightly at the shoulders, as people who have done a lifetime of hard work sometimes are. His hair was white and close-cropped. His skin was a rich deep brown, with a scattering of darker freckles across the cheekbones. He wore a button-down shirt, faded blue, sleeves rolled to the elbows, and khaki pants, and brown sandals, and around his neck on a leather cord was a single small carved something, a fish maybe, Eli couldn't see it clearly yet.

He stepped down from the porch and he walked toward the car, and when he got to the car he did not rush. He put one hand on the door. He put the other hand on Eli's father's shoulder.

"Marcus," he said. "My brother."

His voice was low. It had an easy music in it that Eli did not recognize — a slight softening of the r's, a lilt on the vowels, a way of landing on the word *brother* as if the word were a small boat coming into harbor.

"Odell," Eli's father said, and Eli saw, with surprise, that his father's eyes had gone shiny.

The two men held each other's arms for a long moment. Then Odell stepped back.

"And this," Odell said, turning to Eli, "this must be the boy."

"Hi," Eli said. It came out very small.

"Hi yourself." Odell bent down a little. He was looking at Eli with a quiet careful attention that made Eli feel as though he were being read, not stared at. "You got your daddy's eyes, look at that. Straight from my mama, through your daddy, into you."

"Oh," Eli said.

"Come on out the car, now. Come up on the porch. You met Zhuri yet?"

"No, sir."

"Zhuri," Odell called, "this boy is gonna be here three weeks. You be nice."

"I'm always nice," Zhuri said, not looking up from her book.

"Uh-huh," Odell said.

He winked at Eli.

And somehow, just with that wink, something loosened in Eli's chest — not all the way, but a little. A small knot, slipped.

He got out of the car.

His father pulled the suitcase out of the trunk, and Odell took it, and for a second Eli was going to say *I can carry it*, but Odell already had it, and Odell was already walking up the porch steps, and so Eli followed.

On the porch, Zhuri finally lowered her book. She was Eli's age, maybe a little older. Twelve, he thought. She had her hair in two braids that hung to her shoulders, and she was wearing denim shorts and a bright orange T-shirt that said CHARLESTON YOUTH CHOIR in green letters. Her eyes were large and serious and very brown. She looked Eli up and down. She did not smile.

"Hi," she said.

"Hi," Eli said.

"I'm Zhuri."

"Eli."

"I know."

She went back to her book.

The screen door opened again, and a woman came out, and the woman was Aunt Ruth.

Aunt Ruth was small and round and had silver hair pinned up in a bun. She had glasses on a chain around her neck, and she had a garden apron on with dirt smudges on the front, and she had a smile that arrived at Eli before the rest of her did. She came straight across the porch and she took Eli's face in both her hands — her hands were warm and smelled of basil — and she looked into his eyes and she said, "Child, you made it."

"Yes, ma'am."

"You hungry?"

"A little."

"Course you are. Come inside. Come inside, set down. Zhuri, put that book away and come help me."

"I'm at a good part," Zhuri said.

"Every part is a good part in that book," Aunt Ruth said. "Come help me."

Zhuri sighed. She closed the book. She stood up.

The inside of the yellow house was cool and dim after the bright outside. It took Eli's eyes a moment to adjust. When they did, he saw a small living room with a worn green couch and two armchairs and a low table piled with magazines and a wooden bowl full of seashells. Beyond the living room was a kitchen, and beyond the kitchen, a back door standing open to a screened porch, and beyond that porch, a flash of green that was the start of the yard.

On the walls there were pictures.

There were framed black-and-white photographs. A wedding. A very young Uncle Odell in a Navy uniform. A gap-toothed boy who Eli suddenly realized was his own father at about eight years old, grinning and holding up a fish almost as long as his arm. There was a watercolor painting of a sweetgrass basket. There was a small wooden cross with palm fronds tucked behind it. There was a framed piece of embroidery that said BLESS THIS HOUSE AND ALL WHO ENTER.

There was, Eli noticed, not a single thing on the walls that was not loved.

"Set down," Aunt Ruth said, pointing to a chair at the kitchen table. "You had lunch?"

"Biscuits."

"Biscuits ain't lunch."

She began to move around the kitchen, and Eli watched her, because watching her was like watching a dance that had been rehearsed for fifty years. She opened the refrigerator without looking, took out three things without looking, set them on the counter, and only then did her eyes follow her hands. A plate appeared. A fork. A glass of sweet tea so cold that the glass began to bead immediately.

"You eat shrimp?" she asked.

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

"I've never had it."

"Never — " She stopped. She looked at Eli's father, who was leaning in the doorway with a small amused smile. "Marcus. You never fed this child shrimp?"

"Guess I never did."

"Well, Lord have mercy," Aunt Ruth said. "We got some catching up to do."

She set a plate in front of Eli. On the plate were shrimp and grits. The grits were white and buttery and smelled of corn, and the shrimp were plump and pink and nestled in a red-brown sauce with bits of sausage and green onion.

"Little bites," she said. "See what you think."

Eli took a little bite.

He chewed slowly.

The grits were soft and warm and had more flavor than any grits he had ever had — though, to be fair, he had mostly only had grits from packets. The shrimp was tender. The sauce was smoky and a little spicy and tasted of something he did not have a word for, something that came from the earth or from the sea or from both.

"Well?" Aunt Ruth said.

"It's really good."

"You tell the truth?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"He say yes ma'am," Aunt Ruth said, to no one in particular, pleased. "Sit up straight, baby, you gonna digest better."

Eli sat up straight.

He ate.

On the screened porch, out the back door, he could hear the creek that ran behind the house. It made a small continuous sound, not loud, a kind of pouring, a steady sweet word the water was saying to itself.

He ate and he listened.

After a while, Zhuri came over and sat down across from him. She did not say anything. She watched him eat, with her chin on her hand.

"What?" Eli said, finally.

"Nothing."

"You're staring."

"I'm not staring. I'm observing."

"That's the same thing."

"No it isn't."

"Yes it is."

"Observing," Zhuri said, "is scientific. Staring is rude. I'm observing."

"Okay."

"I'm observing that you're eating like somebody's gonna take it away from you."

"I'm hungry."

"Mm-hmm."

She reached over and picked up a piece of cornbread from a basket on the table and bit into it. Crumbs fell on her shirt. She didn't brush them off.

"My grandma make the best shrimp and grits in three counties," she said.

"Yeah."

"Fact."

"Yeah."

"You Marcus's boy."

"Yeah."

"My granddaddy been talking about you coming for two months."

Eli looked up. "He has?"

"Two whole months. Every day almost. Eli this, Eli that. He had all Uncle Marcus's old stuff out of the shed last Saturday, saying maybe you'd like to see. Granddaddy ain't never got anything out of the shed in my whole life."

Eli didn't know what to say to that.

"Why don't you visit?" Zhuri said.

"I — "

"Your daddy. Why don't he visit."

"I don't know."

"He scared?"

"I don't know."

"My mama says grown folks scared of all kinds of things they don't admit."

"Maybe."

Zhuri chewed her cornbread. "Well. You here now. That's something."

"Yeah."

"Eat your grits."

Eli ate his grits.

He ate them until they were gone.

And when they were gone, Aunt Ruth, who had been only pretending not to listen, pretending very obviously with her back turned and a little smile she couldn't hide, came over and refilled his plate without asking.

He ate that, too.

Outside, the creek went on talking to itself, and the Spanish moss swayed, and a hawk called once from somewhere high up, and Eli Adams — eleven years old, a boy who had lived eleven years in one small square bedroom in New Jersey — sat at a kitchen table in a yellow house in the South Carolina Low Country, and he was farther from home than he had ever been, and he was also, though he did not have the words for it yet, closer to something than he had ever been.

It took Eli a full day to understand that the language was a language.

At first, the morning after he arrived, it just sounded like a kind of music. Uncle Odell and Aunt Ruth would be in the kitchen, pouring coffee, and they would speak to each other, and Eli would hear the rise and fall of their sentences — the way the words pulled like a tide, forward and back — but he could not quite catch the meaning. It was not another language, not really. It was English, but English that had been on a long journey and had come back changed.

"Ya fa go de sto'?"

That was Aunt Ruth, over breakfast.

Eli looked up, confused.

"She askin your uncle if he goin to the store," Zhuri said, not looking up from her cereal.

"Oh."

"Y'all talk about him like he not right here," Uncle Odell said, buttering a biscuit.

"He not right here," Aunt Ruth said. "He halfway up the road already in his head."

"Mm. Well. I do need eggs."

"Figured."

Eli watched them, fascinated.

It wasn't that they talked fast. It wasn't that, exactly. It was that the words had a different shape in their mouths. The *th* in *the* sometimes softened to *d*. The word *you* sometimes came out *ya*. The word *for* sometimes sounded more like *fa*. Sentences folded up tidier, like a sheet being folded, corner to corner.

And in between their own sentences, when they spoke to Eli, their voices went slower, the words laid out more plainly, a little gift of clarity, without fuss.

"You want toast, baby?" Aunt Ruth said to him.

"Yes, please."

"Grape jelly or honey?"

"Honey."

"That's my boy."

Zhuri watched all of this from across the table, chewing slowly.

"You'll pick it up," she told him, after her grandparents had moved off to the porch. "Give it a few days."

"Will it just start making sense?"

"More or less. Sometimes I help translate if you look lost."

"Thanks."

"You're welcome." She tapped her spoon on the edge of her bowl. "It's called Gullah. The way they talk. Well — Gullah-Geechee. That's the whole name. My granddaddy speaks it with his friends when they get together. With us, and with your daddy, he kind of goes in and out. He's been talking more of it this summer than I usually hear."

"Why?"

Zhuri shrugged. "Maybe 'cause you're here. Family brings things out."

"Is it — is it like a dialect?"

"It's its own thing. It came from a lot of places. My granddaddy says it's got African in it, and English, and some other stuff too. From the people who were brought here a long time ago. They made something of their own."

"Oh."

"You didn't know?"

"No."

"Well, now you do."

Eli sat with that for a minute.

He thought of his forty-seven stones, each one labeled with a place and a time. He thought of how a stone, too, was made of many things. Bits of mineral, bits of older stone, ground down and pressed and lifted up and ground again. Something that had been on a long journey, and had come back changed, and had become its own thing.

"Huh," he said.

"Huh what?"

"Nothing. Just thinking."

"You think a lot."

"I guess."

"That's okay. I think a lot too."

She stood up and took her bowl to the sink, and she rinsed it, and she turned it upside down on the drying rack without rattling it once.

"Come on," she said. "Grandma's gonna put us to work. Weeding."

"Okay."

"Watch out for the fire ants."

"The what?"

"Don't put your hand down anywhere you didn't look first."

"Oh."

He followed her out into the yard, and the morning, which had been cool when he'd first come outside, was already starting to warm. The sun came down through the live oaks in slow gold patches, and the creek murmured behind the house, and somewhere a rooster was crowing, late, out of order, as though it had forgotten what time it was.

Aunt Ruth was already in the garden.

The garden was not like any garden Eli had ever seen. It was wide and a little wild. There were tomatoes in tall cages. There were greens — collard and mustard and something with red veins Eli didn't recognize. There were beans climbing up poles made of sticks. There were herbs in a corner plot, basil and mint and a tall feathery one that Zhuri said was dill. There were flowers tucked between the vegetables — marigolds, orange and yellow, and something blue Eli didn't know, and zinnias in every color he had ever heard of.

And along the back of the garden, Eli now noticed, there was a low stone wall.

It ran for maybe twenty feet. It was about knee-high. It was made of stones that did not match. Some were gray, some were white, some were a rusty red, some were nearly black. Some were the size of a fist. Some were the size of a grapefruit. Some were flat and some were round and some were cracked down the middle.

He stopped.

He looked at it.

"Grandma's wall," Zhuri said, noticing. "She's been building it forever. Like, my whole life. Before my whole life."

"Where did the stones come from?"

"Everywhere." Zhuri shrugged. "She's got a story for every one."

"Every one?"

"Every single one. Ask her sometime. But bring snacks. She'll talk for a while."

Aunt Ruth turned around just then.

"Y'all gonna stand there looking," she called, "or y'all gonna come pull some weeds?"

"Coming, Grandma."

"Bring that little basket there. Eli, baby, you ever weed a garden?"

"Not really."

"Come on. I'll show you."

She showed him.

