The letter was sitting on the front desk of the Birchwood Branch Library like a small white bird that had flown in and died.
But this letter. This letter she noticed because it did not belong there.
Letters did not sit on the front desk at the Birchwood Branch. Not like this, not propped up against the little brass bell with CITY OF FAIRBRIDGE printed in dark blue block letters at the top.
Ms. Abebe was not at the desk. That was strange, too. Ms. Abebe was almost always at the desk at three-thirty on a Tuesday, because that was when the elementary school kids came pouring in.
Amara leaned over the letter, not quite touching it, and read.

*We regret to inform you that the Birchwood Branch Library, a part of the Fairbridge Public Library System, will be closing its doors on June 30 of this year due to ongoing municipal budget shortfalls. Amara read it again. Then a third time. Each time the words stayed the same, which was how words worked, but somehow she kept expecting them to rearrange themselves into something else.
*Closing its doors.*
June 30. That was four months away. Four months.
The library had always been here. That was a fact. Like the sidewalk. Like the oak tree out front, which had a knot on it that looked like a frog. Like the church bells at St. Agatha's that rang on the hour and were sometimes a minute late. The library was a thing the neighborhood had, the way a person had a heart. You didn't think about it until something went wrong.
Amara felt her throat get tight in that warning way it got before tears.
She looked around. There was Mr. Ngyuen at the computer table, typing very slowly with two fingers. There was a mother she didn't know with a toddler in the picture book nook. There were two high school girls who had spread their notebooks all over the big study table even though there were only two of them, which Amara privately thought was rude. None of them was reading the letter. None of them knew.
"Oh, honey."
Amara turned. Ms. Abebe had come out from the back office, carrying a small stack of returned books balanced against her hip. Her curly gray hair was pulled back with a bright blue scarf. Her glasses, as always, had slid halfway down her nose. She was looking at Amara looking at the letter, and her face was doing the thing faces did when grownups did not know how to tell children hard news.
"You saw it," Ms. Abebe said.
"It says the library is closing."
"Yes."
"On June 30th."
"Yes."
Amara did not cry. She was not a child who cried easily. Her father had told her once that she had been born with a serious face, which was a thing people said about babies sometimes but which had turned out to be true. She had looked up from her crib with her dark eyes solemn and steady and had seemed to be taking the measurement of the world.
She took the measurement of this now.
"Why?" she asked.
Ms. Abebe set down the books. She came around the desk. She was a tall woman, taller than Amara's father even, and she moved like a person who had been a long time in her body and knew all of its angles. She put her hand on Amara's shoulder.
"Money," Ms. Abebe said. "The city says there is not enough for five branches anymore. They say this one serves the fewest people. They say the building is too old and would cost too much to fix. They say a lot of things, Amara. But what it comes down to is money."
"But people use this library."
"Yes."
"I use this library."
"I know you do, *wullige*," Ms. Abebe said, using the Amharic word she sometimes used for Amara, which meant something like *little one* or *dear one*. Amara did not mind being called *little one* by Ms. Abebe. Ms. Abebe could call her a tadpole and she wouldn't mind.
"What about the books?"
"Some will be moved to other branches. Some will be sold. Some will be…" Ms. Abebe hesitated. "Recycled."
Amara thought about books being recycled. She thought about the copy of *Charlotte's Web* she had read when she was seven, the one with the torn front cover and the water stain shaped like a little hat. She thought about the picture books in the nook that she had read so many times when she was small that she had them memorized. She thought about the whole tall shelf of Ethiopian folktales Ms. Abebe had ordered especially because she had noticed Amara reading African history one afternoon, and had asked if she wanted to learn more.
A book could not be recycled. A book was not a tin can.
"Ms. Abebe," Amara said. "What about you?"
Ms. Abebe smiled a small, tired smile. "I am being reassigned. To the Central Branch downtown. They are very kind. They told me I won't lose my job."
"But you love *this* branch."
"Yes," Ms. Abebe said. "I do."
For a moment neither of them said anything. Amara looked at the letter. Ms. Abebe looked at Amara. The high school girls at the study table laughed too loud about something. Mr. Nguyen kept typing.
"Can I take this?" Amara said, pointing at the letter.
"The letter?"
"Yes."
"I've got copies. There are copies going out in the mail to everyone in the neighborhood this week." Ms. Abebe tilted her head. "What are you going to do with it, Amara?"
Amara didn't know yet. She only knew that she wanted it. She wanted to hold it and look at it and let the fact of it sink all the way in.
"Just," she said. "Keep it."
"Take it."
The library door jingled. A kindergarten boy came in with his mother, beelined for the picture book nook. Ms. Abebe gave Amara's shoulder one last squeeze and turned to greet them with the big wide smile she gave to every child who walked in.
Amara went to her usual chair. It was a squishy armchair the color of a pumpkin, wedged between the Nonfiction and the big window. She sat in it. She did not open her book. She looked out at the oak tree with the frog-knot, and the parked cars, and the corner of Birchwood Street where a lady was walking a small brown dog.
Four months.
Four months was a long time, she thought. Four months was a long time if you were waiting for something. It was a short time if you were saying goodbye.
Amara was not ready to say goodbye.
She was not sure what she *was* ready for, exactly. But something. Something.
She sat in the pumpkin chair until Aunt Nyalong came to get her, and when Aunt Nyalong asked how her day had been, Amara said *fine* in a voice that was small but steady, and she did not tell her about the letter yet. She would tell her. But first she wanted to hold it inside her a little longer. First she wanted to think.
All the way home, walking past the bakery and the laundromat and the dry cleaners where Mr. Polanski's gray coat was always hanging in the window, she thought.
By the time they reached their apartment building, Amara had not yet decided what she would do. But she had decided, very firmly, the thing underneath the thing.
She was not going to let them take the library.
She was not.

Amara told her father about the letter at dinner.
They were eating *kissra* and stew, which Aunt Nyalong had made, the thin sour bread you tore with your fingers and used to scoop up bites. Her father was dressed for work, in his blue scrubs, with the little ID badge clipped to the chest pocket that said DENG, A. RN, NIGHT. He worked at Fairbridge General in the neonatal intensive care unit, which meant his job was caring for the smallest, newest babies in the world. He had very gentle hands, her father. Amara had watched him change a diaper once on a doll when she was playing hospital, and it had been one of the most careful things she had ever seen.
"The library on Birchwood?" her father said. He had stopped chewing.
"Yes."
"They are *closing* it?"
"June 30th."
Her father set down his piece of *kissra*. He looked at Aunt Nyalong. Aunt Nyalong looked back at him. Amara watched them exchange one of those grownup looks that had whole paragraphs of meaning stuffed into a second.
"This is the one you go to every day," her father said.
"Yes."
"The one with Mrs. Abebe."
"Ms. Abebe."
"Ms. Abebe. Yes." Her father rubbed his eyes. He did that a lot, lately. He had not been sleeping enough since he had taken on extra shifts last fall. "*Ahh.* Amara. I am sorry. That library — I know you love it."
"It's not just that I love it," Amara said. Even as she said it, the idea was becoming clearer in her head, like a photograph rising up in a developer tray. "It's that it's the library. It's *ours.* The neighborhood's. Where else is a kid supposed to go after school? Where else does Mr. Nguyen do his emails? Where are the storytimes going to be?"
"There are other libraries."
"Not in walking distance. Not for people who don't have cars."
Her father nodded slowly. He was a man who listened. It was one of the best things about him. Even when he was tired, which he almost always was, he listened.
"And," Amara said, her throat doing the tight thing again, "and Ms. Abebe."
"They are firing Ms. Abebe?"
"Reassigning. To the downtown branch."
"Ah."
Aunt Nyalong, who had been quiet, tore off a piece of *kissra* and held it thoughtfully in her fingers. Aunt Nyalong was her father's older sister. She had come to America eight years after he had, after her own husband — Amara's uncle, whom Amara had never met — had died of an illness they could not treat in the camps. She was a large woman with a round face and skin the color of roasted coffee, and she had the sort of voice that made you want to lean in, low and slow and careful, as though each word had been weighed before it was spoken.
"Amara," Aunt Nyalong said, "what do you think you will do?"
"I don't know yet."
"Mmm."
Her father put a hand on her head. "*Mama,*" he said, which was his name for her. It was what he had called her mother, too, and when Amara was very small she had worried that it would get confusing, but it never had. "Whatever you decide, I will help if I can. I cannot promise much time. But what I have, I will give."
"I know, Dad."
"And your auntie also."
"Yes," said Aunt Nyalong. "Also me."
After dinner her father left for his shift, kissing the top of Amara's head and squeezing Aunt Nyalong on the shoulder. Aunt Nyalong washed the dishes and Amara dried them and stacked them in the cupboard that wobbled because one of its hinges was loose. Their apartment was not a big apartment. It was three rooms, four if you counted the bathroom. But Aunt Nyalong kept it bright with hanging plants and a string of little paper birds and embroidered cloths she had made with her own hands, in colors that made you feel like the room was humming.
When she was done she sat at the table with her chin in her hands and her mind still full of library.
"Auntie?" she said.
"Mm?" Aunt Nyalong was sewing a button on a blouse.
"What do people do when something they love is going to go away?"
Aunt Nyalong looked up. She had a way of looking at you that made you feel *seen,* like she was really taking a picture of you and not just letting her eyes rest on you by accident.
"Some people cry," she said. "Some people get angry. Some people pretend the thing is not happening. Some people hide. Some people get busy. Some people fight." She paused. "And some people gather."
"Gather?"
"And then what?"
Aunt Nyalong smiled, her slow beautiful smile. "And then," she said, "they do something. Or they find out they cannot. But they do not do it alone."
Amara thought about this.
She thought about it some more while she was brushing her teeth, and while she was climbing under her quilt, and while the streetlight outside her window made a moving pattern on her ceiling where a branch waved.
Before she fell asleep, she reached for her phone, which was the old one that had been her father's before he got a new one from work, and she sent a text to her two favorite people in the world.
She hit send. She set down her phone. She stared at the ceiling.
*Some people gather,* Aunt Nyalong had said.
All right, Amara thought. We'll gather.
She fell asleep imagining the pumpkin chair, empty. She did not like the image. She would not let it become real.

Saturday came and with it the smell of Aunt Nyalong's spiced tea and the sound of Omar Rashid clomping up the stairs two at a time with his backpack banging against his back.
"Cuz!" Omar shouted, bursting through the door. "I'm here to save the library!"
"Shh," Amara said.
"Why are we shushing?"
"Because Dad is sleeping."
"Right. Right. Sorry, *Ami* Wol!" Omar called down the hallway, which was not quieter than his first shout, but it was at least apologetic. *Ami* meant *uncle.* Omar was Amara's father's nephew, the son of her father's cousin, which made him her first-cousin-once-removed, but they had grown up calling each other cuz, and cuz they remained.
Omar was twelve, only a year older than Amara, but he was already tall the way her father was tall, and he had her father's long hands. He wore his hair short and his favorite sweatshirt had a stylized drawing of a soldering iron on it that said GOOD CIRCUITS AHEAD. He loved anything with wires and anything with a screen and anything he could take apart and put back together, which in their family was a surprisingly useful skill. He had fixed Aunt Nyalong's toaster. He had fixed Amara's bike. Last year he had fixed a broken ceiling fan for Mrs. Kwame across the hall, and Mrs. Kwame had paid him in honey cake, a currency Omar thought was better than money.
Jenna arrived ten minutes later. Jenna was Amara's best friend. They had known each other since first grade, when Jenna had walked up to her on the first day of school and said, *"You're new. I'm Jenna. Do you want to be my friend?"* and Amara had said *yes* because she had never been asked a question so clearly in her life. That had been five years ago and the friendship had held, through losing teeth and getting glasses and the Great Cafeteria Incident of fourth grade that neither of them liked to talk about.
Jenna was half-Puerto Rican, half-Filipino, and all opinions. She had thick black hair that she wore in two long braids and eyes that looked angry when she was thinking, which had gotten her in trouble with teachers who did not know her and praised by teachers who did. Her mother, Daniela Morales, was on the Fairbridge City Council, which was a fact Jenna mentioned almost every time they met a new adult and then pretended not to care about.
The three of them settled on the floor of Amara's bedroom with a plate of fresh injera and honey between them. Aunt Nyalong had put on music in the kitchen and shut the door to give them privacy. She was, Amara thought with a rush of love, extremely good at being an aunt.
Amara took the letter out of her backpack pouch and smoothed it flat on the rug.
"Okay," she said. "Read."
Jenna read first. Her eyes got that angry thinking look. Omar read over her shoulder, one hand on his chin.
"Oh, no," said Jenna.
"Oh, no," said Omar.
"Yeah," said Amara.
"They can't just *close* the library," Jenna said. "Can they?"
"They're a city council," Amara said. "They can do whatever they want."
"My mom is on the city council," Jenna said. She said it like a fact that was also kind of a weight. "She hasn't said anything about this."
"Maybe she doesn't know," said Omar.
"She knows everything," Jenna said flatly.
The three of them sat for a moment with the letter between them. Amara felt, suddenly and strangely, how much she loved these two. How lucky she was to have them. How lucky she was to have anyone.
"Okay," said Amara. "Here's what I think. I think we fight. I think we save it."
"Yes," said Jenna.
"Definitely," said Omar.
"But I don't know *how.*"
"Good," said Amara.
"Town meeting," said Jenna. "They have to have public meetings before they close things. That's the law. I think. My mom would know."
"Okay. Yes."
"Pressure," said Jenna. "On the council. They respond to pressure. Letters. Phone calls. Showing up."
"Okay."
Amara had taken out her notebook, the one with the purple cover and the elastic band. She was writing fast. Her handwriting was usually neat but it was getting messier in her excitement. *Petition. Website. Town meeting. Letters. Show up.* She drew a little box around each one.
"What else?" she said.
"The media," said Omar. "Like, the local paper. Get it in the news."
"Good."
"Can a kid do that?" Jenna said. "Go to a newspaper?"
"Why not?" Omar said. "We are the people affected. It's our library."
"Good point."
*Media,* wrote Amara.
They were quiet for a moment, thinking.
"The reason they're closing it," Omar said slowly, "is money, right?"
"Right."
"So we'd have to give them a reason that's stronger than money."
"Like what?"
"I don't know," said Omar. "But that's the puzzle. Because money is usually the thing that wins. Unless there's something else people care about more."
The three of them sat with that.
Amara thought about the pumpkin chair. She thought about Ms. Abebe and the Ethiopian folktales. She thought about the toddler in the picture book nook whose mother she hadn't recognized but who looked as though she had found, in the library, a small warm quiet hour of her week.
"Community," Amara said. "That's what they care about. That's what the library *is.*"
"Right," said Jenna.
"We just have to show them. We have to show them what it really is. That it's not just books. That it's — *us.*"
They nodded at one another, three serious faces around the letter and the plate of injera.
"When does this start?" Omar said.
"Now," said Amara.
"Now now?"
"Now now."
*SAVE THE BIRCHWOOD LIBRARY.*
*For everyone.*
She drew a little heart. Then, embarrassed, she crossed it out. Then, braver, she drew it again.
Outside the window, the afternoon had gone gold. Aunt Nyalong knocked on the door with a tray of tea and little round cookies. The three of them worked and ate and argued and laughed until the sky turned purple and Jenna's mother texted her to come home.
It was not a complete plan. But it was a beginning.
A beginning, Amara thought, was sometimes the bravest part.

On Monday after school Amara and Jenna walked to City Hall.
City Hall was a big stone building with pillars. It looked, Amara thought, like a building that was pretending to be older and more important than it was. It had been built in the nineteen-sixties, she knew, because she had read about it once in a pamphlet at the library. But whoever had designed it had made it look like something out of ancient Rome. Grown-ups, she was learning, liked to make things look more serious than they were.
Inside, there was a big cool lobby with marble floors and a directory on the wall. Amara and Jenna stood in front of the directory and tried to look like they knew what they were doing.
"City council," Amara said, running her finger down the list. "Room 214."
"Does the council meet in that room?"
"I don't know. I think it's their offices."
"Let's just look."
They took the elevator up to the second floor. The hallway was quiet, with gray carpet and doors with little brass plaques. Room 214 said COUNCIL CHAMBERS. The door was closed.
There was a bulletin board next to it. On the bulletin board, pinned to the cork, was a schedule.
- First Tuesday of the month, 7 p.m. — Regular Session - Third Tuesday of the month, 7 p.m. — Committee of the Whole - Special meetings as announced - All meetings open to the public
"First Tuesday is next week," Jenna said.
"That's the one we go to."
"What do you do at one of those?"
"I don't know. Watch, I guess."
There was also a folder attached to the bulletin board with the word AGENDAS in marker on the front. Amara took one out and unfolded it. It was the agenda from the last meeting.
Item 8. There it was.
"Room 108," Amara said.
They took the elevator back down.
Room 108 was the City Clerk's Office. The lady behind the counter was very small with glasses on a beaded chain. She looked at them over her lunch of a microwaved burrito.
"Can I help you, dears?"
"We'd like the supporting materials for the library consolidation plan," Amara said, trying to sound as official as possible. "From last month's meeting."
The lady blinked twice. Then she smiled. "Aren't you well-spoken! Hold on a minute, sweetheart."
She disappeared into a back room. She came back with a thick stapled packet. She slid it across the counter.
"On the house," she said, as though they were having pie. "You let me know if you need anything else, all right?"
Amara held the packet against her chest, feeling like someone had just handed her a treasure map.
Out on the stone steps of City Hall, the girls sat down. Amara flipped through the packet.
It was full of charts. Bar graphs of library usage. Little maps with colored dots. Spreadsheets of costs and square footage and age of the building. There was a section called Branch Profiles and, at the very back, a page with the words BIRCHWOOD BRANCH – PROPOSED CLOSURE on it.
Amara ran her finger over the numbers.
Two hundred and eighty-seven people a week. That was a lot. That was her and Mr. Nguyen and the toddler and the high school girls and the mothers with strollers and the old man with the beret who read the newspapers and the teenagers who came in with their laptops and the reading club on Thursday nights and the bilingual storytime on Saturday mornings and *two hundred and eighty-seven* separate human visits to her library, every week.
And the city said that was declining.
"Okay," Jenna said, reading over her shoulder. "So if we want to save it, we need to show that more people use it than they think."
"And we need to show that it's worth the money."
"Yes."
"Three hundred and twelve thousand dollars a year is a *lot* of money."
"It is."
They were quiet for a minute. A man in a suit came down the stone steps past them without really seeing them. A bus hissed at the corner.
"Amara," Jenna said slowly.
"Yeah?"
"My mom knows about this."
"Yeah, I figured."
"She's on the committee that makes these recommendations. She had to have voted to include this in the plan."
Amara looked at Jenna. Jenna's angry-thinking look was on full. But under it, Amara could see, was something else. Something complicated. Something hurt.
"Did you ask her?" Amara said, carefully.
"I asked her last night. She said it was a hard decision and that some branches have to close and that she's sorry but the numbers are the numbers."
"Oh."
"She said — she said, *honey, I hear you, but this isn't something you should get involved in.*"
"Oh."
Jenna was looking straight ahead at a pigeon that was eyeing a french fry near a trash can. Her braids were very tight and straight. She was sitting very still.
"Are you mad at her?" Amara asked.
"I don't know," Jenna said. "I love her. But I think she's wrong."
"Yeah."
"Is that allowed?"
"Loving somebody and thinking they're wrong?"
"Yeah."
Amara thought about her father, who she adored and who sometimes bought her a chocolate bar as a treat that she had told him twice was the kind of chocolate she did not like, the kind with the crunchy bits. She thought about her aunt, whom she loved more than anyone, and who had once insisted on putting a wool sweater on Amara in June because Aunt Nyalong always felt cold in the American indoors. She thought about her mother, whom she did not remember but loved anyway, and whom her father sometimes mentioned with an expression on his face that said he had, in his own way, loved his wife and also disagreed with her about many things.
"Yes," Amara said. "It's allowed. It happens all the time."
"Okay," said Jenna. "Good."
They ate their apples and cheese on the steps of City Hall. They watched the pigeons commit small thefts. They did not speak for a while, but it was a friendly silence, the kind that happened between best friends who had already said the important thing.
After a while Jenna said, "I want to help save this library."
"I know."
"Even if it means being on the other side from my mom."
"I know."
"Okay."
"Okay."
They stood up. They shouldered their backpacks. They walked home with the packet tucked carefully into Amara's bag, past the pigeon appointment and the bank and the closed-up movie theater, talking about the things they were going to do, and how they were going to do them, and who they were going to ask for help.

Kai Nakashima sat at a different desk every day of the week.
This was one of the things Amara had noticed about him.
Mondays he sat by the window. Tuesdays he sat at the desk nearest the bookshelf. Wednesdays he sat in the back corner. Thursdays near the door. Fridays he sat wherever was left. Amara had never asked him why. She had gone to school with him since second grade and he had never really been her friend, just a boy she sort of knew, a boy with a soft voice who rarely raised his hand but, when he did, said something that made the teacher pause.
He came up to her on Wednesday at recess.
"Amara?"
Kai had black hair that flopped into his eyes and he was the kind of kid who wore the same brown jacket even when it was too warm for a jacket. He was not small for his age but he gave the impression of being small, as though he were always trying to take up a little less space than he had to.
"Hi, Kai."
"I heard about the library."
"Oh."
"Jenna told Priya who told Marcus who told my brother who told me."
"Ah."
"Um." Kai pushed his hair out of his eyes. "I wanted to help. If you'll have me."
Amara blinked at him.
"You want to help?" Amara said.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Kai looked surprised by the question. "Because I love that library."
"Oh."
"I go there on Saturdays with my grandmother. She likes the big print books. I've been going since I was four." He shrugged, his shoulders going up very high and then dropping. "And Ms. Abebe once remembered my name after only meeting me once. That counts for something."
It did, Amara thought. It counted for a lot.
"I have an idea," Kai said. "It's probably a weird idea. I just — I wanted to tell you."
"Okay."
"Not here."
"Okay."
"After school. At the library. If that's all right."
"Yeah," said Amara. "That's all right."