She showed him how to tell a weed from a seedling. ("If it's growing where Grandma didn't plant it, that's a weed." Aunt Ruth said. "But look first. You don't pull up the good stuff by mistake.") She showed him how to grip the weed low, near the root. She showed him how to pull straight up, slow, so the whole root would come. She gave him an old pair of gardening gloves that had been Uncle Odell's — too big, but she rolled up the cuffs — and she set him down the first row and told him to start.

He started.

At first he was clumsy. He pulled up what he thought was a weed and Aunt Ruth called over, "That's my basil, honey, put him back." He put it back, pressing the soil down around the little root, and he whispered *sorry* to the plant, and he kept going.

After a while, he got the rhythm. Grip. Pull. Shake. Drop in the basket. Grip. Pull. Shake. Drop. It was slow work, but it was work that did not require him to think hard, and so, as he worked, he started to hear the things around him.

The creek.

Birds.

An airplane, far overhead.

Aunt Ruth humming to herself, low, a tune he didn't know but that seemed to have been going on for a long time before he noticed it and would probably go on for a long time after.

Zhuri, in the next row, muttering something to herself about a mosquito.

He did not, for once, have to be anything in particular. He did not have to be the new kid. He did not have to be the polite guest. He did not have to be the biracial son of a white mother and a Black father, a question people tried not to ask but sometimes did. He was just a boy kneeling in dirt that had loosened around his knees into two dark circles. He was just a pair of hands, pulling up what should not be there, leaving what should.

"Aunt Ruth?" he said, after a long while.

"Mm?"

"That wall."

"Mm-hmm."

"Zhuri said every stone has a story."

"She told you that, did she."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Well." Aunt Ruth sat back on her heels. She took off her gloves. She looked at the wall, and then she looked at Eli, and her eyes were small bright wells. "She's right about that."

"Can I — could I hear one?"

"Just one?"

"Or more. If — if that's okay."

"Baby," she said, "you can hear as many as you want. Only not right now, because right now we got two more rows to do before the sun get mean. But tonight. You come out here tonight after supper and I'll tell you about one. How about that?"

"Okay."

"One for now. One for later. One for later still. That's how a person builds a wall. One at a time."

She put her gloves back on.

She bent back down.

Eli bent back down too, and he pulled the next weed, and the next, and as he pulled he thought — without really meaning to think it — that maybe a life was a wall like that. Maybe a person was too. Maybe the shoebox under his bed, with all its bits of mica and basalt and quartz and granite, each on its small square of tissue paper, each with its date in careful pencil — maybe that shoebox was a wall he had been building all along, without knowing.

The thought made him feel, suddenly and for no reason he could name, like crying.

He did not cry. He kept pulling weeds.

But the thought settled in him, the way the small round weight of a river stone settles into a cupped palm.

On the third morning, Uncle Odell said, "Son, you fish?"

Eli looked up from his cereal.

"Um," he said.

"I'll take that as a no."

"I've been once. Kind of. With my friend Will's dad, at a lake. I didn't catch anything."

"You casted?"

"Some. Not very well."

"All right." Odell leaned back in his chair. He had a coffee cup in his hand. It was steaming. On the table beside him was a small transistor radio tuned low to a gospel station. "We'll fix that today."

"Okay."

"Get your shoes on. Closed-toe. Got mud."

"Okay."

Eli went and got his shoes on. They were his everyday sneakers, already a little scuffed from the dirt path around the house, and he tied them tight. He came back into the kitchen and Odell was standing by the back door with two fishing rods in one hand and a tackle box in the other.

"You gonna need this," Odell said, and handed Eli a wide-brimmed straw hat that had been hanging on a nail by the door. "Sun hotter than you know yet."

The hat was too big. It came down almost to his eyebrows. But Eli put it on, and Odell looked at him and gave a single satisfied nod, and then they went out.

They walked down a path behind the house that Eli had not walked yet. It was not one of the garden paths. It was a worn dirt trail through palmettos and scrubby oaks, and it curved down toward the sound of the creek, and then down further until the trees opened up and there was the water.

The creek was not a big creek. It was maybe ten feet across where they came out. But it ran clear and brown-gold, the color of strong tea, and on the far side were cypress trees standing in the shallows on their knobbled knees, and above the cypress trees was the sky, pale blue, and above the sky was nothing, just more sky.

"All right," Odell said. He set the tackle box down on a flat rock. He handed Eli a rod. "Lesson one."

"Yes, sir."

"You don't got to sir me. Uncle's fine."

"Okay, Uncle."

"There you go." Odell smiled. "Now. You hold the rod like this. Not squeezing. Soft. Firm but soft. Like you holding somebody's hand who you like but don't want to embarrass."

Eli tried it.

"Tighter," Odell said. "Not tight. Just — there. Yeah. Good."

"Okay."

"Now, your line is gonna want to fly off if you don't keep your finger on it. You feel this little button here — yeah, that's right. You press that. You hold it. You rear back. Over your shoulder. Not too high. And then you whip it forward and you let go of the button at the right second, and the line flies."

"What's the right second?"

"You'll know."

"But how will I know?"

"You won't know the first ten times. Then you'll know."

Eli rocked back, tried to whip forward, let go of the button.

The line flopped two feet in front of him into the dirt.

"Yep," Odell said. "Try again."

He tried again.

This time the line went up and behind him and caught on a palmetto leaf.

"Oh no."

"It's all right. Hold still." Odell walked calmly over. He unhooked the line. He walked back. "Let's talk about what your elbow's doing."

"It's doing something wrong."

"Your elbow's flying up too high. You're trying to *throw*. That ain't what we're doing. We're *casting*. Casting is like — you ever skip a stone?"

"Yes."

"It's like that. The motion of the wrist. The arm just follows."

Eli thought about skipping stones.

He had skipped stones before. He wasn't brilliant at it. But he had skipped stones.

He lowered his elbow. He brought his wrist back. He flicked it forward. He let go of the button.

The line shot out in an arc. It sailed. It hit the water with a small *plip* maybe fifteen feet out.

"There you go," Odell said quietly.

"I did it!"

"You did it."

"It wasn't very far."

"Far enough for today. Don't try for distance yet. Try for touch. Try to put it where you want it."

"Okay."

"Try again."

Eli reeled in. He cast again. The line went into the water, a little closer this time, in almost the same spot. He reeled in. He cast. It went farther. He cast again. A little crooked.

After about twenty minutes, Odell said, "All right. Enough dry-run. Time to put a worm on there."

He opened the tackle box. He showed Eli how to hook a worm. Eli hesitated.

"It's all right if you don't want to."

"No, I — I can."

"You sure?"

"I think so."

"Take your time. The worm ain't in a hurry."

Eli took his time. He hooked the worm. It wriggled. He winced a little. But he got it on. Odell nodded.

"First worm's the hardest," he said. "Get easier."

"Okay."

They fished.

They did not talk much for a long while. Eli cast. The worm hit the water. Nothing happened. Eli reeled in. He cast again. Nothing happened. Odell cast, and his line went out beautiful and easy, and Eli watched, and learned, and cast again.

A little breeze moved through the Spanish moss.

A turtle slid off a log on the far bank and disappeared into the creek with a quiet *ploop*.

Somewhere back toward the house, Aunt Ruth's voice called something to Zhuri, and Zhuri's voice called something back, too faint to make out.

"Uncle Odell," Eli said.

"Mm."

"Can I ask you something?"

"You can ask me anything."

"Was my dad — was he different? When he was a kid?"

Odell didn't answer right away. He reeled in slow. He cast again.

"Different from what?" he said.

"I don't know. From how he is now."

Odell nodded slowly.

"Your daddy was a serious little boy," he said. "Serious like — he took things in. He watched, the way you watch. Didn't rush to say nothin'. And when he did say something, it was usually worth listenin' to."

"He's pretty quiet now too."

"Mm-hmm."

"But like — different quiet, maybe."

"Different quiet, how?"

"I don't know. Like. Like there's a lot he's not saying."

Odell thought about that.

"That's a grown-up thing you noticing," he said, finally. "Yeah. Your daddy got a lot he ain't said. To you. To me. To himself, maybe."

"Why?"

"Well. That's his story to tell, Eli. Not mine."

"Okay."

"But I'll tell you this. He loves you. There ain't no doubt about that in his life. What's between you and him, that's for y'all to work out. But the love, that's already settled. You hear me?"

"Yes, sir."

Eli cast.

The worm hit the water.

"Uncle?"

"Mm."

"Thank you. For — having me here."

Odell looked over. His eyes were warm.

"Son," he said, "you don't got to thank me for family. That's a word that don't fit. You hear me?"

"Yes."

"Family is not a favor. Family is a — a condition. It's the water you swim in, whether you knew it was there or not. You understand?"

"I think so."

"You'll understand better as you get older."

"Okay."

They fished for another hour.

Eli did not catch anything. Neither did Odell, that day. But once, while they were standing there in the quiet, a great blue heron came walking along the far bank of the creek on its stilt legs, picking each foot up carefully and setting it down carefully, and it stopped exactly across from them, and it cocked its head, and it looked at Eli with one yellow eye, unhurried and unafraid, and then it lifted up on its great soft wings and flew upstream, and the sound of its wings was like a sheet being shaken out.

Eli held his breath the whole time.

When it was gone he looked at Odell.

"Yeah," Odell said, before Eli could ask. "That right there. That's a blessing."

"Okay."

"You remember that."

"I will."

Walking back up the path, Eli asked, "Did we catch anything even a little?"

"We caught a heron."

"We didn't catch a heron."

"We caught sight of a heron. Same difference. Better, maybe."

"Okay."

"Not every day got to end with a fish on the line, Eli."

"No?"

"No. Sometimes the day just wants you to be there."

Eli thought about that, too.

He tucked it away, next to *the sky's way of hiding in the dirt*, in the place behind his eyes where the good sentences lived.

The trouble with Zhuri, at first, was that Eli couldn't tell if she liked him.

She was around him all the time — there was nowhere else to be, really, in the yellow house and its yard — but she looked at him sideways, the way a cat looks at something new in the living room. She didn't invite him to do things. She didn't refuse, either, when he asked. She just was.

His father had been in fifth grade once.

His father had owned a copy of *The Secret Garden*.

His father had, presumably, read it. Had sat down somewhere, in Charleston, probably, in some house Eli had never seen, and had turned these pages.

It was strange. It wasn't a big thing. But it wasn't nothing, either.

Zhuri came out onto the porch in her sneakers. She had on a baseball cap — Atlanta Braves — and she was carrying a plastic bucket.

"You busy?" she asked.

"Reading. Kind of."

"Come help me."

"With what?"

"Cleaning out the shed."

Eli closed the book carefully. He put it on the little porch table.

"Okay," he said.

The shed was around the back, just past the edge of the garden. It was small and wooden and leaned slightly to the left. Its door was held shut by a length of twine looped over a nail. Zhuri untied the twine. The door creaked open.

Inside, it smelled of old wood and of dust and of something sweet and slightly chemical that Eli realized, after a second, was WD-40.

There were shelves. There were tools. There was a push mower from about a hundred years ago. There were coils of rope. There were paint cans. There were three fishing rods leaning in a corner. And there were boxes — cardboard boxes, stacked, some of them slumping a little with age, their tops flapped open, their labels in faded marker.

"Grandma told me I could clean up in here this summer," Zhuri said. "It was her idea. She said, 'Girl, you got to have a project or you'll drive me crazy.' So this is my project."

"Wow," Eli said. He looked around. "That's a lot."

"Right?" Zhuri set down her bucket. "I've been going through one shelf at a time. Sorting. Keep, toss, donate. Grandma has to okay the toss."

"What have you found?"

"A lot of nothing," Zhuri said. "A lot of rusty screws. A million nails. An old pair of hip waders. But also — " she turned, and her eyes got bright in a way Eli had not seen before, bright with a kind of secret — "come here."

She led him to a shelf in the back. On the shelf was a shoebox.

Not his shoebox.

"M and O?" Eli said.

"Marcus and Odell."

"Oh."

"I haven't opened it. I've been saving it." She looked at him. "I was gonna save it until the end of summer. But I think maybe it should be you and me, together. Now. Since you're here."

"Okay."

She lifted the shoebox down very carefully. She blew the dust off the top. She sneezed.

They sat down on the floor of the shed, cross-legged, the shoebox between them. A bar of afternoon light came in through the small window and made a golden strip across the floor.

Zhuri took the lid off.

Eli leaned forward.