So on Wednesday after school, four of them sat in the pumpkin chair corner.
Amara in the pumpkin chair. Jenna cross-legged on the carpet with her homework spread around her as if to pretend, if anyone asked, that she was doing homework. Omar had come too, because he had a half-day from his middle school and had taken the bus over. And Kai, sitting very straight on a little wooden stool, with his brown jacket zipped up to his chin.
"Okay," Jenna said. "Kai. You wanted to tell us something."
"Yes," said Kai.
He was blushing a little. Amara had not seen him blush before. But he pressed on.
"So. I've been thinking about — about what you guys are trying to do. Save the library. And I agree we should try. But I was thinking about *why* they want to close it, and what we could say that would change their minds."
"Yes," said Amara. "We were thinking about that too."
"And I — I don't think just saying 'please don't' is going to work."
"No," Omar admitted. "Probably not."
"So I think we have to give them something instead."
"Like what?"
Kai looked down at his hands. They were small hands, clean, and he held them folded in his lap like he was in church.
"Like a new idea for what the library could be. Not just — not just a library that's barely getting by. But a library that's doing *more.* So that they'd be dumb to close it."
"Doing more how?" Jenna said.
"That's the thing I've been thinking about," Kai said. "Um. Okay. I'll just say it." He took a breath. "What if we made it a *Peace Library?*"
Nobody said anything.
A bee, which had found its way inside and seemed content to make its home by the window, buzzed against the glass.
"A what?" said Omar.
"A Peace Library. I don't know if that's what we'd call it. That's just what I've been calling it in my head."
"What does that mean?" said Amara.
Kai rubbed the back of his neck. "Okay, so. Libraries used to be more than places for books. Like, a long time ago. They were where people came to have conversations. They were community centers. People met there and read the newspapers together and talked about — about what was happening in their town, and how they should deal with it." He paused. "My grandmother told me about a library in Hiroshima she went to as a little girl. After the war. She said the library was the first thing people rebuilt. Not a school. Not a store. A library. Because the library was where they went to figure out who they were going to be next."
The bee bumped the window. Stopped. Bumped it again.
"Okay," Amara said. "Keep going."
"So what if our library wasn't just where people came to get books?" Kai said. "What if it was also where people came to learn how to — how to talk to each other. Especially about hard stuff. How to consult about things that matter. How to solve problems. How to argue and still like each other afterward."
"Consult?" Jenna said.
"Consultation," Kai said. "It's — I looked it up. It's a way of talking about things in a group. Where everyone gets a voice and people listen really carefully and nobody is trying to win. You just try to find the best idea together. Different cultures have different names for it, but it's kind of a universal thing."
Amara had sat up straight in the pumpkin chair.
"My aunt knows about this," she said. "She does it. Back in Sudan. They had something like it."
"Lots of places do," Kai said. "That's what I mean. It's something humans have been doing forever. It's just — we kind of forgot."
Omar rubbed his chin. "So you're saying, make the library a place where people come to *do* that."
"Yes."
"Not instead of the books."
"No! Keep the books. Keep the storytimes. Keep Ms. Abebe. Keep everything. But *add* this. Make it something more useful, not less useful. A place that solves problems for people. A place where neighbors who are fighting can come and talk it out. A place where kids can come and learn these skills. A place where city council meetings could even happen, for things that affect the neighborhood."
"Whoa," said Jenna.
"I know," said Kai. "It's a lot. I just — I think grown-ups are more likely to save a thing that's doing something extra. Something nobody else is doing. If we just say 'please keep this small library open because we like it,' they'll pat our heads. But if we say, 'the library is going to become a Peace Library and here's what it will do,' they might listen."
Amara realized she had been holding her breath.
She had not expected Kai Nakashima, sitting-at-a-different-desk-every-day Kai Nakashima, to walk into her life and say something like that.
"Kai," she said.
"Yeah?"
"That's the idea."
"Really?"
"That's the one."
"You think so?"
"It's bigger than just saving the library," Jenna said slowly. "It's — it's rebuilding it."
"Like Hiroshima," Omar said, quietly.
"Not like Hiroshima," Kai said, smiling faintly. "That was a bad example. That was a disaster."
"Okay, but the *spirit.*"
"The spirit," Kai agreed. "Yes."
Amara was thinking fast. "We'd have to know a lot more about it, though. About consultation. About how it actually works. We can't just say it. We have to *mean* it."
"Yes," said Kai.
"So we have to learn."
"Yes."
"Where do we learn?"
Kai smiled, and for the first time since Amara had known him, it was not a small, careful smile. It was a whole, wide, proud smile.
"The library," he said.
And from around the nonfiction corner, there was the sound of Ms. Abebe softly, gently laughing — as though she had been listening the whole time. Which she had.
"Come with me, children," said Ms. Abebe. "I have a few books I think you'd like."

Ms. Abebe led them to a high shelf near the back of the library, in the section labeled 303 on the Dewey Decimal System, which Amara remembered had something to do with social science. She took down three books.
"This one," Ms. Abebe said, handing it to Kai. "About the Iroquois Confederacy. About how the Haudenosaunee people made decisions together — how the Great Law of Peace worked. Very beautiful."
"Thanks."
"And this one." She handed it to Omar. "About the Quakers. A religious group. They make decisions by something called *consensus.* They sit together in silence and then they speak. They believe there is a kind of wisdom that only shows up when everyone listens first."
"Cool."
Amara took the book. It was soft in her hands.
"Ms. Abebe," she said. "Why do you have all these books?"
Ms. Abebe smiled her wide crinkled smile. "Because I am a librarian, Amara. I have all kinds of books. I have books I love and books I disagree with and books I have never opened. But I know where each of them lives."
"Have *you* read these?"
"All of them. Yes."
"What do you think about consultation?"
Ms. Abebe considered. She was, Amara thought, a person who considered things before she spoke. It was one of the reasons her answers, when they came, were worth waiting for.
"I think," Ms. Abebe said, "that human beings are always trying to figure out how to live together. Every generation tries. Most of them do not succeed very well. My country — Ethiopia — has done it well, sometimes. Badly, other times. I have seen both. I have seen elders sit in a circle for many hours until a solution was found. I have seen whole families refuse to speak because of what someone's grandfather did. I have seen both. So. I think consultation is a thing that *works,* Amara, when people are willing to really do it. And I think it is one of the things the world is most hungry for. That is what I think."
Amara held the blue book with the care a person used holding a baby bird.
"Can we come every day after school," she said, "and read and talk about what we learn?"
"Of course."
"Can you help us?"
"Oh, children," Ms. Abebe said, and for a moment her eyes were very shiny. "I cannot think of anything I would rather do."

They started a Reading Circle.
That was what Amara called it. She wrote REARDING CIRCLE on a piece of paper and then fixed the spelling and taped it to the little round table by the window. Every day after school, she and Jenna and Kai met there, and when Omar could come on his half-days he did too. They read, and they took notes, and they talked.
Ms. Abebe brought out more books. She brought out pamphlets. She brought out, once, an old cassette tape with a recording of a conversation from the nineteen-seventies, and they listened to it on her ancient office tape player.
They learned about the Iroquois and the Quakers and the Bahá'í consultation. But they also learned about African *palaver huts* — gathering places where disputes were resolved by the whole community. They learned about Icelandic *Things,* where laws had been argued out for a thousand years. They learned about town meetings in New England. They learned about the twelve-step consultative model used by some indigenous Hawaiian communities. They learned, most importantly, that this thing was not new.
*This thing,* Amara wrote in her purple notebook, *is as old as people.*
And then, one afternoon, she came home from the library and found Aunt Nyalong at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee.
"Auntie," Amara said. "Tell me about what you did in Sudan. When people had problems."
Aunt Nyalong looked up from her coffee.
"What made you ask that, *nyalual*?" She used the Dinka word for *little daughter,* which was her name for Amara sometimes.
"We are learning about consultation. At the library. Me and Jenna and Kai."
"Ah."
"I want to know what you did."
"In my village — this was before the war came — we had a kind of meeting. It was called, in our way, the *luak.* The cattle byre. Because often we met there, where it was cool. A man had a problem with his neighbor. A woman had a problem with her husband. A dispute about land. The elders would come. But not just elders. Young men and young women also. Children sometimes. Everyone could speak, if they had something to say, if they were willing to say it with respect."
"Did it always work?"
"No," said Aunt Nyalong. "Sometimes people went away still angry. Sometimes nothing was decided. But often, *nyalual,* it did work. People were calmer. They had been listened to. Even if they did not get their way, they had been *heard.* And that is a medicine, Amara. Being heard is a medicine."
Amara wrote that down, too.
"Auntie," she said. "Did you do this in the camps? After you had to leave?"
"In the refugee camp?"
"Yes."
Aunt Nyalong took a long breath.
"Yes," she said. "We did. In the camp there were so many problems. Food. Water. Who got to sleep where. Children who had lost their mothers. Mothers who had lost their children. Men with their anger, always their anger. And we made circles, *nyalual.* We made circles. Some people said it did no good but we made them anyway. And slowly — slowly — some of the anger got put down. Not all of it. Some of it is still in me even now. But some of it got put down. In the circles."
Amara looked at her aunt and saw her, for a moment, not as her aunt but as a younger woman, in a place Amara had never been, sitting in a circle with other women, and making a kind of medicine with words.
"Auntie," Amara said. "We want to bring that to our library."
Aunt Nyalong smiled. Her smile was slow.
"Yes," she said. "I heard."
"You heard?"
"Ms. Abebe called. She and I have become friends since you started running around that library so much. She called to tell me what you children have been reading. And she asked if I might come sometime. And tell my story. And I said yes."
"Auntie!"
"Of course yes. What else would I say?"
Amara went around the table and hugged her aunt, who smelled of coffee and cardamom and the lavender soap she always used. Aunt Nyalong held her tight.
"We are going to make something," Amara said into her aunt's shoulder. "We are going to make a place where this can happen here. Where our neighborhood can do it. Where people can come and learn."
"That is a beautiful thing, *nyalual.*"
"Do you think it will work?"
"It might. It might not." Aunt Nyalong pulled back and looked her niece in the face. "But you must try, regardless. The trying is not wasted, even if the thing fails. Do you hear me?"
"Yes, Auntie."
"The trying is not wasted."

Later that night, Amara opened the blue book again, the one Ms. Abebe had given her. She read by the light of her desk lamp, with the quilt over her knees.
There was a passage she had marked with a folded corner.
*In consultation, the participants enter with a shared desire for truth, rather than a desire to win. Each person offers their best thinking, and once offered, the idea no longer belongs to them but to the group. It can be examined, questioned, and even discarded without insult to the person who raised it.*
Amara thought about Jenna's angry-thinking face. She thought about Omar, who always wanted to be right. She thought about herself — about her own tendency, when a thing mattered to her, to hold onto it like it was her own child, to defend it until her knuckles were white.
*The idea no longer belongs to them.*
She underlined it, lightly, in pencil.
Something about it felt like it mattered a lot. It felt like a small door into a very big room.
She turned out the light. She lay in the dark listening to the street sounds of her neighborhood. Somewhere down the block a dog barked twice and then stopped. Somewhere above her, through the ceiling, Mrs. Beecham played her classical music a little too loud.
*Being heard is a medicine,* her aunt had said.
Amara fell asleep thinking about all the people in her neighborhood who had not yet been heard.

There were many afternoons at the library that were nothing like meetings or proposals or campaigns. They were just afternoons. Amara liked to remember those too.
One was a Thursday in the second week of March. The rain had been falling on and off for three days. Amara had come straight from school, her backpack soaked, her hair in wet clumps against her neck. She had pushed through the heavy glass door and the warm yellow air of the library had wrapped around her like a towel.
Ms. Abebe had looked up from the front desk.
"*Wullige,*" she had said. "You are a drowned mouse."
"I forgot my umbrella."
"I have a spare towel. In the cupboard. Go and get it."
Amara had dried her hair. She had squelched across the carpet to the pumpkin chair and squeezed water out of her socks onto a piece of newspaper. Then she had sat down and started reading. The book she was reading was one of the ones about consultation, a slim book with a red cover that described how Quakers made decisions in their meetings. Amara liked the word *meeting* better than most words she had been meeting lately. It sounded quiet. It sounded small. It sounded like something a person might actually do.
After a while, a small boy had come over to her. He was maybe six or seven. He had black curly hair and a face that was mostly eyes.
"Are you a big kid?" the boy had said.
"I'm eleven."
"That's big."
"Kind of."
"Will you read to me?"
"Oh. Um. Sure. What book?"
The boy had held up a copy of *Where the Wild Things Are.* Amara had read it, very quietly, with the boy pressed against her arm and the rain ticking against the big west windows. She had done the monster voices in a soft low rumble. The boy had giggled. She had read it again when he asked, and then a third time when he asked again, and by the third time she had noticed that Ms. Abebe was standing behind the nonfiction shelf watching them, and that Ms. Abebe's eyes were the soft kind of shiny they got when she was trying not to have feelings in public.
That was not a campaign memory. That was not a proposal memory. That was just a library memory. Just a rainy afternoon. Just a boy who wanted to hear about Max and the monsters. Just a pumpkin chair and a damp pair of socks on the newspaper.
Amara thought, sometimes, that the reason she loved the library so much — the reason she wanted it saved — was that it contained a thousand of these moments. Not the big memorable ones, not the dramatic ones. The small ones. The unremarkable ones. The wet-sock ones. The *will-you-read-to-me* ones. These were what a neighborhood was made of. Not the meetings. Not the speeches. The thousand unremarkable moments.
She wrote this down, once, in her notebook, during a Reading Circle afternoon. *A neighborhood is made of a thousand small moments,* she wrote. And then she drew a little bracket around it. And then, below it, she wrote, *A Peace Library would give us more of those.*
Kai, sitting across from her, had leaned over and read it upside down. He had nodded.
"That's a good sentence," he had said.
"Yeah?"
"Put it in the proposal."
"Maybe."
She had, in the end. It had gone on page four.

Another afternoon, in late March, Amara had been shelving books as a small thank-you to Ms. Abebe. Ms. Abebe had shown her how to use the Dewey Decimal system properly, and Amara had been patient and particular about it. She liked the tidy logic. She liked that every book had a home. She liked that if you put it back right, the next person could find it. It was a kind of small justice that books had. A kind of caring for the next reader. A kind of love across time.
She had been sorting a cart of nonfiction in the 300s — the social sciences — when she came across a book that had been mis-shelved by someone else. It was a book about listening. Not just listening to conversations. Listening to the world. Listening to the ground. Listening to plants. Listening to the sounds cities made. Listening to the silences inside yourself.
Amara had taken the book over to the pumpkin chair and opened it.
There was a chapter called *How to Listen to Someone You Do Not Agree With.*
Amara had read it twice. It was by a man who had spent his career in peace and conflict resolution, in places like Northern Ireland and South Africa and Sri Lanka. He wrote, very simply, about the three things he had learned about listening.
Amara had copied these three things into her notebook. She had tried the third one that night at dinner, when her father had mentioned he did not think she should join the book club at the middle school next year because it met at an hour that would make her walk home alone in the dark.
"Okay, Dad," Amara had said, carefully. "Just so I understand. You're worried about me walking home alone in the dark. Because it's not safe."
Her father had blinked at her.
"Yes," he had said. "That is — yes. What I am worried about."
"Okay. That makes sense."
"What?"
"I said, that makes sense."
Her father had stared at her for a full five seconds.
"Amara," he had said, finally, "where did you learn to talk like this?"
"A book at the library."
Her father had shaken his head. He had laughed. He had reached across and put his hand on her cheek.
"*My daughter,*" he had said. "The libraries have raised you. That is what has happened."
"Yeah, Dad. Basically."
They had laughed together about that. And then they had worked out — the two of them, together — a plan where Amara could join the book club next year, but her father or Aunt Nyalong would pick her up from it, until the days got long enough that she could walk home safely on her own. It was a compromise. It was not exactly what either of them had wanted. But it was a solution they had found together.
Amara had put a star next to the three listening rules when she got home that night.
*It works,* she had written underneath. *With Dad, anyway.*

And one more. One more afternoon. This one late in April, a few days after the council vote, when the news was still fresh and the neighborhood was still in a state of quiet delight.
Amara had been sitting at a table with Kai, working on a thank-you card for Ms. Abebe. They were drawing careful pictures on the front — a library, an oak tree, four little figures holding hands.
"Kai," Amara had said, looking up. "Can I ask you something?"
"Yeah."
"That day at recess. When you came up to me. And said you had an idea."
"Yeah."
"Why me?"
Kai had put down his pencil. He had thought about the question seriously for a moment, the way he thought about most questions.
"Because," he had said, "you were the kind of person who puts up flyers."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean — there are kids who have ideas, and there are kids who *do* things. Sometimes they are the same kid. But not always. I am a kid who has ideas. I'm not usually the kid who does things. I'm too shy, and too quiet, and I — I get stuck. But you put up flyers. That Monday, when you had the letter in your hand, I could see that you were going to do something. And I thought, okay. That's who I'll tell. She'll do something with it."
"Oh."
"Is that okay to say?"
"Yeah, Kai. That's okay."
Kai had picked up his pencil again. He had gone back to shading in the oak tree.
Amara had thought about that for a long time afterward.
Some people had ideas. Some people did things. Sometimes it was the same person. But not always. And a neighborhood — a good neighborhood — was one where the people who had ideas could find the people who did things, and the people who did things could find the people who had ideas, and the two could talk to each other and make something that neither of them could have made alone.
A library, Amara thought, was a very good place for that kind of finding.
It occurred to her that this was maybe one of the oldest and most useful things libraries did. They gathered ideas in one place. Between covers. On shelves. In the heads of the people who came. And then they let the ideas find, slowly, patiently, across the long years, the people who were going to do things with them.
A Peace Library would just do this on purpose.
Which was, in the end, maybe why it felt so right.

It was Jenna who first noticed the flyer.
On Monday after school, Jenna came running into the library with her braids bouncing.
"Amara!"
"Shhh."
"Amara, the flyer on the telephone pole by the bakery — somebody *wrote* on it."
"Wrote what?"
"Come see."
*DON'T MESS WITH THE LIBRARY. LEAVE IT ALONE.*
Amara stared at it. Her chest felt hot.
"Who would *do* that?" Jenna said.
"I don't know."
"It's so rude."
"I know."
"Should we take it down and put up a new one?"
Amara considered. A bus sighed at the corner. A woman walked past them with a white dog.
"No," she said, finally. "Leave it up. I want to know who did it."
They stood there for a while. The ink was blue ballpoint. The handwriting was blocky and slightly shaky, the kind of handwriting that belonged to someone older, someone who had learned to write at a desk with an inkwell and had never unlearned the habit of pressing hard.
Amara began to have a suspicion.
"Come with me," she said.
She led Jenna down the block, past the bakery, past the dry cleaners (there was Mr. Polanski's gray coat, hanging as always in the window), around the corner to Elm Street. Three doors down, on the right, was a tidy little green house with a front porch and a porch light with a brass surround and a small American flag drooping a bit on its pole.
A man was sitting on the porch. He was in a white undershirt and gray slacks and had a newspaper on his lap and a mug of coffee beside him on the little round table, and he looked up when the girls approached the gate.
"Hi, Mr. Polanski," Amara said.
"Hi, Amara." His voice was gruff. It was always gruff. Mr. Polanski had been the neighborhood grouch for as long as Amara had known him, which was pretty much her whole life. He had once yelled at her and Jenna for running in their neighborhood park when they were eight and had "scared the darn pigeons out of their feeding." He had yelled at Omar last year for riding his bike on the sidewalk, and yelled at the kids from the apartments for playing music too loud out of a car, and yelled at the garbage men for dropping the cans wrong. Mr. Polanski had a lot of yell in him.
But he had also, once, shoveled Aunt Nyalong's car out of three feet of snow while she was at work, and refused to take any money for it.
"Mr. Polanski," Amara said. "Did you write on our flyer?"
Mr. Polanski's eyebrows went up.
"What flyer?"
"The yellow one. On the pole by the bakery."
"Which yellow one?"
"About the library."
Mr. Polanski took a long sip of his coffee.
"Yes," he said, finally. "I wrote on your flyer."
"Why?"
"Because I don't like what you're doing."
Amara felt her face get warm. Jenna was standing very still beside her, her braid-ends gripped in her fists.
"We're trying to *save* the library," Amara said. "How is that bad?"
"You're not just trying to save it, are you? I read the little part at the bottom. *Imagine something new.* No thank you, miss. I don't want something new. I want the thing we have. That's a library. It has books. It has a lady with reading glasses who goes *shhh.* It has story time on Saturdays. I don't need it to be *imagined* into anything else. My grandkids don't need it to be imagined into anything else. Leave the library *alone.*"
He did not yell. But there was a tight edge in his voice that was almost worse than yelling. His mouth was a thin line.
Amara opened her mouth to argue.
But Jenna, who had more sense sometimes than anybody, touched Amara's elbow.
"Okay, Mr. Polanski," Jenna said. "Thanks for telling us."
"*Thanks* for telling you?"
"Yeah. Thanks. Bye."
Jenna tugged Amara away from the gate. They walked back down the block. Amara was sputtering.
"He wrote on our flyer, Jenna! He wrote all over it! With a pen!"
"I know."
"And he doesn't even *know* what we're doing. He just — he just —"
"I know."
"I want to write back on the flyer. With a pen. I want to write something back."
"Yeah," said Jenna. "I know you do. But don't."
Amara made a frustrated sound.
"Why are you being so calm?"
"Because," Jenna said, "he's probably not the only one. Right? If he thought that, other people will too. And we need to know about it. We need to know what people are afraid of. If all we do is yell back at them, we won't learn anything."
Amara took this in. She did not love it.
"I hate that," she said.
"I know."
"I hate that you're right."
"I know."
They walked the rest of the way to Amara's apartment in a sulky, tired silence.