Inside, there was a jumble of things. There was a rolled-up comic book, its corners curled. There was a wooden yo-yo, the string broken. There was a plastic army man, missing a rifle. There was a green ribbon. There were marbles — a dozen of them, in a little mesh bag. There was a tin whistle. There was a notebook with a blue cardboard cover.

And there were stones.

Eli's breath caught.

At the bottom of the shoebox, beneath everything else, lay maybe a dozen stones.

They were small and varied. A piece of mica, bigger than the one Eli had found at Mae's station. A chunk of white quartz with a vein of pink through it. A flat gray river stone, worn smooth. A fossil — Eli saw it right away, a small shell pressed into a piece of limestone, curled like a tiny sleeping thing. A piece of something red — jasper, maybe, though he wasn't sure.

They were not labeled.

But they had been kept.

Someone had kept them, for a long time, carefully, in this box.

"Oh," Eli said.

Zhuri looked at him.

"You okay?" she said.

"Yeah." He picked up the fossil. He held it. "My dad. My dad collected stones."

"Yeah?"

"I didn't know that."

"Hm."

"I do too."

"Yeah?"

"I have — I have a box. Under my bed. At home. Like this one. But with labels."

"Oh."

*MARCUS ADAMS. 9 YEARS OLD. NOTEBOOK.*

Zhuri turned the page. And then another. The pages were lists. Lists of fish Marcus had caught. Lists of birds Marcus had seen. Lists of rocks Marcus had found. Each list was dated.

Eli's eyes stung. He didn't know why, exactly.

No. He did know why.

He knew why.

"Hey," Zhuri said, watching him.

"Yeah."

"You all right?"

"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. It's just — "

"It's a lot."

"Yeah."

"Take your time."

He took his time.

She didn't rush him. She didn't look at him in the prickly sideways way she'd been looking at him since he arrived. She just sat there, with her hands on her knees, and waited.

"I didn't know he — " Eli said. "He never told me. That he. That he used to — "

"Yeah."

"He never said."

"Yeah."

"Why wouldn't he say?"

Zhuri considered.

"I don't know," she said, finally. "But maybe he didn't want to — I don't know. Like. Give you the weight of it."

"The weight?"

"Like. Here, take this, it was mine. Maybe he wanted you to find your own thing. On your own."

"I didn't find it on my own. I found it because of you."

"Yeah, well. I'm pretty great."

Eli almost laughed. It came out mostly as a breath.

"Thank you," he said.

"You're welcome."

"For showing me."

"I know."

They sat there for a while.

Zhuri held up the piece of mica. "You want this?"

"That's his."

"He's grown. He doesn't need it."

"Maybe."

"Take it. I bet he'd want you to."

Eli hesitated. Then he took the piece of mica. It was bigger than the one from Mae's station. It had layers — actual layers he could see with his naked eye, thin translucent sheets stacked like the pages of a book.

"We can put everything back," he said. "All the rest of this stuff. We should — Uncle Odell might want it. Someday."

"Okay."

"But maybe — the stones — "

"You take them."

"All of them?"

"You want them?"

"I — yes."

"Then yes. They belong with a stone gatherer. Obviously."

"Okay."

They packed the non-stone things back into the shoebox, one at a time. The yo-yo. The army man. The comic book. The tin whistle. The ribbon. Last, the notebook. Zhuri closed the notebook gently and laid it on top of the rest. Then she put the lid back on. She stood up.

"Thank you, Zhuri," Eli said again.

"Quit thanking me."

"Okay."

"It's just — it's yours. It was always gonna be yours, probably. I just got to hand it to you."

She looked at him.

"You're my cousin," she said. It was a statement. Calm. Final. She said it the way she might have said *it's Tuesday.* "I didn't know you before, and now I do, and that's that. Right?"

"Right," Eli said.

"Good," Zhuri said. "Now come on. Grandma made lemon bars."

He followed her out of the shed.

He carried the stones carefully in his cupped hands, all twelve of them, back to the yellow house, and up the stairs to the little guest bedroom, and he set them on the dresser, and he stood looking at them for a long time.

He had not yet unpacked his own shoebox from home, which had been in his suitcase since the day he'd left.

That night, before bed, he pulled it out. He set it on the dresser next to his father's stones. He opened it. He looked down at the forty-seven of his own, each on its tissue paper, each with its date. He looked at his father's twelve, dateless.

And then, slowly, and without yet knowing exactly why, he began to move his father's stones into his own shoebox, one by one. He tucked them in with his own. He wrote no labels. These would be the stones without labels. They did not need labels. They were the stones before he knew how to write.

When he had moved all twelve, he closed the shoebox.

He set it under the guest room bed.

He lay down.

He slept better that night than he had slept in a long time.

The next morning, early, Eli walked down the path to the creek alone.

He had not gone alone before. Uncle Odell had mentioned that the creek wasn't dangerous in the shallow parts, but that it got deep further around the bend, and that there were alligators now and then, small ones, and that Eli should stay close to the fishing spot they had used together. Eli had promised.

So he walked down, just as the light was starting to filter through the Spanish moss, and he stood on the bank where they had stood before, and he did not fish. He just stood, looking at the water.

The water talked to itself the same way it had before.

A little mist was coming off it.

He thought about everything. About his father being a boy. About Uncle Odell being a boy. About Aunt Ruth's garden wall. About Zhuri handing him the twelve stones like they were nothing and everything at once. About his mother, at home, probably sitting at the kitchen table right now with a coffee and a crossword.

He walked along the bank a little way. He looked down at his feet.

There, in the damp dirt at the water's edge, was a stone.

It was gray. It was almost perfectly round, as though someone had turned it on a lathe. It was a little flattened on two sides, like a biscuit. It was about the size of a walnut.

He bent down. He picked it up. It was cool in his palm. It was heavier than it looked.

He held it for a long time.

He turned it over. He turned it again. There was no sparkle in it. There was no fossil in it. There was no vein of color. It was just a gray river stone, the kind you could find in any creek in the country.

But it was a river stone from *this* creek.

And that made it different. That made it not just any stone.

He put it in his pocket.

He walked back up to the house.

Uncle Odell was on the porch drinking coffee.

"You up early," Odell said.

"I couldn't sleep anymore."

"Mm."

Eli sat down in the rocking chair next to his uncle's. The wood creaked under him.

"Uncle," he said.

"Mm."

"Can I show you something?"

"Sure."

Eli reached into his pocket. He pulled out the gray stone. He held it in his palm toward his uncle.

Odell looked. He did not pick it up. He just looked.

"From the creek," Eli said. "This morning."

"Mm-hmm."

"I collect them. Kind of. I have a — a box. At home. Under my bed. With labels on them. Where I got them."

"Yeah?"

"I've been doing it since I was seven."

Odell set his coffee cup down very slowly. He looked at Eli. Then he looked away, over the porch railing, out at the garden, where the morning was coming on slowly and the birds were now in full song.

"Your daddy," Odell said, after a little while, "used to gather stones."

"I know."

"Mm. Zhuri told you."

"And — we found his box."

"The old shoebox?"

"Yes, sir."

"I wondered if she'd come across that yet. She been in there all month."

"I'm sorry. Should we not have — "

"No, no. Lord, no. That box been sitting there fifty years. Forty-five, anyway. I knew it was there. I guess I never threw it out because I never could throw it out. Marcus used to be *real* particular about that shoebox."

"He let me — I mean. I took the stones. Out of it. Zhuri said I could. But if you — "

"Eli."

"Yes, sir."

"You go ahead and keep those stones. Those stones wanted to end up with you. That's why they been waiting."

"Okay."

They sat. Odell picked up his coffee again.

"He never told you," Odell said. It was not quite a question.

"No."

"Your daddy."

"No, sir."

"Hm."

Odell rubbed the back of his neck. The carved thing around his neck — the little wooden fish on the leather cord — caught the morning light.

"Your daddy has got a lot of quiet in him, Eli," he said. "You probably noticed."

"Yes, sir."

"It's partly he's just a quiet man. Takes after our father that way. But it's partly — well. It's partly he's been carrying some things. That maybe he don't know how to put down."

"Like what?"

Odell looked at Eli a long moment.

"That's for him to tell you," he said, finally. "If you ask him. And I think you should ask him. You old enough."

"Okay."

"But he loves you, boy. And he kept up with stones himself, long after he was grown. He has — " Odell paused. "He has got a bowl in his apartment in Atlanta. On a little table by the window. Full of stones. You seen it?"

"I've never been to his apartment."

Odell's jaw worked a little.

"All right," he said. "Well. When you go, look for the bowl. It's there."

"Okay."

"Ain't no coincidence, what you do. That's what I'm saying."

"Yeah."

They sat quietly for a while longer. A cardinal flew into the mimosa tree by the porch and bobbed on a branch and flew away again.

"That stone," Odell said. "From the creek. You gonna label it?"

"Yes, sir."

"What you gonna write?"

Eli thought.

"The creek behind Uncle Odell's house," he said. "June the — what's today?"

"Sixteenth."

"June 16th."

"Mm."

"And maybe — something else."

"Like what?"

Eli thought more.

"The stone my father would have found," he said, finally. "If he had been here."

Odell was quiet for a moment.

Then he nodded, once, slow.

"That's a good label," he said. "That's a real good label."

"Thank you, Uncle."

"You know what."

"What?"

"You gonna make your daddy cry, one day, when you show him that box."

"Is that okay?"

"It's better than okay. It's — it's the thing he needs, probably. He don't know it. But it is. You hear me?"

"Yes, sir."

Odell reached over. He put his big warm hand on the back of Eli's neck, gentle, the way a grandfather might. He held it there a moment.

Then he took it away, and he picked up his coffee cup, and he took a sip, and he looked out at the garden where the morning was now well on its way.

"Gonna be hot today," he said.

"Yeah."

"Good day for the creek. Later. With Zhuri. She's a better fisher than me, don't tell her I said."

"I won't."

"Good man."

Eli smiled.

He had just been called a good man. By his uncle. By his father's brother.

He slid the gray stone back into his pocket.

He went inside to find Aunt Ruth's breakfast.

Marcus stayed three more days at Uncle Odell's house, and then he was going to go back to Atlanta for a week of gigs, and then he was going to drive back down to pick Eli up at the end of the three weeks. That was the plan.

On the second-to-last evening of Marcus's stay, after supper, after Aunt Ruth had gone to bed and after Uncle Odell had gone out to sit on the porch with his little radio, Eli was sitting at the kitchen table picking at a piece of leftover cornbread when his father came in.

"Walk with me?" Marcus said.

"Where?"

"Just out around. I got something I want to say."

"Okay."

Eli got up.

They went out the back screen door. They walked through the yard, past the garden, past the stone wall (the low ghost of it in the dusk), and down the path toward the creek. The moon was coming up, nearly full, pale as a plate in the early-evening sky. The crickets had already started.

Marcus walked with his hands in his pockets. He did not talk at first. He just walked.

Eli's heart was beating a little fast. He didn't know why. He wasn't afraid of his father. But there was a tightness in his chest, because he had questions. He had had questions for most of his life. He had never had a good time to ask them.

And now — and he knew it even as it was happening — now was the time.

They stopped at the bend where the creek widened. There was a fallen log there, mossy and half-rotten. Marcus sat down on the log. He patted the space beside him. Eli sat down.

For a while they just listened.

Then Marcus said, "I owe you some things, Eli."

"Okay."

"I've been practicing this in my head for weeks. Actually, for years. I'm — I'm not gonna get it perfect. Let me just — let me just talk."

"Okay."

Marcus looked down at his hands. He was turning something over between his fingers. Eli squinted. It was a small stone. White. Quartz. Eli realized, with a small jolt, that it must have come from his father's pocket — from home, from his apartment in Atlanta — and not from here.

"I haven't been the father you deserve," Marcus said.

Eli swallowed.

"I haven't visited enough. I haven't called enough. When I have called, sometimes it's gone okay, and sometimes I've gotten off the phone feeling like I didn't — like I didn't know how to be your dad over the phone. So I'd put it off. And a week would become a month. And — "

"I know."

"I'm — let me just — "

"Okay."

"I want to tell you some of the why. Not as an excuse. As a — as a truth. Because I think you're old enough. And because I think if I don't tell you now, it'll just sit there longer, between us. And I'm tired of it sitting there."

"Okay, Dad."

Marcus was quiet a second. He kept turning the quartz.

"When your mom and I got divorced," he said, "you were three. You don't remember."