Amara told her father about it that evening, just before he left for his shift. He was at the kitchen sink washing out his lunch container and his hair was still damp from his shower.
"A neighbor?" her father said. "Writing on the flyer?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"He said he doesn't want anything new. He said *leave the library alone.*"
Her father turned off the water. He dried his hands slowly on the kitchen towel. He came to sit across from her at the table. He looked at her with his brown eyes, tired as always, but focused, the way he focused on a patient or on her.
"Amara," he said. "What are you going to do about it?"
"I don't know. I wanted to — I wanted to write back on his flyer."
Her father smiled a small smile.
"That would be satisfying for a minute."
"Yes."
"And then what?"
"He would hate us more."
"Yes."
"And other people would hate us."
"Maybe."
"And the flyer would just be — a fight between me and him. In ink."
"Yes."
Amara poked her fork at a bit of rice on her plate.
"Dad," she said. "What should I do?"
"Don't push past him, Amara. Listen to him. Find out why."
"I know *why.* He said. He wants it to stay the same."
"No," her father said. "He told you *what.* Not why."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, my daughter, when a person is angry, the anger is usually not the thing itself. The anger is usually something else. Something they can't say. Something they don't even know. You go and listen. Not to argue. To hear. Maybe he will tell you what is really there. Maybe he will not. But if you argue, he will tell you nothing. If you listen, he might."
Amara pushed her rice around.
"Also," her father said, "he is our neighbor, Amara. He shovels our walk. He is our neighbor. This matters."
"I know."
"So listen first. Then decide."
Her father kissed the top of her head. He picked up his bag. He left for his shift.
Amara sat at the table a long time after the door shut behind him.
She thought about what her father had said. She thought about the flyer on the pole and the words in blue ink. She thought about Mr. Polanski's porch and the newspaper on his lap and the American flag and the way his mouth had been a thin line.
She thought about Kai's Peace Library, and about how easy it was to imagine a beautiful place where grown-ups sat in circles and talked about their problems — and how hard it was to imagine making that place with a real live grouchy neighbor who wrote mean things on your flyers.
*Being heard is a medicine,* Aunt Nyalong had said.
Well, Amara thought. Here was a chance to test the medicine.

On Saturday morning Amara made tea.
Aunt Nyalong showed her how to do it properly. You did not just put a bag in hot water. You boiled the water in a saucepan, and you added cardamom pods and a cinnamon stick and fresh ginger, and then you added the tea leaves, and then you added milk, and then you let it come back up to a simmer, and then you strained it into a small thermos and you did not forget the sugar.
"Take him sugar in a separate little jar," Aunt Nyalong said, "because maybe he does not take sugar. A polite person asks."
"Yes, Auntie."
"And something sweet to eat. Not too much. Just a small offering."
"Yes, Auntie."
"And you do not go for an answer, Amara. You go to listen. If you come back with no answer, that is fine. The tea is not a trick. The tea is a tea."
"Yes, Auntie."
Aunt Nyalong packed it all into a little cloth bag. She kissed the top of Amara's head. She waved from the window as Amara walked down the block.
It was a bright, cold Saturday. The sky was the color of a robin's egg. Amara's breath made little white puffs. She walked with the cloth bag held carefully in both hands so that the thermos would not bump against the jar of sugar.
She turned the corner onto Elm Street. She counted the houses. Three doors down. Green house. Porch with the flag.
Mr. Polanski was sitting on the porch again, in a heavier jacket this time, with a blanket over his lap and his newspaper open and a mug of coffee beside him.
He looked up as she came through the gate. His eyebrows came together.
"Amara Deng."
"Hi, Mr. Polanski."
"What's that you got."
"Tea," said Amara. "I brought you tea. And some cookies. My aunt made them."
"You brought me *tea.*"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because," said Amara, "my father said I should come and listen to you. And I thought if we were going to listen, we should have something to drink while we did it."
Mr. Polanski stared at her for a long moment.
Amara's heart was beating very fast. She was not, she was surprised to realize, afraid. She was a little afraid. But mostly she was focused. Focused the way a person was focused when they were doing something important for the first time.
"Well," Mr. Polanski said, finally. "Come up on the porch, then. I guess."
Amara climbed the three porch steps. Mr. Polanski pointed to the other chair, which was a metal folding chair, and Amara set her cloth bag on the little table between them and began unpacking. The thermos of tea. The jar of sugar. The small plastic container of Aunt Nyalong's fresh-baked kolo, which was roasted barley with a little spice, and a couple of her coconut cookies, just in case Mr. Polanski did not care for kolo.
Mr. Polanski watched. He did not help. But he also did not stop her.
"I got milk in my coffee already," he said.
"The tea has milk."
"Hm."
"And sugar. Or no sugar. Whichever you want."
"Two sugars."
Amara spooned two heaps of sugar into his mug, which he had emptied. She poured tea from the thermos. She stirred. She handed him the mug. She poured a second mug for herself, from a second mug she had brought in the cloth bag.
Mr. Polanski took a careful sip.
"Hm," he said. "That's tea."
"Yes."
"Where are you from, again?"
"Sudan."
"That a country?"
"Yes."
"I knew a Sudanese guy. Worked the ladder truck with me for a year in eighty-nine. Big fella. Called him Tiny."
"That's funny."
"It was funny."
They sipped. The porch was cold, but the tea was hot, and after a minute it started to feel not so cold.
Amara thought about what to say. She had come to listen. But to listen, you sometimes had to say something first. You had to open a door. That was what the book had said — one of the books, the one about consultation. *An invitation, offered gently, opens a space.*
"Mr. Polanski," she said, "you said you don't want the library to change. Can you tell me more about that?"
Mr. Polanski looked out toward the street.
He did not answer right away.
Amara waited.
She had practiced waiting. She was still bad at it. But she was practicing.
"My wife used to take our granddaughter there every Saturday."
"Oh."
"Story time at ten. They'd go to story time, they'd pick out books, they'd come home with stacks of books. My wife — her name was Linda — she loved that library more than any place in town. She was a reader. I'm not. But she was."
"Oh."
"She died in twenty-twenty-one. Cancer. Quick, which was a mercy. Not quick enough that she didn't suffer, but quick."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Polanski."
"Me too."
He took another sip of tea. His hands, Amara saw, were trembling a little. Old-man hands. Big knuckles.
"That library," Mr. Polanski said slowly, "is one of the last places in this town that still feels like *her.* You go in. The smell is the same. The lady behind the desk is even the same — Abebe, right? Been there forever. The big windows are the same. The kids' nook is the same. I don't go in often. I'm not a reader, like I said. But I walk past it. Every day on my way to the diner, I walk past it. And I look in. And I see my granddaughter picking out a book with her grandma. Even though she's in college now, and my wife's been gone four years, I see them. I don't know how else to say it. I just do."
Amara did not say anything.
She sat very still. She held her warm mug. She did not want to miss what he was saying.
"So when you put up your flyer," Mr. Polanski went on, "saying you want to *imagine something new* in that place — I'll be honest, miss. It made me mad. Because that place is not — that place is not just a building to me. That place is my wife. And if you change it, if you make it into some kind of — I don't know — some kind of center for talking, some kind of community living room, my wife is not going to be in it anymore. Do you understand?"
Amara nodded slowly.
"I think I do," she said.
"And I don't know you kids. You mean well. I can see you mean well. But you don't know what it is to walk past a place every day for four years and look in and see the back of your wife's head."
"No," Amara said. "I don't."
"So when I wrote on your flyer, I was being a jerk. But there was — there was a reason. Whether it was a good reason or not, I don't know. But there was a reason."
"Mr. Polanski," Amara said, very quietly, "I am sorry about your wife."
"Thank you."
"I am sorry I made you feel like your wife would not be in the library anymore."
"Huh."
"I did not know. I did not mean to."
"I know you didn't."
They sat in the quiet for a while. A car went past. A sparrow landed on the porch railing and hopped twice and flew away.
"Mr. Polanski," Amara said. "Can I tell you about my mother?"
"Your mother?"
"My mother died when I was two. I don't remember her. She died in Sudan, before we came to America. When I was a baby, we got separated from her for — for complicated reasons. She got sick in a camp. She died before we could be together again."
Mr. Polanski turned to look at her. His face was different now. It had gone soft in a way she had not seen.
"I'm sorry, Amara."
"Thank you."
"That's a terrible thing."
"Yes."
"Does your dad talk about her?"
"Sometimes. My aunt talks about her more. My aunt was her sister-in-law, but they were very close. My aunt keeps my mother alive for me, a little."
"How does she do that?"
"Stories. Little things. She'll say, *your mother used to laugh like this,* and she'll do the laugh. Or, *your mother used to hum this song when she washed dishes,* and she hums it. So I know my mother a little. Through my aunt's hum."
Mr. Polanski took a long, long breath. He set down his mug. He looked out at the street.
"Huh," he said.
That was all he said for a while.
"Your aunt sounds like a wise woman."
"She is."
"Huh."
They sipped their tea.
"Okay."
"I'll come to your meeting. The one on the flyer. I'll come and I'll hear you out."
"Okay."
"I'm not promising anything."
"Okay."
"But I'll come."
"Thank you."
He nodded. He drank more tea.
"This is good tea," he said, gruffly. "Tell your aunt."
"I will."
She stayed another twenty minutes. They did not talk about the library anymore. They talked about Mr. Polanski's time as a firefighter — about a rescue he had done, forty years ago, of a cat in a tree, which was the kind of thing firefighters were not supposed to do but which he had done because the little girl on the sidewalk had been crying. Amara laughed. Mr. Polanski laughed, a rusty, dry laugh like something old coming back to life.
When she walked home, her cloth bag was empty except for the two mugs and the sugar jar.
She walked slowly. She was thinking.
*Being heard is a medicine.*
She had not given him a medicine. She had just been still with him for forty minutes, while he had talked about a thing he missed.
But maybe. Maybe that counted.
Maybe that was the medicine.

The Saturday of the neighborhood meeting, it rained.
Not the gentle kind of rain, either. The big, sideways, how-are-we-going-to-get-anywhere kind of rain. It hammered on the roof of the library at ten o'clock when Amara and Omar and Jenna and Kai got there to set up. It sheeted down the big west windows like a waterfall. It made the oak tree out front bow and jerk in the wind.
"This is bad," Omar said, looking out. "Nobody's going to come."
"They'll come," Amara said, with more confidence than she felt.
"I mean it's *really* raining."
"They'll come."
Ms. Abebe was there. She had made coffee in the big urn they used for the knitting club. She had put out the folding chairs in the reading area, forty of them in rows, which Omar had thought was too many and which Ms. Abebe had insisted was right. She had put out cookies from the bakery down the block, which had donated them — the owner, Mr. Franklin, had waved off Omar's money and said, *"For saving our library? On the house, buddy. On the house."*
Aunt Nyalong came. Amara's father came, straight from his night shift, with his eyes red and his hair still damp from the rain. Jenna's mother had said she would come if she could but that there was a scheduling conflict, which Jenna had related to Amara with a careful, flat voice that Amara recognized.
By ten forty-five, the forty chairs had eleven people in them.
By eleven, it was twenty-two.
By eleven-fifteen, almost every chair was full.
They had come. In raincoats and hoods and plastic ponchos and one man with a black umbrella as big as a tent. They had come dripping. They had come with their kids. They had come — some of them — because they had read the flyer, and some of them because a neighbor had dragged them, and some of them because they had used the library for thirty years and could not picture the block without it.
Mr. Polanski came. He sat in the back row. He nodded once at Amara when he caught her eye, and then did not look at her again. He was dressed up — he had on a brown corduroy jacket over his undershirt — and he looked clean and combed and uncomfortable.
And at the very end, just before Amara was going to start, the glass door jingled and Jenna's mother Daniela Morales stepped in.
Jenna's mother was a tall woman with sleek black hair pulled back into a low bun. She was wearing a black raincoat and she shook the water off it and hung it on one of the hooks by the door. She did not sit in the front. She sat in the third-to-last row, by herself, and took out a small notebook and a pen.
Jenna, standing by the window, saw her. Her eyes got big. Then they got narrow, in that way Amara was used to.
"She came," Jenna whispered to Amara.
"Yes."
"I didn't think she would."
"Me either."
"What do I do?"
"Just — just be great, Jen. Just do your part."
Jenna nodded. She squared her shoulders.
Amara took a breath and went to stand at the front.
She had practiced her opening in the bathroom mirror for a week. She had practiced it in front of Aunt Nyalong. She had practiced it in the shower where nobody could hear her. She had practiced it so many times that when she opened her mouth, the words came out almost by themselves.
"Hi, everyone. Thank you for coming out in the rain. I'm Amara Deng. I'm eleven. I've been coming to this library since I was five. My favorite chair is the pumpkin chair over there in the corner. My favorite book section is the folktales, section three-ninety-eight point two, which is where Ms. Abebe once found me a book about an Ethiopian princess that I kept checking out for a whole year. Ms. Abebe has known me since I was in kindergarten. She knows a lot of you, too."
A murmur of yes and mhm ran through the room.
"The city wants to close this library on June 30th," Amara said. "They say we don't have enough people using it. They say it costs too much. They say that we can just go to the other branches. But the other branches are not our branch. They are not in our neighborhood. They are not *home.*"
"That's right," said a voice near the front. It was Mrs. Kwame, Aunt Nyalong's neighbor from across the hall. She had an enormous green hat on. She was nodding vigorously.
"We want to save this library," Amara went on. "But we don't want to just save it. We want to *change* it. Not change what it already is. But *add* to it."
She took a breath.
"My friend Kai is going to tell you what we're proposing."
She stepped aside. Kai stood up.
Kai, Amara thought, looked impossibly small up there. His brown jacket. His floppy hair. His quiet voice. But when he started speaking, his voice was bigger than she had known.
"I started going to this library when I was four," Kai said. "My grandmother used to bring me on Saturdays. She liked the big print books. She still does. My grandmother is right there, actually — *kon'nichiwa, Obaachan.*"
A small woman in the second row waved with both hands.
Kai smiled a shy smile.
"Libraries are more than books," Kai said. "Libraries are where communities come together. That's what they were in the old days, before the internet. That's what they've been in a lot of places around the world. They've been the places where people went to learn, yes, but also to *meet.* To talk. To solve problems. To build things together."
He paused.
"We're proposing that the Birchwood Branch stay open. But not just stay the same. We want it to become a *Peace Library.*"
He said the words very carefully, like each one was a little egg he was setting down.
"A Peace Library would still have all the books. All the storytimes. All the things we love. But it would add new things. A room for community consultation — where neighbors who are having disputes can come and talk, with a trained facilitator, and work things out without going to court or hating each other. A space for community meetings — like this one, but for all kinds of neighborhood decisions. Classes for people — kids and grown-ups — on how to listen, how to consult, how to resolve conflicts. A place where our neighborhood can come to learn to *talk* to each other better. Because we need that."
He cleared his throat.
"We think this would not just save the library. We think it would make it into something special. Something that other towns would want to copy. Something that could even save the city money in the long run — because problems that get solved small cost less than problems that get solved big. And we think our neighborhood, with all the different people in it, is exactly the kind of place that needs it."
A lot of people were nodding. Some were frowning. Some were staring, hard to read.
"Omar," Kai said. "The budget."
Omar stood up. He had a small laptop under his arm and he projected a few slides up onto the blank wall using a tiny portable projector he had borrowed from his school's maker space. He went through, quickly, the city's numbers and their counter-proposal. He showed a chart of how much the library cost now and how much it would cost with the new use — not much more, they were arguing, because a lot of the "Peace Library" work would be volunteer or run by partner nonprofits. He showed letters of interest from three local organizations that had already said they'd collaborate — a mediation nonprofit, a literacy group, a neighborhood association.
Amara watched Jenna's mother while Omar spoke. She was writing in her notebook. Not frowning. Not smiling. Just writing.
"And," Omar finished, "the door count has been going up for the last three months, not down. We checked. Ms. Abebe pulled the records. We think the city's numbers are based on older data. With the new programs, we'd expect it to go up even more."
He sat down.
Amara stood up again.
"We would like," she said, "to hear from you all. What you think. What questions you have. What worries. What hopes. My aunt, Nyalong Deng, is going to help facilitate. She's going to make sure everyone who wants to speak gets to speak."
She stepped aside. Aunt Nyalong stepped forward in her best yellow dress with the embroidered hem, and her yellow head-wrap, and her slow beautiful voice.
"Welcome, everyone," Aunt Nyalong said. "We are going to listen now. Raise your hand if you would like to speak. We are going to go in order. Keep your remarks short, please. Two minutes. Let us hear each other."
Hands went up.

The first hands were kind.
Mrs. Kwame, green hat, spoke first. She said the library was where she had practiced her English when she first came from Ghana. She said she had sat in the back, month after month, reading a children's book with a dictionary until the words became real to her. She said it was her second home.
An old man named Mr. Chavez said he had met his wife at the library in 1973, over the same book — they had both reached for the same *National Geographic* on the same Tuesday afternoon and had started talking, and had not really stopped talking, he said, until she died eight years ago, and that he still came to the library to sit in the chair she liked.
A woman with a baby strapped to her chest said the children's storytime had been, quote, her lifeline through the first six months of motherhood. She had cried into her coffee at it once. A grandma had patted her hand.
Amara, standing off to the side, felt her own heart going. She felt — she felt the room turning in her direction. She felt a warm and strong current running under all their words, a current she had not, she realized, ever been part of before, not like this, not at the front.
And then a man stood up in the fifth row.
He was wearing a gray windbreaker and a baseball cap pulled low. He had sharp, restless eyes.
"My name is Bill Harper," he said. "I live at 412 Cedar. I'm glad people love the library. I love the library. But I have a problem with this 'Peace Library' idea. A big problem."
The room went still.
"This *consultation* business," Mr. Harper said, making air quotes with his fingers. "*Dispute resolution.* *Community decision-making.* Let me tell you what that sounds like to me. That sounds like socialism."
Amara blinked.
A murmur moved through the room — a few angry murmurs, a few nervous ones.
"It sounds like a bunch of kids and a bunch of outside groups want to get their hooks into a public building and use it to push some kind of agenda. I don't want my tax dollars paying for that. I want a library. A plain old library. Books and librarians. Not a social-justice kindergarten. Thank you."
He sat down.
Aunt Nyalong, at the front, nodded calmly. "Thank you for speaking, Mr. Harper. Is there another hand?"
Another hand went up. A woman in her forties, trim gray hair, a tight mouth.
"Yes. Hello. I am a retired school principal. I agree with the gentleman. And I will add, no offense to these children — who are very articulate, bless them — but the idea that *children* should be running a public facility is —"
"They are not running it," Aunt Nyalong said, gently.
"They are *proposing* running it."
"They are proposing a new use. Ms. Abebe would still run the library. The new programming would be run by adult partner organizations. May I read again from the proposal?"
Amara watched her aunt. Her aunt was very calm. Her voice did not get louder. But she did not back up, either. She stood very still in her yellow dress and she looked the woman in the face and she waited.
"No," the woman said, after a moment. "I have read the proposal. I just think it is inappropriate for children to be taking on adult responsibilities. That's all. Thank you."
She sat down.
Then another man in the back stood up, but he was already speaking before Aunt Nyalong had recognized him, loud and sharp, and suddenly other voices were coming up too, people frustrated and half-rising, and the room was starting to tilt toward chaos.
Amara's stomach dropped.
She did not know what to do.
She looked at Kai. Kai looked at her. He was pale.
She looked at Jenna. Jenna's jaw was tight.
She looked at her aunt, who was holding up one large palm and asking, calmly, for the room to please wait.
And then — and then Aunt Nyalong did something Amara did not expect.
Aunt Nyalong did not raise her voice. She did not argue back. She stepped forward, took a breath, and began to speak.
"My name is Nyalong Deng," she said. "I am Amara's aunt. I am from a place called Tonj, in South Sudan. I am a refugee. I have been in this country for eleven years."
The room went quieter.
"I would like to tell you something. If you will let me. Just a few minutes."
She waited.
Nobody objected.
"When I was a young woman," Aunt Nyalong said, "my country fell into civil war. Not the first. The second. I was married. I had three children. My village was attacked. I lost my oldest son that night. He was nine. I lost my husband later, from an illness in the camps, because there was no medicine. I lost my house. I lost my books, which I loved. I lost the tree where my grandmother was buried. I lost almost everything."
She was not crying. She was standing very tall.
"We went to a camp. A refugee camp in Kenya. There were tens of thousands of people in this camp. People from different tribes who did not trust each other. People who had seen terrible things. Children who could not sleep. Women who could not stop crying. Men who were — *angry,* so angry, it came out of them like a smell."
Amara, standing to the side, realized she had never heard her aunt tell this story. Not like this. Not all of it at once. Aunt Nyalong had told her little pieces. But never this.
Amara felt tears on her own face and did not wipe them away.
"In this camp," Aunt Nyalong said, "the aid organizations brought us food. They brought us tents. They brought us medicine, when they could. But one thing they did not bring. One thing we had to bring for ourselves. *How to live with each other.* How to stop the fighting. How to keep from becoming, ourselves, the thing that had hurt us."
She paused.
"And we did a thing. Some of the women. Some of the older men. We made circles. We called them consultative circles. We sat, and one person spoke at a time, and another person listened, and we did not shout. We did not always agree. We did not always *like* each other. But we listened. And slowly, slowly, the camp became — not good, you understand. A camp is never good. But *possible.* The camp became possible. People slept a little better. Fights stopped in the early mornings. Children began to play again."
She took a long breath.
"I will tell you what consultation is not. Consultation is not socialism. It is not an agenda. It is not an ideology. It is not a political party. It is not the left. It is not the right. It is older than those words, and it does not care about them. Consultation is just — *people, sitting together, agreeing to listen.* That is all it is. I did it in my village as a girl. I did it in the camp as a woman. I did it in the offices of a nonprofit in Cleveland, where I worked for three years before I moved here. It is not a new thing. It is not a dangerous thing. It is, in fact, one of the oldest things human beings have ever invented. And, in my honest opinion as someone who has seen what happens without it, it is one of the few things that has any chance, at all, of saving any community anywhere from itself."
The room had gone very, very still.
"These children," Aunt Nyalong said, and she gestured to Amara and Kai and Omar and Jenna, "have read about it. They have studied it. They are proposing it to you. You do not have to agree. You can say no. You can vote no. You have every right. But please — please — do not say it is socialism. Because that word, when you use it that way, closes the door on a conversation that is almost as old as humanity. And this neighborhood, like any neighborhood, deserves that conversation. Please. That is all I ask."
She nodded once. She stepped back.
There was a long silence.
Then Mr. Chavez, the old man with the *National Geographic* story, began to clap. Slowly. Then Mrs. Kwame. Then Kai's grandmother. Then others. Not everyone. Not Mr. Harper. But enough.
Mr. Polanski, in the back row, sat very still with his hand on his chin.
Then he raised his hand.