"A little."

"Do you?"

"Not really. I remember — I remember you sitting on the edge of the bathtub once. You were — you were really sad."

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Yeah," he said. "That happened."

"I don't know when."

"You were about three. We had just — we had just told you, that day."

"Oh."

"We told you together. We did that right, I think. I'm proud of that."

"Yeah."

"But after." Marcus swallowed. "After, I had to move out. And your mom is — your mom is a wonderful person. She is. She took good care of you. She did the heavy lifting. And I was — I was hurt. In a way that I didn't have the — the tools for. Have you ever had something hurt, and you don't know how to fix it, so you just kind of — you don't look at it?"

"Yeah."

"That was me. For years. I would call. I would visit. But I — I was scared. I was scared that I wasn't doing it right. I was scared that you didn't know me, and would never know me. I was scared that I'd show up and be a stranger. And because I was scared, I stayed away longer. Which made me more of a stranger. Which made me more scared."

Eli nodded.

"And there was — there was another thing."

"What?"

Marcus opened his eyes.

"I was ashamed," he said, "that I had not shared with you where I came from."

"Oh."

"I hadn't brought you down here. I hadn't introduced you to my brother. I hadn't told you about Charleston, or about your grandmother, or about — any of the people you come from on my side. I told myself it was because I didn't want to confuse you. You were being raised up there. By your mom. In her world. I didn't want to — "

He stopped.

"That's a lie," he said. "That wasn't the reason. Or it wasn't the whole reason. The whole reason is I didn't know how. I didn't know how to hand you this part of yourself when I didn't — when I felt like I'd half-lost it myself. I left home young. I went to school. I went further. I played in bands. I moved around. I married a white woman who I loved — I love your mother, I want you to know that — and we had you, and we were — we were trying. And when it fell apart, I felt like I had nothing to hand down to you except my own confusion."

"Dad — "

"So I stayed quiet. And the quiet got louder. And then — then Odell called me this spring. And he said, *Marcus, when is my nephew coming to see me?* And I didn't have an answer. I didn't have any answer. And I thought — I thought if I don't do this now, I'm never going to do it. And then I called your mom."

"Yeah."

"She said yes faster than I expected. I thought she'd be — I thought she'd need a lot of convincing. She didn't. She said, *Marcus, he should have met them years ago.* And she was right. And I was ashamed. And I'm still ashamed. I'm sorry, Eli."

Marcus's voice broke a little on the last part.

He kept going anyway.

"I am sorry I didn't visit more. I am sorry I didn't tell you about Odell. I am sorry I didn't tell you about the stones — I know you — I know about your shoebox. Your mom told me years ago. I should have said, *Eli, I did that too, when I was your age.* I should have said it the first time you told me. But I — I couldn't figure out how to say it without opening up — this. All of this. And I wasn't ready."

"Dad."

"I'm saying it now."

"Dad."

"Yeah?"

"It's okay."

"No, it's not."

"It is."

"Eli — "

"I know it's not all the way okay. I know that. But — but it's okay that you're saying it now."

Marcus looked at him. His eyes were shining in the moonlight.

"Is it?" he said.

"Yeah. Dad. Yeah."

Marcus made a sound that was half a laugh and half something else. He reached an arm out. He put it around Eli's shoulders. Eli leaned into him.

They sat like that for a long time.

"I'm not going to fix the last eight years," Marcus said, into Eli's hair. "I can't. But I can try to do the next eight different. If you'll let me."

"Okay."

"I'm going to call more. Weekly. On a Sunday, maybe. At a time you pick. And I'm going to visit. And I'd like — I'd like you to come to Atlanta. Spring break, maybe. See my place. See the city."

"Okay."

"And I'd like to come — I'd like to come here with you, again. Maybe every year. If your mom — if your mom thinks that's okay."

"She will."

"I don't want to — "

"She will, Dad. She said I should know this family. She told me in the car the day you came."

"She did?"

"Yeah. She said Uncle Odell had kind eyes."

Marcus laughed, wet. "Yeah. He does."

Eli reached in his pocket.

He pulled out the gray river stone.

"Dad," he said. "Look."

Marcus looked.

"I found it at the creek. Yesterday morning. Before breakfast."

"Yeah?"

Marcus stared at the stone in Eli's palm.

Then he started to cry.

Eli put the stone in his father's hand.

"It's yours, Dad."

"Eli — "

"I have lots."

"I can't — "

"Dad. I have lots. Keep it."

Marcus closed his hand around the stone.

He kept it.

They sat on the log for another long time, father and son, the creek talking to itself in the dark and the moon lifting higher and the crickets pouring their one huge song up into the Spanish moss.

When they finally walked back up to the house, neither of them said anything, but Marcus kept his arm around Eli's shoulders the whole way.

And that night, for the first time Eli could remember, his father tucked him in.

It was a small thing. Marcus pulled the light sheet up to Eli's chin. He sat on the edge of the bed. He put a hand on Eli's head. He said, "Goodnight, son. I love you."

"Goodnight, Dad."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

Marcus got up. He turned off the lamp. He stood for a moment in the doorway, a dark shape with light behind him, and then he closed the door, gently, and his footsteps went away down the hall.

Eli lay in the dark.

He did not sleep for a long time. But he was not sad. He was full. He was full of a quiet, bright thing that did not have a name yet, but that felt, in his chest, a little bit like a stone — smooth, and cool, and heavy, and his.

Marcus drove back to Atlanta the next morning, but before he left, he and Eli stood on the porch and hugged, and Marcus said, "Sunday. I'll call you Sunday. Four o'clock. You be near a phone."

"I will."

"Take care of yourself."

"I will."

"And take care of your uncle and aunt."

"I will."

Marcus got into the car. He backed out down the dirt road. He waved once through the open window. And then he was gone.

Eli stood on the porch for a while longer after the car was out of sight. He felt — not sad, not exactly — but emptied out in a clean way. The way a cup feels when it has been washed.

Aunt Ruth came out on the porch behind him.

"We got people coming Saturday, baby," she said, lightly.

"People?"

"Family. Lot of family. You best rest up."

Saturday turned out to be the fifth day of the second week. All week, the house filled with a kind of quiet busy. Aunt Ruth baked from early morning until late afternoon. She baked red velvet cake. She baked sweet potato pie. She baked a cornbread in a black iron skillet that was so big Eli could have bathed in it. She slow-cooked a pork shoulder overnight, the whole house filling with the sweet-smoky smell of it. She made a vat of collard greens that simmered on the back of the stove with a ham hock for hours, filling the air with a green-sweet smell that Eli came to love without quite being able to describe.

Uncle Odell set up folding tables in the yard. He strung paper lanterns between two trees. He dug a shallow pit for a fire, ringed it with bricks, and laid a grate across.

Zhuri and Eli, between assigned chores, ran after each other. They washed chairs. They swept the porch. They picked tomatoes for a huge bowl that Aunt Ruth sliced thick, with salt and pepper and torn basil from the garden. They weeded the front walk so that the guests, Aunt Ruth said, "would not see a weed at my doorway, not this year, not on my watch."

"How many people?" Eli asked, the Friday evening before.

"Mmm," Aunt Ruth said. "Could be thirty. Could be forty. Depending on who brings who."

"Forty?"

"Some of them coming all the way from Georgia. Some from just up the road. We do a big one every summer."

"I've never been to something that big."

Aunt Ruth put down the spoon she was stirring with. She turned to Eli and took his chin in her fingers, gently, to make him look up at her.

"Baby," she said, "listen to Grandma Ruth now."

"Yes, ma'am."

"These are your people."

"I know."

"Say it back to me."

"These are my people."

"Mm-hmm. And you ain't got to be nothing but yourself tomorrow. You ain't got to remember everybody's name. You ain't got to sing. You ain't got to dance. You ain't got to make speeches. You just got to be here. You got to let yourself be seen. Can you do that?"

"I think so."

"You can. I know you can. I seen you weed a garden, and I seen you pull up a piece of yourself you didn't know was in you. You brave, Eli Adams. Even if you don't know it yet."

"Thank you, Aunt Ruth."

She went back to stirring.

Saturday morning came bright and warm. Cars began pulling up the dirt road at about ten, and they kept coming, one after another, until the yard looked like a used-car lot. People poured out of the cars carrying dishes — pans of macaroni and cheese still hot under foil, tubs of potato salad sweating beads of cold, stacks of dinner rolls wrapped in tea towels, jugs of sweet tea and Mason jars of lemonade, a whole tray of devil's food cupcakes with pink frosting — and they came up onto the porch and hugged Odell and kissed Aunt Ruth's cheeks and exclaimed over Zhuri and stopped, every one of them, when they saw Eli.

"Oh my Lord," said a woman in a yellow sun hat. "Is this Marcus's boy? Ruth, is this Marcus's boy?"

"This is Marcus's boy."

"Come here, baby. Come give Cousin Dee a hug. I knew your daddy when he was knee-high. Lord. Lord, you got his eyes. You got his eyes."

She hugged him. She smelled of rose perfume and baby powder.

Then there was Cousin Benny, a man in his fifties with a gray goatee, who shook Eli's hand like Eli was a grown man. Then there was Uncle Ray, who wasn't technically an uncle but was a cousin of some degree, who had come with his wife Loretta, who pressed a homemade pecan praline into Eli's palm before even saying hello. Then there was a whole family of people from a church up in Beaufort, five of them, all dressed brightly, all talking at once, their laughter rolling across the yard. Then there were teenagers, three of them, who looked Eli over with the sharp polite disinterest teenagers specialize in and then, after a second, warmed enough to say hey. One of them, a tall girl with long locs, was named Tanika. She had a basketball under her arm. She said, "You play?"

"Kind of."

"Later, then."

"Okay."

Eli's head swam. He kept looking for Zhuri. Zhuri, thank goodness, kept appearing at his elbow, and she would murmur names to him under her breath — "That's Cousin Benny, he's Granddaddy's cousin, don't ask him about his truck" — and Eli would nod and try to hold the name in his head.

By noon, the yard was full. Children ran between the legs of grown-ups. Somebody had brought a portable speaker, and the music played through it and drifted through the trees — a little Motown, a little gospel, a little newer beat Eli almost recognized from the radio at home — and the grown-ups laughed in the way grown-ups laugh when they have known each other since childhood and can make each other laugh with a single look.

The food came out.

Aunt Ruth did not eat until everyone else had a plate. She went around refilling people's cups. She slapped Cousin Benny's hand when he reached for a second piece of pie too soon, and he laughed and pretended to be sorry. She made sure all the children had forks.

Eli sat at a folding table with Zhuri and the teenagers and a boy his own age named Jamal, who was wearing a Spider-Man T-shirt and who, it turned out, loved Lego as much as Eli did. Within five minutes they were deep in conversation about which Lego sets were the best and which were overrated, and Eli realized, laughing, that he had not thought once about being a stranger in about fifteen minutes.

About halfway through the meal, an old woman came walking over to the table.

She was small. She used a cane, but walked strongly. She had silver hair pulled back in a low knot. She wore a purple dress and a gold cross on a chain, and she had, Eli noticed, very clear and alive eyes — the kind of eyes that made you sit up a little straighter.

"Which one is Marcus's?" she asked.

Zhuri, without a word, pointed at Eli.

"Come here, son," the old woman said.

Eli got up. He went to her.

"Miss Lila," Zhuri whispered, to Eli, as he passed. "She was Granddaddy's schoolteacher. She knew your great-grandmother."

Eli stared.

Miss Lila looked down at him. She was only a little taller than he was.

"You look like your grandfather," she said.

"My — "

"Your daddy's daddy. That was Ephraim Adams. Came to our school late in life, just to learn some reading he missed when he was young. I was his teacher, though I was twenty years younger than him. He was a good man. He stood straight. He listened close. You listen close, don't you?"

"I — I try to."

"Mm. That's what a man does. Listens close."

"Yes, ma'am."

"You know who my mother was?"

"No, ma'am."

"My mother was Della Green. She was born in 1905. She died in 1991. She lived to be eighty-six. And she knew your great-grandmother, Minnie Adams. They grew up together, on Sapelo Island, before Della's family moved over to the mainland. Minnie was older by four years. Della always said Minnie was the one who taught her to make sweetgrass baskets, behind their grandmother's kitchen, when they were little girls."

Eli held still.

He felt as though Miss Lila, by speaking, were unfolding a very old map in the air in front of him. A map with roads he had never known existed.