Aunt Nyalong saw him.
"Yes, sir. In the back."
Mr. Polanski stood up slowly, like his knees were not in a hurry. He took off his corduroy jacket and folded it over his arm. Underneath he was wearing the white undershirt he always wore. He cleared his throat. He cleared it again.
"My name is Stan Polanski," he said. "I live on Elm Street. I retired from the Fairbridge Fire Department in two thousand and nine. Before that, I served twenty-eight years on Ladder Four."
The room was quiet. People were listening. Whether because they knew him, or because something in his voice had made them listen, Amara could not tell.
"I have lived on Elm Street since nineteen-seventy-nine. My wife Linda and I raised our daughter on that street. Our daughter grew up and moved out and gave us a granddaughter, Emily, who lived in Fairbridge until she went to college last fall. For most of Emily's life, her grandmother — my wife — took her to the Birchwood Branch every Saturday morning for story time. Every Saturday. Come rain or shine. They walked. I sometimes walked with them but I usually stayed home and read the paper. I am not much of a reader. My wife made up for it. She read. And she read."
He paused. He was looking at his shoes, not at the room.
"My wife died three and a half years ago. Cancer."
He took a long breath.
"Two weeks ago, this young lady —" he nodded toward Amara — "put up a flyer on the pole by the bakery about saving the library. And then the flyer said something about *imagining something new* at the library. And I was a real jerk about it. I got a pen, and I wrote *leave the library alone* across the front of the flyer. In the rain. I was a real jerk."
Amara, at the front of the room, had tears prickling in her eyes again.
"But here's the thing," Mr. Polanski said. "This young lady came to my porch. She brought me tea. She listened while I talked about my wife. I told her things I had not told anybody for three years. *Things* I had not said out loud. And she listened to all of it. She was eleven years old and she listened like a priest, I swear to God. Like — like somebody who knew how to listen."
He cleared his throat again. Amara realized he was trying not to cry.
"And I have been thinking about it ever since. I have been thinking about how a girl eleven years old — a kid — sat on my porch and did what most grown people in this town would not do. She listened to an old man about his dead wife. Without trying to fix it. Without trying to *move on.* Just — listening."
He looked up.
"And I realized something. I realized that whatever she has been reading about, whatever her aunt has been teaching her, is real. It works. I felt it. On my own porch. A kid did it to me. And I thought, if a kid can make a difference in an old man's morning by listening — imagine if a whole neighborhood could learn how. Imagine if we could all be taught. Imagine if people who had big problems — divorces, family feuds, neighbor lawsuits, church splits, I don't know what-all — had a place they could go where someone would sit and listen. Like that girl listened to me."
He took a breath.
"So I've been a cranky old jerk. I said the library should stay the same. I thought I was honoring my wife. But I've been thinking about what my wife would want, and you know what my wife would want?"
He smiled a small crooked smile.
"My wife would want the library to do whatever the kids on this block needed it to do. She was a children's librarian's wife's kind of woman, if you know what I mean. She would have loved these four kids. She would have been their first volunteer. She would have been their fifth, sixth, and seventh volunteer. She would have baked them cookies. She would have yelled at me for writing on their flyer."
A few people in the room laughed softly.
"Our library," Mr. Polanski said, looking around, "should be whatever our kids need it to be. Not what an old man needs it to be. Not what a widower needs it to be. What *they* need it to be. What our *future* needs it to be. I am on board. I change my vote. Count me in. And anyone who wants to write cranky things on their flyer, you talk to me about it first. I will set you straight."
He sat down.
The silence lasted about two full seconds.
Then Mrs. Kwame started clapping. Then Mr. Chavez. Then everyone. The whole room, or almost the whole room. Not Mr. Harper. But Mr. Harper, Amara noticed, was not frowning so hard anymore. He was looking at his hands.
Aunt Nyalong, at the front, bowed her head slightly to Mr. Polanski in a small elegant gesture, as one might acknowledge another elder in a circle.
Amara was crying in a steady, quiet way that she could not stop.
She was crying because of Mr. Polanski and his wife, whom she had never met but now felt that she knew a little. She was crying because she had not realized, until he stood up, how scared she had been that all this would come to nothing. She was crying because he had called her *a kid who listened like a priest,* which was the nicest thing anyone had ever said about her. She was crying because she felt, looking around at this room, at this wet, raincoated, cranky, warm, neighborly room, that something had *happened* here. Something had *happened.* And she didn't know what was going to come next. But she knew a thing had shifted.
Kai was beside her, quietly. He handed her a tissue from his jacket pocket. It was folded neat, the way Kai folded everything.
"Thanks," she whispered.
"You did it," he whispered back.
"We did it."
"Yeah."
At the back of the room, Jenna's mother Daniela Morales was still writing in her notebook.
But she was smiling, the slightest bit, at the corner of her mouth.

The meeting went on for another hour.
More people spoke. Most were in favor. A few were doubtful. One young man asked good detailed questions about zoning and insurance that Omar answered crisply. An older woman asked whether the Peace Library would have bilingual facilitators and Aunt Nyalong said, yes, absolutely, that was essential.
Mr. Harper did not speak again. But when the meeting ended and people were milling around the coffee urn, Amara saw him approach Kai and shake his hand, and she heard him say, gruffly, "You're a smart kid. I still don't love all of it. But I'll think about it."
"Thanks, sir," Kai said. "That's all I can ask."
Then Mr. Harper left.
Then, slowly, the room emptied. Raincoats were gathered up. Cookies were polished off. People hugged Ms. Abebe, who was wiping her eyes and laughing at the same time. Mrs. Kwame wrapped her arms around Aunt Nyalong for a long, long moment, the two of them swaying slightly.
Amara was folding up chairs when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
"Amara."
She turned. It was Jenna's mother.
"Hi, Ms. Morales."
"You did a wonderful job today."
"Thank you."
"All of you."
"Thank you."
Ms. Morales looked around the half-empty library. The rain had eased. Gray light was coming in the big window. Her face was tired, Amara saw, but something in her eyes was — was different from the eyes Jenna had been describing all month.
"Amara," Ms. Morales said quietly. "I want to tell you something. I did not bring this proposal into the committee. I voted for the closure because the money arguments were real. I still think the money arguments are real. But I did not know what this library was. Not really. I had not been in here in — in years. I had forgotten."
"Oh," Amara said.
"I am going to make no promises. The vote is the vote. There are other council members. There are politics I cannot explain to you. But I am going to go back to my colleagues and I am going to tell them what I saw in here today. I am going to tell them that this is not a closing library. This is an *opening* library. I will use those words. Those will be my words."
Amara nodded. She did not know what to say.
Jenna had come up behind her mother. She was standing a few steps back, not interrupting.
Ms. Morales turned.
"Jenna."
"Hi, Mom."
"You were excellent."
"Thanks."
"I am very proud of you."
"Even though we're kind of — on different sides?"
"Yes. Even though." Ms. Morales reached out and touched the end of one of Jenna's braids. "Especially *because.* Honey. Listen to me. When people are on different sides and they still love each other, that is called democracy. That is the whole thing. That is what we are supposed to be doing. All right? You and me. We are doing it right."
Jenna's eyes — Jenna's angry-thinking eyes — went very shiny very fast.
"Okay, Mom."
"Okay."
"Mom?"
"Yes."
"I love you."
"I love you, honey. Come here."
They hugged for a long time. Amara turned away to give them privacy. She went to help Ms. Abebe with the coffee urn, which needed to be emptied and cleaned.
She moved through the rest of the afternoon with a feeling inside her chest like a warm gold coin. She did not know what that coin was made of exactly. But it felt like something she had not had before.

The city council meeting was the first Tuesday of April.
Omar and Kai met her at the apartment. Omar had borrowed his father's tie, which was striped blue and maroon and a little too long for his neck. Kai had combed his floppy hair to the side and was wearing a button-down shirt under his brown jacket. They walked to City Hall together, the three of them, Aunt Nyalong keeping pace behind them in her good yellow dress.
Jenna met them at the corner of Main Street. She was in black pants and a white blouse and her braids were so carefully done they looked like polished rope.
"I'm going to throw up," Jenna whispered.
"Me too," Amara whispered back.
"We're fine," said Omar. "We're so fine."
"Are we?" said Kai.
"No," said Omar. "I'm lying."
They laughed, a nervous, brittle laugh. It made Amara feel a little better.
City Hall was not the same at night. The stone pillars were lit from below, which made them look like the pillars of a spaceship. The lobby was quieter. A security guard nodded them through without asking for IDs, because a cluster of other neighborhood people had also come — Mrs. Kwame, Mr. Chavez, Mr. Polanski in a jacket with a tie, Ms. Abebe herself in a long flowing dress with a necklace of amber beads. Even Kai's grandmother had come. She was holding Kai's grandfather's arm, and both of them were nodding at everyone they passed with enormous dignity.
The council chambers were set up like a courtroom. A long wooden bench at the front where the council members would sit. A podium facing them, for people who wanted to speak. Seats for the public at the back.
Amara sat. Her legs were shaking. She pressed her knees together.
The five council members filed in, including Jenna's mother, who did not look at Jenna directly but gave her a small, steady nod as she took her seat.
The chair of the council was a man named Mr. Abernathy, with a bald head and a white mustache and a no-nonsense manner. He banged a small wooden gavel. He announced the agenda. They went through a number of items Amara did not understand — a zoning variance, a contract renewal, a report about potholes. Amara listened to none of it. She kept touching the piece of paper in her lap where she had written her speech. She kept breathing slowly in through her nose and out through her mouth, as Aunt Nyalong had taught her.
Amara stood up.
Her legs were not shaking anymore, somehow.
She walked to the podium. The podium microphone was too high. She fiddled with it. She could not quite get it down. Mr. Polanski, she saw out of the corner of her eye, started to get up to help her. But at the last second she got it. She tilted the microphone. She looked out.
The council members were five shapes. She could not quite see them as faces. The lights were too bright.
But she knew — she could feel it — that behind her, the whole neighborhood was sitting. Mrs. Kwame in her green hat. Mr. Polanski in his tie. Kai's grandmother with her husband. Ms. Abebe. Aunt Nyalong, who had reached up and adjusted the collar of Amara's dress before she walked in. And Omar. And Kai. And Jenna, whose mother was up on the dais with her hands folded and her eyes on her daughter's best friend.
Amara took a breath.
"Good evening," Amara said. "My name is Amara Deng. I'm eleven years old. I'm a fifth-grader at Birchwood Elementary. And I'm here to ask you to please not close our library."
She had not looked at her paper yet. She realized she was not going to need it.
"We submitted a proposal. I know you've read it, so I won't repeat it. I just want to tell you what it means. It means a neighborhood where an old man who lost his wife can have a place to walk past every day, where he sees her there, in his mind. It means a neighborhood where a little boy can get his very first library card and his mother cries a little bit because she didn't think she would ever get her kid to this country, and now she has, and here is his library card. It means a neighborhood where an old couple can meet over a *National Geographic* and spend the next forty-seven years together. It means a neighborhood where kids can sit in a chair that fits them, and read, and become — become who they are going to be."
She took a breath.
"The Peace Library is a big idea. We know it is. We know it is not what libraries are usually. But libraries have been many things in their time, and they could be this, too. They could be a place where we come to learn how to be a community. How to listen when we do not agree. How to consult when something matters. How to hold our neighbors, even the cranky ones — especially the cranky ones — with a kind of love that is not about agreement. A kind of love that is about being a place. A place on a block, in a town, in a country, in a world. We think our library could be that. We think we could help make it that. And we would be so proud to try."
She paused.
"I know there are budget concerns. I know there are things I do not understand about running a city. But I know about my neighborhood. I know what we need. And I am asking you, please, to let us try. A pilot year. One year. If it does not work, close it then. But give us the chance to show you. Give us the chance to try."
She looked at the council. Her eyes had adjusted now. She could see Mr. Abernathy's face. She could see Ms. Morales, sitting stiff and still and looking straight at her. She could see, in the corner, a woman with brown hair and a little pin on her lapel nodding slowly.
"Thank you," Amara said.
The room was very quiet.
Then somebody — she did not know who — started clapping in the back, and then more people clapped, and then Mr. Abernathy banged his gavel gently and said, "Order, please. Thank you, Miss Deng. Next speaker is Kai Nakashima."
Kai came up. He spoke more technically than Amara, about partner organizations and projected costs and revenue models. He was very, very prepared. You could feel him being prepared. The council members wrote things down.
Omar was next. He was a blur of slides and graphs. He answered a question from one councilwoman about insurance with a straight, clear answer that made her nod.
Mr. Polanski spoke next. He said, in his gruff voice, "I am the kind of man who almost never speaks at one of these meetings. I have lived on Elm Street for forty-six years. I changed my mind about this library project two weeks ago when an eleven-year-old girl brought me tea. I have not been surprised like that in a long time. I am an old firefighter. I know a good thing when I see one. This is a good thing. Do not close this library. That is my two cents."
Ms. Abebe spoke. She was not supposed to, technically, because she was a city employee, but she had gotten permission because she was speaking as a resident. She talked, very briefly, about her forty years as a librarian — twenty-two of them at the Birchwood Branch. She said, *"In all those years, I have never seen a community rise for a library the way this one has risen for theirs. Take it as evidence. A library that would move a neighborhood like this is not an expense. It is an investment. That is the whole of my testimony. Thank you."*
Aunt Nyalong spoke. Briefly. She read a short quotation from a Bahá'í-adjacent book about consultation — not naming it as such, just reading the words about truth emerging from the clash of differing opinions, about the beauty of a group seeking understanding together. She said, *"In my tradition, we say that every child is born with something to teach the world. These children are teaching us something. It would be foolish of us not to listen."* She sat down.
Mrs. Kwame. Mr. Chavez. A young woman who had grown up using the library. The father of a two-year-old who came for storytime. A middle school teacher. The owner of the bakery.
Also, Mr. Harper.
Mr. Harper spoke last of the public speakers. He said, *"I am the man at the town meeting who used the s-word. Socialism. I want to say, publicly, that I was out of line. I do not apologize for my politics. I do apologize for my rudeness. I have been reading about consultation over the last two weeks. It is not socialism. It is not what I thought. I still have questions. I still have concerns. But I am not going to oppose this pilot. I am going to let it try. That is all I have to say."*
He sat down.
The chamber was quiet. The council conferred. They asked questions. They argued, politely, among themselves. Ms. Morales spoke carefully about what she had seen at the town meeting. A councilman from the east side asked about precedents in other cities. The woman with the lapel pin asked whether the pilot could be evaluated at six months as well as at a year. Ms. Morales proposed an amendment to keep Ms. Abebe on as coordinator, full-time, at current pay.
They voted.
Five members. It was not unanimous. One vote no — a thin councilman who cited budget concerns, and who said so briefly and without rancor. Four votes yes.
The pilot was approved.
A one-year pilot. The Birchwood Branch would reopen — or not close at all, really — as the *Peace Library Pilot Program.* Ms. Abebe would remain as coordinator. A portion of the building would be dedicated to community consultation rooms. The existing services — lending, storytime, reading programs — would all continue. Partner nonprofits would run facilitator training. A volunteer council of community members would advise. The pilot would be evaluated in October and the following April.
The gavel came down.
In the back of the room, Mrs. Kwame was the first to shout.
Then Mr. Polanski. Then Omar, who was hugging Kai. Then Ms. Abebe, who was crying openly and not trying to hide it. Then Aunt Nyalong, who had lifted both her arms high over her head in a gesture of victory as old as her village.
Amara stood very, very still in her green dress.
It was real. It was real. It was real.
They had done it.