"I just want you to know this," Miss Lila said. "Our families been knowing each other for a hundred years. More. Our mothers knew each other. Our grandmothers knew each other. Probably our great-grandmothers knew each other. That's who you are. That's who walks behind you. Whenever you walking."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Don't ever forget that."

"I won't."

She reached out. She put her hand on Eli's cheek. Her hand was papery and warm.

"Bless you, child," she said.

"Thank you, Miss Lila."

"You come find me later. I got a photograph I want to show you. I brought one I think you should see."

"Yes, ma'am."

She turned. She walked away with her cane, her purple dress swaying. She stopped a few feet off to laugh at something Uncle Ray had just said. Her laugh was surprisingly big.

Eli sat back down at the table.

Zhuri was watching him.

"You okay?"

"Yeah."

"That was a big one, what she just did."

"I know."

"She doesn't do that with everybody. She's kind of — serious."

"She — she knew our — "

"Yeah."

"I didn't know any of that."

"Yeah, well. Now you do."

Eli ate a bite of potato salad. He did not actually taste it.

Later, Miss Lila found him again. She was sitting in a chair on the porch. She waved him over.

"Come here, come here." She patted the chair next to her. He sat. She opened a small purse in her lap. She drew out a faded photograph.

It was small. It was black-and-white. Three young women in long dresses, standing in front of a small wooden church, squinting into the sun. One of the women was holding a baby on her hip. Their hair was braided and covered with scarves.

“In like manner all the members of the human family, whether peoples or governments, cities or villages, have become increasingly interdependent.” Miss Lila said, tapping with her finger, "that's my mother, Della. The one in the middle, with the baby — that's Minnie. Your great-grandmother."

Eli looked.

Minnie Adams was maybe twenty-five in the photograph. She had a full, serious face. Her mouth was set. Her eyes, even in the faded photograph, were clear and direct. They were — he could see it even across all those years — his father's eyes. His own eyes.

"The baby," Miss Lila said, “This gift giveth man the power to discern the truth in all things, leadeth him to that which is right, and helpeth him to discover the secrets of creation.”

"Oh."

"You keep it."

"What?"

"I got others. I want you to have this. You take it home with you."

"I — but — "

"Take it, honey. What am I gonna do with it? I'm eighty-eight years old. Things want to find their homes before I go. Take it."

Eli's hands trembled as he took the photograph. He held it carefully by the edges.

"Thank you, Miss Lila."

"Mm-hmm. Now go enjoy yourself. Go find some children to run with. That's the work of a child. You go do your work."

He stood.

He walked out into the yard, carrying the photograph as carefully as if it were made of butterfly wings. He found Zhuri. He showed her. She looked at it a long time.

"Oh my gosh," Zhuri whispered. "*Oh my gosh.*"

"I know."

"Eli. Look at her face. Look at her face."

"I know."

"That's — that's — "

"I know."

They stood together, bent over the little photograph, not speaking.

*Great-grandmother Minnie Adams. Born on Sapelo Island. Held my grandfather Ephraim on her hip. Taught Della Green to make baskets. From Miss Lila, the day of the gathering. June 24.*

He closed the notebook.

He lay down.

He was so tired he could barely keep his eyes open. But he felt, again, that full, bright, quiet thing, pressing up against the inside of his chest.

*These are your people,* Aunt Ruth had said.

Yes. Yes, they were. They had always been his people. He just had not been introduced yet.

The next morning was Sunday.

Aunt Ruth was up before Eli came downstairs. She was at the kitchen table with her Bible and a cup of coffee, and she was reading, slowly, her glasses low on her nose. She looked up when Eli came in.

"Morning, baby."

"Morning."

"Sleep good?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Eat something. Biscuits in the warmer. Gravy on the stove. Take your time."

He fixed himself a plate. He sat down across from her. She went back to her Bible. He ate quietly.

After a while, she closed the Bible. She took off her glasses. She folded them on top of the cover.

"Eli," she said.

"Yes, ma'am."

"Would you like to come somewhere with me this morning?"

"Where?"

"Little place up the road. It's called a Praise House. Do you know what that is?"

"No, ma'am."

"It's an old kind of church. A little one. Very small. Just a wood building. Around here we've had them for a long, long time. They go back to the time of our enslaved ancestors, when they weren't allowed in big churches, or couldn't get to them, or just wanted their own place. So they built small ones. And in those small ones they prayed, and they sang, and they — they talked about things. Talked about freedom. Talked about heaven. Talked about each other. Took care of each other."

"Oh."

"The one up the road has been there since about 1880. The wood is old. Every few years somebody patches it up. My grandmother cleaned there on Saturdays for thirty years. I used to go with her as a little girl. It was my first holy place."

"Oh."

"They have a service every Sunday morning. A very small one. Ten, fifteen people usually. I don't always go — most Sundays we go down to the Baptist church in town — but this Sunday I feel like going. Would you come with me?"

Eli looked at her. She was watching him kindly. She was not pressing. She was not performing. She was just — asking.

"Yes, ma'am," he said. "I'd like to go."

"All right. Put on something a little nicer. Your clean khakis and a button-down. Uncle Odell's staying here with Zhuri, she's not feeling great this morning. Might be something she ate. So it'll be just you and me."

"Okay."

Aunt Ruth wore a navy dress and a string of white pearls and a round hat. She looked, to Eli, about fifty years younger than she was.

They drove up the dirt road in her old green Buick. The Buick smelled of leather and of the peppermints in the little dish on the dashboard. Eli looked out the window. The Spanish moss hung in low curtains. A few egrets were standing in a pond. The morning was warming fast.

The Praise House was up a side lane. It was a small wooden building with a tin roof, painted white, weathered down almost to gray. It had one door and four windows. It had a wooden bench beside the door. There was no steeple. There was no cross on top. There was just a little white wooden building in a clearing.

About a dozen cars were parked in the grass nearby.

Aunt Ruth parked. She turned off the engine. She sat still for a moment.

"You ready?"

"Yes, ma'am."

A man in a brown suit was standing behind the pulpit. He was small and wiry, in his seventies maybe, and his eyes lit up when he saw Aunt Ruth.

"Sister Ruth!"

"Brother James."

"You bring a young man with you?"

"I did. This is my nephew Eli. Marcus's boy."

"Oh my." Brother James stepped down from the pulpit. He crossed to Eli. He did not shake his hand. He put both hands on Eli's shoulders. He looked into his face. "You're welcome here, son. You're welcome here."

"Thank you, sir."

"You just sit with your aunt. Join in what you want to join in. Be still when you want to be still. Ain't no wrong way to be in this house."

"Yes, sir."

He and Aunt Ruth sat in the second pew from the front. Aunt Ruth took a small fan from her purse — a folded paper one, with a printed scene of the Jordan River — and she began to fan herself slowly. The ceiling fans above turned. People came in. There were maybe fifteen in all. Most were older. Most nodded to Aunt Ruth. A few nodded to Eli. An older woman with a very bright pink hat came over and said, "Sister Ruth, this must be Marcus's. Hello, baby." Eli said hello.

The service began.

Brother James stood up. He did not have any notes. He spoke from memory, from the heart. He said a prayer that was very long and very soft, a prayer that thanked God for the morning, and for the people who had come, and for the people who could not come, and for the people who had once come and who had now gone on to be with God, and for the ancestors before them, and the ancestors before them, and the ancestors before them, going on back and back. His voice rose and fell. He did not shout. He spoke the way a person speaks to someone they have known all their life.

Then they sang.

There was no piano. There was no choir. There was just — the people. A woman in the back pew began the song with her voice, and her voice was low and strong, and she sang one line alone, and then the rest of them came in, and they sang together. The song was an old song. Eli had heard parts of it before somewhere. It was about a river, and about crossing over, and about the other side. It was not loud, but it filled the small building easily. The voices knotted together. Nobody was showing off. Nobody was performing. They were all just — singing. The way a family around a table says grace.

Eli did not know the words. But Aunt Ruth's hand found his, and she squeezed it once, and she smiled at him without looking at him, and he did not feel left out. He felt — held. Held by the song. Held by the voices. Held by the small white room with its single plaque.

*ONE GOD. ONE FAMILY.*

His mother had nodded at that, slowly, the way she nodded when she agreed with something deeply.

Eli had not thought of that night for three years.

Now, sitting in the Praise House, with the song rising, and the plaque on the wall saying *ONE GOD. ONE FAMILY.*, and Aunt Ruth's hand warm in his, he thought of it again.

After the song, there was another prayer. After the prayer, there was a small sermon — Brother James, talking gently about the importance of welcoming strangers, because you never know, he said, whether the stranger in front of you is a brother or sister you just have not met yet.

Eli listened hard.

He had been a stranger thirteen days ago. Now he was not a stranger.

He was Marcus's boy.

He was Minnie Adams's great-grandson.

He was Miss Lila's gift.

He was Zhuri's cousin.

He was somebody.

And he had always been this somebody. He had always been this somebody. He just had not been given the map.

After the service, people milled outside. Eli shook more hands. He was hugged by an old woman whose arms trembled. He was kissed on the top of his head by another whose lipstick left a faint pink mark he felt but did not wipe off for some time.

In the car on the way home, Aunt Ruth did not speak for a long while. Then she said, softly, "Did you feel it, baby?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"I thought you might."

"Aunt Ruth?"

"Mm."

"Did — did your ancestors worship in that building?"

"Some of them, yes. Not all. Some of them worshipped in houses before that building even existed. Some of them worshipped in fields. Some of them worshipped when they were not allowed to worship. The people in that building, Eli — we don't worship *to* those ancestors. We ain't doing that. But we worship *with* them. You understand me? They're in the room. That's what the Praise House teaches."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Everywhere you go, baby. They're with you. Don't you forget."

"I won't."

"You promise Grandma Ruth?"

"I promise."

She reached over. She squeezed his knee once. She drove the rest of the way home with both hands on the wheel and the sun coming through the windshield and the moss hanging along the road like long green prayers.

That afternoon, Aunt Ruth came up to the guest room door and knocked.

Eli was sitting on the bed, looking through the notebook with the photograph tucked in it.

"Come in."

She opened the door.

"Baby," she said, "I'm gonna work on the wall a little. You want to come?"

"Yes, ma'am."

He put on his garden shoes. He followed her down through the back door, across the yard, past the tomatoes and the beans, to where the low stone wall ran along the back edge of the garden. A small wheelbarrow sat at the far end, half full of stones.

"I been collecting," Aunt Ruth said. "You know, just — here and there. Whenever I find one that calls to me. That wheelbarrow been filling up all spring."

"Can I see?"

"'Course."

He went over to the wheelbarrow. He looked in.

The stones were a jumble. A piece of gray granite. A flat red stone. A dense black stone with a white stripe running through it. A small chunk of something greenish. A few rounded beach stones. A piece of limestone with a fossil imprint — it looked like a little curled leaf.

"Where'd you get them?"

"All over. That big gray one — that's from Cousin Benny's place up in Walterboro, I was there in April. The red one, I got when we drove up to see Zhuri's mama in Charleston. The black one with the white stripe, that's from the marsh down by Coffin Point. The fossil, my sister sent me that from Alabama, she knows I love the fossil ones."

"They're beautiful."

"Mm. Ain't they."

She picked up the fossil piece. She turned it in her hand.

"Come here a minute," she said. "I want to show you something."

She walked over to the wall.

"Every stone here," she said, "has a story. I put a little note, sometimes, under the stone when I set it. A slip of paper with the name of where it came from. Sometimes I don't even do that. I just remember. I've been building this wall since the year I married Odell."

"When was that?"

"Nineteen seventy-eight."

"Oh my gosh."

"Mm-hmm. That's a long time to build a wall. That's a long time to collect stones. We moved into this house the year after we married. We were young. Odell was fishing then. I was teaching second grade. We thought — we thought we'd have kids right away. But we didn't. We had a couple of losses. Then we had Odell Junior, and Odell Junior had Zhuri's mama, and Zhuri's mama had Zhuri. So we got there. It just took a long way to get there."

She ran her fingers along the top of the wall.

"I started putting stones along the back edge of the garden," she said, "after the first one we lost. I didn't know what to do with myself. I needed something to do with my hands. So I went walking. I found a stone. I put it here. That was 1981."

She pointed to a small white stone at the very bottom of the wall, near one corner.

"That one," she said. "That's the first."

"Oh."

"I put another one there when we lost the second. Three years later. I didn't think of it as a wall yet, then. It was just — marks."

"Yeah."

"Yeah."

"And I've kept building. Every time something important happened. Or sometimes when nothing happened at all, and I just wanted to mark — *I'm still here. This day. I'm still here.* That's allowed too."

"Yeah."

"You understand me?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"I thought you might."

She handed him the fossil piece.

"You put the next one on," she said.

"Me?"

"Mm-hmm."

"But — that's — that should be yours. It's your wall."

"A wall this long ain't one person's, honey. Can't be."

"I — "

"Here. Come on. This end of it, right here. See how the top is a little crooked? We need a flat one there to even it out. That fossil one, turn it over — yeah, see the flat side? Perfect. You set that right there."

He held the stone. He held it carefully.

"Aunt Ruth — "

"Just set it, baby."

He set it.

It fit. Of course it fit. The fossil side was up. The little leaf imprint faced the sky.

"Beautiful," Aunt Ruth said. "Now one of your stones."

"What?"

"You brought stones. I know you brought stones. A gatherer don't travel light."

"I — I did bring some."

"Go get one."

"Now?"

"Mm-hmm."

"Which one?"

"You know which one."

He stood very still.

He thought.

Then he ran.

He ran up to the guest room. He pulled the shoebox out from under the bed. He opened it. He did not, this time, look at the stones he had brought from home. He reached instead into the back of the box, where he had carefully placed the twelve stones from the shed — his father's stones, from when his father had been a boy.

He picked up one of them. A small, plain gray one. Smaller than the one from the creek. One of his father's.

He put the shoebox back under the bed.

He ran back down.

Aunt Ruth was still at the wall. She looked up as he came back.

"Got one?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Which one?"

He told her.

She went very still.

"Oh," she said, softly.

"Is that — is that okay?"

"Baby. Baby." She reached out. She took his free hand. "Yes. Yes, that's okay. That's more than okay. That's the rightest thing."

She pointed.

"Put it right next to the one you just put. Right there."

He put it.

He stepped back.

The two stones sat next to each other on top of the wall. The fossil one, and the small gray one. They belonged. You would not have guessed, looking at them, that one had traveled through forty-five years in a shoebox in a shed. You would not have guessed that one had crossed state lines in a boy's suitcase. They both just sat there. As if they had always been planning to meet.

Aunt Ruth reached into her apron pocket. She pulled out a little folded piece of paper, and a pencil. She wrote something on the paper. She handed it to Eli to read. Her handwriting was round and slow.

*Marcus's, through Eli, back home at last. June, 2026.*

"Fold it up," she said. "Tuck it under the stone."

He folded it.

He tucked it under the gray stone, where it wouldn't blow away.

He looked at her.

She was crying, quietly, with a little smile on her face. She did not wipe the tears. She let them sit there, on her cheeks, and the afternoon sun caught them.

"I'm gonna tell you something, Eli."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Grandma Ruth is not a young woman anymore."

"Yes, ma'am."

"This wall — I've been thinking, this last year or so — I ain't always gonna be able to build it."

"Don't say that."

"Hush. Listen. I'm being practical. Old people are practical. We have to be."

"Okay."

"Yeah."

"And then you showed up."

"Yeah."

"And you showed up with a shoebox under your bed, boy. Forty-seven stones, Zhuri tells me. I ain't even looked at it yet. Forty-seven stones all labeled. From a boy of eleven."

"Yeah."

"Eli Adams. I want you to keep the wall."

"What?"

"After me. When you grown. You going to keep adding to the wall. Anytime you come here. Anytime you send Zhuri a rock and say *put this one on there.* I want this wall to keep going. I want it to still be growing when your children are grown. You understand?"

"Aunt Ruth — "

"I ain't asking you to promise anything heavy. I'm asking if the idea fits you."

Eli looked at the wall. He looked at the fossil he had just set. He looked at his father's small gray stone beside it. He thought about all the stones he had not yet found — all the stones, at all the places he had not yet been, that were waiting for him to walk past them and pick them up.

"Yes," he said. "Yes, it fits me."

"Good."

"I will."

"I know you will. You got your daddy's seriousness about these things. And that means you got my mother-in-law's seriousness, and my mother-in-law's mother's seriousness, and on back and back. So. Good. That's settled."

She turned. She began to walk back toward the house. She paused at the garden's edge. She looked back.

"Come on, then," she said. "We'll set a couple more before supper. I got a good flat one from Cousin Dee's that's been waiting."

He followed.

They worked until the sun started to go low and the light turned amber, and the stones they set looked, in that light, like small warm hearts pressed into the earth, one next to the other, going on.

On the fifteenth day, Uncle Odell said, "Y'all ever been in a salt marsh?"

Zhuri said, "I've been, Granddaddy. A hundred times."

"Mm. Eli?"

"No, sir. I mean — I don't know what one is, exactly."

"Well," Odell said. "Then we best go."

They drove in his old pickup truck. Zhuri sat in the middle. Eli sat by the window. Odell was humming. The truck rattled over the dirt road and out onto the paved road and then, after a few miles, off onto a little gravel track that Eli had not known was there. They parked in a small sandy lot. There was one other car there, empty. There was a wooden boardwalk that led into the trees.

"Walk slow," Odell said, as they set out. "Walk slow, look everywhere, and don't talk too much."

"Yes, sir."

The boardwalk went through a few yards of oak scrub, and then it came out, all at once, into a wide, low-lying field of tall grass and gleaming water.

Eli stopped.

"Oh," he said.

The marsh was enormous.

It stretched out in front of him in every direction — a vast flat plain of bright green grass, laced through with thin silver channels of water, and beyond the grass, farther out, a brighter green that was deeper water, and beyond that, far off, a line of dark trees that was the other side, which seemed impossibly far away. The sky above was hazy blue. A few big white clouds stood still. Two herons stood in one of the water channels. A sea bird — Eli didn't know what kind — wheeled overhead.

The air smelled of salt and of sulfur and of something old and rich and mineral.

"That's marsh mud," Odell said, sniffing. "People call it pluff mud around here. You get used to it. You even come to love it."

"It's amazing."

"It is."

"How far does it go?"

"Miles. Miles and miles. All down this coast. It's the nursery. Shrimp grow up in here. Crabs. Little fish. All the big fish we catch in the deep water, they started in the marsh, when they were tiny. It's a cradle, I guess you could say."

"A cradle."

"Mm."

They walked out onto the boardwalk. It went on, raised above the grass, for what must have been half a mile. They walked slowly, the way Odell had said. Zhuri pointed things out.

"That's a fiddler crab," she said. She pointed to a small dark shape scurrying sideways on a little mud bar. "He waves his big claw at you. Look."

Eli looked. The crab waved.

"Wow."

"That over there — that's an oyster bed. See the clusters? That's living. You can harvest them, if you know when. You gotta be careful about red tide and stuff."

"Okay."

"And those tall grassy tufts, those are called spartina. That's the main grass. It's what holds the mud in place. It's salt-tolerant. Not a lot of plants can handle salt like that."

"You know a lot."

"My granddaddy taught me."

Odell said, "She was four years old the first time I brought her out here. Held my hand the whole way. Now she teaching you."

"It's the way," Zhuri said.

They walked on. A crane took off from the far side. Its flight was a slow, stately gesture, like a sentence being underlined in the air.

After a while, they came to a small wooden platform that jutted off the boardwalk. A single bench. Odell sat down. Zhuri sat beside him. Eli sat on the other side.

For a while none of them said anything.

Then Odell said, in his low easy voice, "Your great-granddaddy worked waters like this."

Eli turned.

"Ephraim Adams?"

"Mm-hmm."

"Miss Lila told me — she told me she taught him to read. When he was grown."

"That's right. She did. He was a late reader. It wasn't his fault. He was the oldest of eight kids, and his daddy died when he was twelve, and he had to go to work to help feed his brothers and sisters. School got pushed to the side. But he got back to it, later, after his own children were grown."

"Where'd he work?"

"Out here. Just like this. Further down the coast, mostly, but these waters — he knew them. He was a shrimper. Small boat. Went out with his brother and one other man. He fed this family, Eli. He fed his brothers and sisters through the Depression. He fed his kids through war. He fed his kids through hard, hard years. He kept a family together out of salt water and his own two hands."

"Wow."

"I never knew him, either. He died the year before I was born. But my daddy told me stories. My daddy told me — he told me, one time, that his daddy had hands like bricks. Couldn't even hold a cup right, his hands were so rough and calloused. But those hands, my daddy said, those hands never once hit him or his brothers. Not one time. He said his daddy would squeeze their shoulders to talk to them, and you could feel the bricks through the shirt, but the bricks were for the sea, not for them."

Eli was quiet.

"My daddy also told me," Odell went on, "that Ephraim used to gather things. From these waters."

"What kind of things?"

"Little things. Shells. A piece of coral, maybe. A dried-up sea horse, once. A pretty rock. He'd come back from a day shrimping with his pockets heavy, my daddy said, and he'd lay these things out on the windowsill above the kitchen sink. And the kids would come and look. It was the only decoration in the house, sometimes. Grandma didn't have money for fancy things."

"Stones."

"Mm?"

"He gathered stones too?"

"Yeah. I reckon. Rocks, shells, whatever the water gave him."

Eli looked out at the marsh. He watched the crane come back in to land. He thought about a man — a man he had never met, a man who had died before his own grandfather had died, a man who had never met him and never would — standing on a small shrimp boat somewhere out in the green channels, bending to pick up a bit of broken shell or a sea-smoothed stone, dropping it in his pocket, going home, laying it on a windowsill above a kitchen sink in a house Eli had never seen, for children to look at in the evening light. A man with brick hands and a gentle heart.

"He did it too," Eli said, softly.

"Yeah, son."

"Dad, and me, and — and him."

"Yeah."

"It's — it's a thing in us."

"Mm."

Eli thought some more.

"I'd like to — " he said. "I'd like to come back out here. Someday. And collect. From the marsh."

"You do that."

"I'd like to bring my dad."

"You bring your dad."

"I'd like to put something on Aunt Ruth's wall from here."

Odell smiled. He reached down. He picked up, from the edge of the platform, a small piece of broken oyster shell that had somehow ended up there. It was hand-shaped. It was a rough pale curve. He held it out.

"That'll do for today," he said.

"Thank you, Uncle."

"Put it in your pocket."

Eli put it in his pocket.

The shell was rough against his fingers. It was salt-smelling. It was a piece of this place.

They sat on the platform a while longer. Zhuri hummed a song Eli didn't know. Odell hummed along under his breath. The sun moved. A breeze came up across the marsh grass, and the whole expanse of green went soft and rippling, as if a great hand were stroking it, and Eli watched, and breathed, and said nothing.

He did not need to say anything.

On the drive back, Zhuri fell asleep against his shoulder. He did not move. He did not want to wake her. Her head was warm. Her braids tickled his cheek. The truck rattled on. Odell, driving, looked over once and caught Eli's eye and smiled a little, and did not say anything about it, because sometimes not saying something is the best way to say it.

Eli smiled back.

Outside, the Low Country went by, oak and palmetto and marsh and pine, one long green blur through the window.

On the eighteenth day, after supper, Eli asked if he could call his mother.

"Course you can," Uncle Odell said. "Use the kitchen phone. Long cord. Take it out on the porch if you want some privacy."

"Thank you, Uncle."

He had called her a few times already during the trip — short, quick calls, *yes I'm fine, yes I'm eating, yes I'm having a good time* — but he had not, yet, called her to actually *talk*. He had not known what to say. He had had too much to say, and all of it tangled up, like fishing line, and he had not known where to find the end of the thread.

He had found the end of the thread this afternoon.

It had come during the marsh walk. It had come when he thought of his great-grandfather's hands — brick hands, gentle hands — and it had kept coming, all evening, through supper, and he had eaten quietly, listening, and then he had asked about the phone.

He took the receiver out on the front porch. He sat down in the rocking chair. The evening was cool. Fireflies were lifting out of the garden like small slow sparks. A mockingbird was running through its whole catalog of other birds, as though practicing.

He dialed his mother's number. He knew it by heart.

"Eli?"

"Hi, Mom."

"Hi, baby. Are you okay?"

"Yeah."

"Is something wrong?"

"No. Nothing's wrong. I just — I wanted to talk. For real, I mean. Not just a checking in."

He heard her breathe in. He heard her set something down — probably a book. He heard her settle into her chair at the kitchen table. The one by the window. He could see her, in his mind, perfectly.

"Okay," she said. "I'm here."

"I have — I have a lot to tell you."

"I have all night, baby."

"Okay."

And so he told her.

He told her about the mica from Mae's station, and about his father's face when Marcus had said *mica was the sky's way of hiding in the dirt.* He told her about the yellow house, and about the smell of the Low Country, and about Aunt Ruth's hands taking his face. He told her about Zhuri — about how Zhuri had been prickly at first, and how Zhuri had taken him into the shed and shown him the shoebox, and how the shoebox had had his father's stones inside.

"Oh," his mother said, softly, when he said that part.

"I know."

"I didn't know. He never told me that either."

"I know."

"Honey — "

"Mom. Wait. There's more."

"Okay."

He told her about the creek. About the gray stone. About Odell on the porch saying *that's a good label.* He told her about the walk with his father by the log, and the talk they had had — not all of it, but enough of it. He told her that his father had cried. He told her that his father had said he was sorry.

"He said that to me?" his mother said.

"No, Mom. To me. He said it to me."

"Oh — oh, right. I'm sorry. I got confused."

"It's okay."

"I'm glad he said it. I am."

"Yeah."

He told her about the gathering. He told her about Miss Lila. He told her about the photograph. He told her about the Praise House. About the song. About the plaque on the wall.

"*One God. One family*," his mother repeated, softly.

"Yeah."

"Oh, Eli."

"I thought of Nasrin."

"Did you?"

"I thought of what she said. That night we went for dinner. About leaves of one tree."

"I remember that night."

"Yeah."

"Leaves of one tree, fruits of one branch. That's right. That's a Bahá'í teaching. *Ye are the fruits of one tree and the leaves of one branch.* Nasrin loves that one."

"It felt — it felt like the same thing, Mom. What Miss Lila said, and the plaque, and Aunt Ruth. It all felt like — "

"Like the same river."

"Yeah."

"Coming up in different places."

"Yeah."

They were quiet a moment.

"Mom."

"Mm."

"I have been — I have been thinking a lot this trip. About. About being — "

"About being biracial."

"Yeah."

"I figured you might. Take your time. I'm here."

He took his time.

He said, "At home it's — I always kind of knew I was. Different, I mean. From some people. From most people. Not in a bad way, just — in a way. Some kids at school would ask me *what are you,* and I never really knew what to say."

"I know."

"And I would — I would say, you know, my mom is white and my dad is Black, which is true, and it's fine, but — it felt like half an answer. And it felt like I didn't — I didn't have the other half."

"I know, Eli. I know I couldn't give you that part. And I feel that. I feel it a lot."

"You didn't do anything wrong."

"I know. But I still feel it. Because you needed it."

"Yeah."

"And now you have some of it."

"Yeah. Now I have — I have Uncle Odell. And Aunt Ruth. And Zhuri. And Miss Lila. And a picture of my great-grandmother. And Dad. Kind of. More of Dad."

"That's a lot, baby."

"It is."

"And — Eli. Listen to me. Are you listening?"

"Yes."

"This doesn't change what you have with me. Okay? I want to say that plain. You being their grandson, their cousin, their great-grandson — it doesn't make you less mine. Families are not — they are not a zero sum. You understand?"

"I do."

"You are both of us, honey. Mine and your dad's. And more than both of us. You are yourself. You are Eli Adams. You gather stones. You are curious, and you are kind, and you are a little shy until you know somebody and then you are funny. You are a whole person. All of us made you, but you — you are the one who is living you."

Eli's eyes stung. He didn't say anything for a second.

"Mom."

"Yeah."

"I missed you."

"I missed you too."

"Thanks for — thanks for letting me come."

"Oh, sweetheart. You don't thank me for that. You thank me for the hard things. This is one of the easy things. Letting you go meet your family. That was easy."

"Wasn't it hard too?"

"Well. A little. Yes. A little. But easy was bigger than hard."

"Okay."

"I'm so proud of you."

"For what?"

"For going. For — for opening yourself up. For letting them in."

"Oh. Okay. Thanks."

"And listen. When you come home — when Dad brings you home next week — we are going to get dinner, just us, and you're gonna tell me everything all over again. And then after that, you and me and Dad are gonna have a conversation. The three of us. About how we do this from here. About what a new rhythm looks like."

"Okay."

"Sound all right?"

"Yeah. Yeah, it sounds really all right."

"Good."

They talked a while longer. She told him about the garden at home. She told him about Will — his best friend — who had stopped by twice to ask when Eli was coming home. She told him about a funny thing the neighbor's dog had done, and about a book she was reading, and about the way the cicadas had started up already this year.

When they hung up, Eli sat a long time with the phone in his lap. The mockingbird had stopped. The fireflies were moving thick now over the garden. The sky was a deep, late blue, not yet full night.

He went back inside. He put the phone on the hook.

Zhuri was at the kitchen table, reading again.

"You okay?" she said, not looking up.

"Yeah."

"Good talk?"

"Yeah."

"Good."

He sat down across from her. He did not need to say anything else. They sat together in the lamplight, the book between them, the yellow house quiet around them, the creek down the path murmuring its endless slow song.

It came fast at the end.

One day was three days was a week was *tomorrow your daddy comes and you go back home.*

Aunt Ruth, that last evening, said, "Come on, baby, we got to pack you up."

They packed together.

— A mason jar, tightly lidded, of her pepper jelly. "For your mama," she said. "Tell her it goes on cream cheese and crackers."

— A paper envelope of sealed seeds, carefully labeled in her round handwriting. Tomato seeds. Basil. Zinnia. Butter beans. "For whatever corner of garden you got up there. Or ask your mama for a little patch. You tell her Aunt Ruth said to say please."

— A small carved wooden fish, about three inches long. Its scales were scored in fine lines. Its eye was a tiny dot of dark wax. "Odell carved it for you. Last week. Out of a piece of cedar. Don't tell him I told you. Let him surprise you tomorrow."

"Oh," Eli said. He had not seen this one. "Is that — "

"That's your daddy and your uncle. 1964. On that very porch out there. Odell's got the solemn face, see? He was trying so hard to look grown. And Marcus — look at that grin."

Eli held the photograph carefully.

"I want you to have that one too," Aunt Ruth said. "It was one of four copies my mother-in-law made. I'm passing you a copy. You put it somewhere where you'll see it."

"I will."

"Now. Go find your shoebox."

"My — "

"Your shoebox. With all your stones. Bring it here."

He pulled it out from under the bed. He brought it. He set it on the dresser.

"Open."

He opened it.

Aunt Ruth lifted the lid the rest of the way. She looked in. She did not say anything for a long time. She looked at the labels — the careful pencil, the masking tape, each small stone on its square of tissue. She ran her finger along the edge of the lid.

"Oh, Eli."

"Yeah."

"This is a wonder."

"Thanks."

"Baby. This is a whole wonder."

She went down through the stones with her finger, not touching, just hovering above. *Gravel lot behind laundromat. Lake shore, Vermont. Storm drain on Maple Street.* Fifty-some stories, each in a fragment of handwriting.

"You keep doing this," she said. "You hear me?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"I want you to add one from the yellow house. One from the creek. Well — you already got one from the creek. But another. And one from the marsh. And one from the gathering. And one from the Praise House. And one from the garden. And one from Miss Lila's, if you pick a little something up tonight when we go over there to say goodbye."

"Okay."

"And you label each one. Fresh labels. Your neatest handwriting."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Okay."

"*Both ends closed, middle full.* That's a story."

"Okay."

They spent the next hour labeling. Aunt Ruth held the strips of masking tape while Eli wrote. He wrote *Back porch of yellow house. July 1. Aunt Ruth sat with me.* He wrote *Creek, fishing rock. June 20. The day I caught my first bass. Threw him back.* He wrote *Garden, under Aunt Ruth's zinnias. June 26. First morning I woke up feeling like I knew where I was.* He wrote *Miss Lila's yard. July 1. She gave me a photograph.* He wrote *Praise House. June 28. One God, one family.*

He wrote six new labels. He placed each one around its stone, its small square of tissue paper.

There were now fifty-three stones in his box at home, plus the twelve from his father. Sixty-five stones. A small citizenry.

He closed the lid.

He set the box on top of the folded T-shirts in his suitcase.

He zipped the suitcase.

Aunt Ruth put a hand on his back.

"Eli."

"Yes, ma'am."

"We gonna miss you something terrible tomorrow."

"I — I'm gonna miss you too."

"You gonna come back?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Promise?"

"I promise."

"Good."

She hugged him. She smelled of basil and of bread. He put his forehead against her shoulder and closed his eyes. She was small. But she was sure.

They went downstairs.

Uncle Odell was on the porch, rocking. He had a small piece of paper in his hand. He looked up when Eli and Aunt Ruth came out.

"You got a minute, Eli?" he said.

"Yes, sir."

Aunt Ruth tactfully went inside.

Eli sat down in the rocker next to his uncle. The paper in Odell's hand was folded into quarters.

"I wrote you something," Odell said. "I'm not good at talking. You and me, we did pretty good with talking, this summer. I'm proud of that. But when I ain't right in front of you, I figure words might be easier on paper."

"Okay."

"So. I wrote a letter. It's short. Don't read it yet. Read it when you're home. All right?"

"Yes, sir."

"Tuck it in your suitcase."

Eli took the paper. He tucked it in his pocket for now.

"And — " Odell leaned down. He reached under his rocker. He brought up a small wooden shape, wrapped in a cloth. "For you. From me. I know your aunt told you about it. That woman can't keep a secret."

Eli laughed — a small wet laugh.

He unwrapped the cloth.

It was the cedar fish.

It was perfect. It was small enough to fit in his palm. Its fins were carved in long gentle curves. Its eye was a tiny wax bead. There was a small hole drilled just behind the head.

"I didn't know if you wanted it on a cord or not," Odell said. "You can hang it or just keep it. Cord's up to you."

Eli held the fish. He did not cry. But it was near.

"Uncle, I — "

"Mm."

"I — "

"Come here, son."

Odell pulled him in. The hug was firm. It smelled of coffee and soap and a very faint cologne Eli would remember afterwards for years without being able to name.

"You my blood," Odell said, low, near Eli's ear. "You hear me? You my blood. Ain't no distance change that. Ain't no silence change that. Ain't nothing."

"Yes, sir."

"You call me anytime."

"Yes, sir."

"Anytime, boy. Three in the morning. I answer the phone when it rings. Ask your daddy."

"Okay."

"Good."

That night they ate together one more time, the four of them, at the kitchen table. Aunt Ruth had made shrimp and grits — the same dish she had made the first night he'd arrived. "Bookend," she said, when she set the plate down.

Zhuri, across the table, kept stealing glances at him. She was trying not to be sad. She was twelve. She was not going to let herself cry at dinner. Eli did not look at her too long. He did not want to push her over.

He did not speak.

Nobody needed him to.

At bedtime, Zhuri stopped him in the hall.

"Hey."

"Hey."

"I'm not going to say goodbye tomorrow."

"Why?"

"Because we're not done. We're gonna video call. A lot. I'm serious. I have your mom's number too. Grandma gave it to me. So. Don't even say goodbye."

"Okay."

"Don't."

"Okay."

She looked at him.

Then, very quickly, she hugged him. Tight. Her braids pressed against his cheek. She smelled a little like lotion. She let him go just as fast.

"Okay," she said. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight, Zhuri."

She went into her room.

Eli stood in the hall a minute.

Then he went into the guest room. He set the cedar fish on the pillow beside his own head. He lay down.

He did not think he would sleep.

He slept almost immediately.

His father came the next morning.

The goodbyes were fast, because long goodbyes make everything worse. Aunt Ruth hugged him on the porch and said, "Write to me, baby," and Uncle Odell hugged him by the car and said, "Don't forget you my blood," and Zhuri did not come outside at all — he saw her, when he looked up at a second-story window, with her hand pressed to the glass, and he pressed his hand to the air in answer, and that was the goodbye they had arranged not to say.

His father loaded the suitcase into the trunk.

His father said, "Ready?"

Eli said, "Yeah."

They drove.

The drive back was long, but it was different from the drive down. On the drive down, there had been so much Eli didn't know. Now, on the drive back, he was carrying so much. He had his suitcase in the trunk. He had the cedar fish in his pocket. He had the letter from Odell, unread, in the inside pocket of his jacket. He had his notebook with the photograph of Minnie Adams tucked between two pages. He had his voice, heavier now. He had his father beside him, also heavier.

They talked.

Not all the time. But more than on the drive down. His father told him about his apartment in Atlanta. His father told him about a gig he had the following week. His father told him about the bowl of stones on his windowsill — Eli had asked, finally — and his father said yes, there were about thirty stones in it, collected over thirty years, and Eli could see the bowl whenever he came.

"I'd like that," Eli said.

"Spring break?"

"Spring break."

"Your mom'll want to come too. For part. If that's all right."

"Yeah. That's all right."

They stopped for gas at Mae's station again.

"Mica," his father said, grinning, when Eli got out. "Stay out of that lot, son. You already got one of those."

Eli laughed.

But he walked the edge of the lot anyway. He did not find anything. That was all right. Not every stop was a stone stop.

They drove on.

They stopped for the night at a motel off the highway. Two beds. A small TV. They ordered pizza. They watched half a bad action movie. They laughed, once, at exactly the same second, at exactly the same silly line, and they looked at each other, surprised, and Eli's father said, "We do that. You got my laugh." And Eli said, "I think I did." And they laughed again.

They slept with the air conditioner running low.

The next afternoon, they pulled into the driveway of the small house in New Jersey where Eli lived with his mother.

His mother was on the porch. She was in her old gray cardigan. She was pretending, pretty badly, not to be watching the street.

When the car came around the corner, she stood up.

She came down the steps as Eli's father parked.

Eli got out.

He did not run. He walked, because he wanted the moment to be big, and running would have made it smaller. He walked right to her, and she opened her arms, and he walked into them.

"Hi, Mom."

"Hi, baby."

She held him. She did not say anything for a long time. She just held him. He was taller than when he had left. She seemed to be noticing that. Her chin was now easy to rest on top of his head, rather than having to duck down.

Eli's father stood back a little, by the car.

"Marcus," Eli's mother said, over Eli's shoulder.

"Rachel."

"Come in. Come in. I've made too much food. Whatever you want."

"I — if you don't mind, I should get back. Long drive. But — I'd like to come in for a minute."

"Come in for a minute."

He did.

They sat on the porch, the three of them, with glasses of iced tea. Eli's mother had set out a plate of cookies. Eli told stories, but he could not tell them all; they would keep for weeks. His mother laughed, and nodded, and kept reaching over, as if to confirm he was really home, to squeeze his elbow or touch his hair.

Eli's father drank one glass of tea. Then he stood up.

"I should go."

"Okay."

"Sunday, buddy."

"Sunday."

"Four o'clock."

"I'll be here."

He hugged Eli. He was going to leave without anything else, but Eli's mother touched his arm.

"Marcus," she said, quietly.

"Yeah."

"Thank you."

He nodded. He did not trust his voice. He turned. He got in his car. He drove away.

Eli and his mother stood on the porch, arm around each other, watching him go.

When he was out of sight, his mother said, "Come on. Let's get your suitcase inside."

They carried it up together.

In Eli's small square bedroom, he set the suitcase down in the middle of the floor. His room looked exactly the same as he had left it, and also totally different, in the way a place you have been away from for three weeks always looks different. The same, but slightly smaller. Or slightly larger. Or slightly shifted in some way you could not quite put your finger on.

He unzipped the suitcase.

He took out the shoebox.

He carried it over to the bed and climbed up onto the bed with it. His mother sat on the corner of the bed.

"Show me," she said.

"I'll show you everything."

He opened the lid. He walked her through the new stones. The creek stone. The gray one. The piece of the wall. The marsh shell. The Praise House stone (a little white chip he had picked up in the gravel of the parking lot on the way out). The Miss Lila stone — a small piece of worn brick from near her front steps that he had, at Aunt Ruth's prompting, put in his pocket before they left her house. The gathering stone — a piece of grit he had found in the yard after everyone had gone. The garden stone. The yellow house stone.

Seven new ones.

His mother listened to every label. She did not rush him. When he was done, he sat a moment in the silence.

"Mom."

"Yes."

"There's one more I need to add today."

"What is it?"

"I have to go find it."

"Right now?"

"Yeah."

"Go."

He went. He put the shoebox on his pillow. He went downstairs and out the back door. His mother's yard was small but full — a couple of rose bushes, a patch of mint, a maple tree, a little fence.

He walked along the edge of the fence. He looked down at his feet.

There, near the base of the fence, half-buried in the soil that had been kicked up by rain, was a stone. A small gray stone, almost round. It looked a little bit like the gray stone from the creek behind Uncle Odell's house, though not quite. It was just a backyard stone. Just a stone.

He picked it up.

He cleaned it off on his T-shirt.

He held it in his palm.

He went back inside.

*Backyard, home. July 4. The day I came home from the first half I hadn't met.*

*Family.*

Just that. One word.

He placed the stone on its square of tissue. He set it in the shoebox. He closed the lid.

He slid the shoebox back under the bed.

His mother was in the doorway, watching.

"What?" he said.

"Nothing."

"What, Mom."

"I was just thinking."

"What?"

"How much I love you. That's all. Just that."

"I love you too."

"I know."

She came over. She sat next to him on the bed. She leaned her shoulder lightly against his. The sun was coming through the window in the late-afternoon way it did, golden on the floor, warm on the edge of the bed where their knees were.

"Eli."

"Mm."

"Let's plant those seeds. Tomorrow. In the corner by the fence. We can make you a little garden."

"Yeah."

"We'll send Aunt Ruth pictures when they come up."

"Yeah."

"And we'll video call your cousin."

"Yeah."

"And we'll go see your dad in the spring."

"Yeah."

"And you and I — " she said, and she turned and put a hand on his cheek so that he would look at her — "you and I are going to be exactly what we have always been. Plus more. Just plus more. Do you know what I mean?"

"Yes."

"Good."

She kissed his forehead.

She got up.

"Supper in an hour," she said, going out. "Your favorite. Spaghetti."

"Okay."

She went downstairs.

He lay back on his bed a while.

After a while, he remembered the letter from Uncle Odell. He sat up. He got his jacket out of the suitcase. He pulled the folded paper from the inside pocket. He sat cross-legged on the bed and unfolded it.

His uncle's handwriting was large and plain.

*Eli —*

*I am not a writer. So I will say only a few things.*

*You were missing. We did not know exactly what was missing, but we knew it. And this summer, you came, and the missing was filled. That is a word that does not often apply in a life. Filled.*

*Your daddy is a good man. He has not always known how to be one, to you. But he is learning. You are helping him. Keep helping him. Be patient with him the way we been patient with each other, over the years.*

*Your Aunt Ruth loves you. So does Zhuri, though she will not say it for a while yet because she is a proud girl. I love you too.*

*You are the stone gatherer of this family now. That is a job you already had. Only now you know you had it.*

*Come back soon.*

*Uncle Odell.*

Eli read it once.

Then again.

He folded the letter. He walked to his dresser. He opened the top drawer. He tucked the letter into the front of the drawer, where he would always find it first, any time he opened that drawer.

He went to wash up for dinner.

EPILOGUE

The autumn came, as it does.

The maple in the front yard went from green to yellow to orange to red, and the red to rust, and the rust, finally, to a quiet bare brown that let the light through the branches in new narrow lines. The seeds from Aunt Ruth's envelope had gone into a small patch of earth by the back fence, and a good many of them had come up — the tomatoes most of all, three stout plants that produced, by early October, two laundry baskets full of small sweet fruit that Eli and his mother ate for breakfast with salt, and that they carried in a paper bag across the street to give half away to the neighbors. The zinnias had come up too, and had bloomed all September in a riot of pink and orange and deep magenta, and when they finally died back, Eli cut the stems and saved the heads for seed, as Aunt Ruth had told him to.

Every Sunday at four o'clock, his father called. Sometimes the calls were long. Sometimes they were short. Sometimes they were only about soccer scores and what Eli had eaten for lunch. That was all right. They were calls. They were kept. They added up.

Twice, Eli video-called Zhuri after school. Once they talked for an hour. The second time, Aunt Ruth and Uncle Odell appeared behind her, and the phone became four faces crowded into one rectangle, all talking over each other, all laughing, and Eli laughed so much his mother came in to see what was happening, and then she was in the rectangle too. It was the best half hour of September.

Eli smiled a long time at the photograph.

On a Saturday in late October, the light coming through his window in that slow, thin autumn way, Eli sat on his bed with the shoebox open in his lap. Sixty-six stones now. He went through them slowly. He knew them all, by sight, by story. He thought about all the people each stone connected him to — about the chain of people behind him, back and back, and the chain of people walking alongside him now, and the chain of people he would meet, someday, who were not yet met.

He reached in. He lifted out the small gray river stone — the first one he had found at the creek behind Uncle Odell's house.

He held it in his palm.

It was smooth. It was heavy. It had soaked up the warmth of his hand already.

He thought of his father. He thought of Uncle Odell. He thought of his great-grandfather Ephraim, with his brick hands, laying shells on a windowsill. He thought of his great-grandmother Minnie, who had held that grandfather on her hip and taught another little girl to weave baskets out of sweetgrass. He thought of Aunt Ruth, and her wall, and her tears in the sunlight. He thought of his mother, downstairs right now making soup.

He lifted the stone to his lips. Lightly. The way a person might kiss a photograph. The way a person might kiss a letter from a long-ago friend. The way a person might send a small word of love, through a small hard thing, into the air, to be carried wherever air carries such words.

He placed the stone back in the box.

He closed the lid.

He put the box under the bed.

Then he went downstairs, where his mother was stirring soup at the stove, and he stood beside her for a minute without saying anything, and she put her arm around his waist, and together they watched the soup go round, a slow warm circle of carrot and onion and broth, and outside the window the late-afternoon light went on falling slowly across the yard, where the tomato plants stood brown and bare and finished, and where the small corner of garden rested, waiting, until it would be time to plant it again in the spring.

AUTHOR'S NOTE

This is a story about a boy finding a part of himself he didn't know was missing, and about the people who were waiting to show it to him. Eli Adams is a child of two worlds, as many children are, and the great accident of his life was that he had not yet been given the map to one of them. This book imagines what it is like when the map finally unfolds — not with drama, not with fireworks, but quietly, over meals, over gardening, over a conversation on a fallen log, over the passing of a single stone from one palm to another.

The Gullah-Geechee people of the South Carolina and Georgia Low Country are a living American treasure. Their language, their foodways, their spirituals, their skills and their stories have endured through centuries of hardship and joy, and they continue to shape the cultural life of this country every day. The Praise Houses are real, small wooden buildings where prayer has been kept for generations. The sweetgrass baskets are real. The shrimpers, the marsh gardens, the careful relationships between families and their ancestors — all of it is real, and all of it is ongoing. If this book sends a young reader looking to learn more, they will find rich and generous teachers awaiting them. I recommend starting with books by Gullah-Geechee authors and community historians themselves; they are the ones who should be telling this story most of all.

This is also a book about the oneness of humanity. There is a teaching that calls all of us the leaves of one tree and the fruits of one branch. It is a simple teaching. It is also, as a friend of Eli's mother once told him, the hardest thing in the world to live. Every time a family is split and remembers itself back together, the branch remembers. Every time a stranger becomes a brother, a leaf finds its tree. May every child who reads this story, of whatever background, feel the quiet invitation of that truth. You are not alone. A FINAL WORD, FROM THE AUTHOR

I wrote this book thinking about all the children I have known whose families live in more than one place, or more than one culture, or more than one color of skin. I wrote it thinking about the cousins they have not yet met, the grandparents whose voices they have not yet heard, the aunts who are making pepper jelly in kitchens far away. I wrote it thinking about a summer that might come, one year, for one of those children — a summer when the map unfolds, and a yellow house turns out to have been waiting all along.

I also wrote it thinking about the stones. I have my own small collection, on a shelf by my desk. There is a piece of granite from a road trip I took with my mother when I was twelve. There is a smooth black stone from a beach where I said goodbye to a friend. There is a chip of red brick from the first house my grandparents owned. There is a piece of creek rock given to me by a child whose name I cannot now remember, but whose face I can see if I close my eyes, and who was very solemn about handing it to me, and very pleased when I thanked him.

Stones remember us, I think, the way we remember them. They are quiet about it. That is part of why I love them.

If you ever find yourself far from home — in a place that feels unfamiliar, with people who look a little different from you, speaking a little differently than you are used to — try gathering something small, and carrying it home, and keeping it where you will see it often.