Between the council vote in April and the Grand Opening in June, the Birchwood Branch received more mail than it had ever received.
Ms. Abebe kept every letter in a blue box on the front desk. She said that a library that had been saved by its letters should keep its letters, always, as a kind of memory. Amara helped her sort them, after school, on afternoons when the Reading Circle was taking a breather and nobody had urgent homework.
There were letters from people who lived in the neighborhood. Letters from people who had moved away, years ago, and had seen the story on the local newspaper's website. There was one letter from a woman in Oregon who said that her mother had volunteered at the Birchwood Branch in the nineteen-sixties and that she was so glad to see it alive. There was a letter from a man in Korea who said he had lived three blocks away when he was a PhD student in the nineties and had studied for his preliminary exams every day in the pumpkin chair.
"The pumpkin chair has been here that long?" Amara had said, amazed.
"Oh, yes," Ms. Abebe had said. "That chair is older than you. That chair is older than me, in library years. We have reupholstered it twice."
"Twice?"
"The original was green. Then it was blue. Now it is pumpkin. Each time, when we got the new fabric, I let the children help pick the color. The children in twenty-twelve picked pumpkin. They were very firm about it."
Amara had laughed. She had patted the pumpkin chair on its plump arm, as though it were a friend.
There were letters from children, too. Amara liked those best. Children wrote letters that were not trying to prove anything. They wrote letters that were about the library the way children saw the library. *I love the library because the carpet is soft and the books smell good.* *I love the library because Ms. Abebe has a jar of stickers behind the counter and she gives me one every time I come if I help her put the cart back.* *My favorite book is Dogman.* *My favorite book is a picture book about a porcupine but I cannot remember the name.*

Amara read that letter many times. Every time she read it, she felt the warm gold coin in her chest grow a little bigger.
Ms. Abebe said Marco had been at the town meeting, though Amara had not recognized him at the time. He had brought his sister and his mother. His mother had cried a little when Amara had finished her opening remarks. Amara had not known, then, that it had been about a boy and a book about a frog.
"A librarian," Ms. Abebe said once, folding a letter carefully, "rarely gets to see what becomes of her work. We plant and plant, but we are not usually present for the harvest. This library, this year — this is a harvest, Amara. An old harvest. From seeds planted twenty and thirty and forty years ago."
"That's a nice way to think about it."
"It is the truth. It is not only a nice way."

Not all the mail was letters of support.
There was a thick envelope from a lawyer in the state capital, addressed to Ms. Abebe, which Ms. Abebe read carefully and then set aside with a small sigh. Amara asked about it. Ms. Abebe said it was from a legal foundation that did not approve of the Peace Library's stated intention to include dispute resolution programming, and that had sent what Ms. Abebe called a "strongly worded letter" raising theoretical concerns about liability and scope. Ms. Abebe had forwarded the letter to the city attorney's office, where it was being considered, politely, and filed, and — Ms. Abebe strongly suspected — ignored.
"People worry," Ms. Abebe said. "It is their nature. The job is not to make the worrying stop. The job is to keep working while the worrying happens."
"That's hard."
"Everything good is hard."
*THIS IS NOT A LIBRARY ANYMORE. THIS IS AN AGENDA. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED.*
Amara read it standing beside Ms. Abebe in the morning light. Her cheeks had gotten hot.
"That's mean," she said.
"Yes."
"Who would write that?"
"I don't know. Probably someone in the neighborhood."
"Should we — should we put it up somewhere?"
"No."
"Throw it away?"
"No."
"What should we do?"
Ms. Abebe considered. She tapped her chin with her forefinger.
"We will put it in the blue box," she said, "with the other letters. It is part of the record. Someone was worried enough to write it. Someone was angry. That is a real thing, and we do not pretend it is not. But we also do not put it up on the wall, because it is not a thing that tells the truth about who we are. It is a thing that tells the truth about what the writer was feeling when they wrote it. And those are different truths. Do you understand?"
"I think so."
"Good."
Ms. Abebe slid the unsigned letter into the blue box. She closed the lid. She set the box back on the shelf.
"Someday," she said, "the writer of that letter may come in. They may read a book. They may sit in the pumpkin chair. They may ask a question. And when that day comes, I will be the librarian who helps them. The same as I help everyone. Because that is what a library is for. Do you know? A library is for the ones who hate it, too. Not only the ones who love it. The ones who hate it deserve a library also. Maybe more."
Amara had not thought about it that way before.
She thought about it for a long time afterward.
She thought about how hard that was, to be the kind of place that welcomed even the ones who wanted you gone. She thought about how that was a kind of consultation too — not the formal kind, with chairs in a circle, but the everyday kind. The kind a librarian lived by, whether anyone noticed or not.
She decided, that afternoon, that if she ever grew up to be anything, she wanted to be something like Ms. Abebe.
Not a librarian, necessarily. Not exactly. But a person who kept the door open. A person with a blue box. A person who knew how to hold a thing against her chest without squeezing it, and how to set a thing down without dropping it.
She drew, for the first time in months, a small bold heart.
She did not cross it out.

The Peace Library opened on a Saturday in June.
The morning was hot and bright. The sky was the kind of blue that made you squint. The oak tree out front had new leaves that were a clean pale green, and the knot that looked like a frog was still there. Ms. Abebe had tied a ribbon around the oak tree. She said it was for the tree, because the tree deserved to be included.
Amara wore a sundress. Kai wore a new shirt his mother had bought him. Jenna wore her favorite jeans and a T-shirt that Omar had helped her silkscreen with a logo Kai had designed — a little book opening like a bird, and under it the words *PEACE LIBRARY.* Omar had also printed a big version of the same design on a banner, which they had hung over the doorway.
People started arriving at nine in the morning, even though the event was not until ten.
A small Sudanese drumming circle that Aunt Nyalong had organized, through her church, played on the sidewalk out front. A line of neighborhood kids formed at the doorway, clutching library cards like passports. Mr. Franklin the baker had set up a folding table full of pastries. Ms. Abebe was inside, coordinating helpers, her face shining with a kind of happiness Amara had not seen on her before.
At ten, Mr. Abernathy the council chair came with a comically large pair of scissors to cut a ceremonial ribbon across the front door. There were speeches. Jenna's mother spoke briefly and well. Ms. Abebe spoke. Amara spoke, shakily but happily, in front of a local newspaper reporter and two camera phones.
And then they opened the doors, and the neighborhood came in.
Amara had imagined this moment for months. She had imagined it at night when she could not sleep. She had imagined it when she was walking home from school. She had imagined the crowd, and the light coming through the windows, and the little flags of construction paper they would hang, and all the rest.
But what she had not imagined was how it would *feel.*
It felt like — she searched for the word — like *arrival.* Like she had been walking somewhere for a long time and had just gotten there. Like the house at the end of the road was lit. Like the door was open.
Mrs. Kwame came in with three neighbors Amara had never met, all of them laughing about something. Mr. Chavez came in with a book to donate in memory of his wife. Mr. Harper came in alone, looking a little awkward, but Ms. Abebe went up to him immediately and took his elbow and gave him a tour with such warm attention that he came out of the back room visibly easier in his own skin.
Mr. Polanski came in with a plate of coleslaw and a grumpy expression, set down the coleslaw at Mr. Franklin's table, and said, "It's my daughter's recipe. Don't let it sit out too long, it's got mayo." He hovered. He drank coffee. He pretended he was only there for five minutes, but Amara noticed he did not leave for three hours.
A group of high school kids came in and went straight to the nonfiction section, where they started looking through books about civics with a passionate intensity that Amara had never associated with high school kids. Apparently they had a social studies project. Apparently they had heard about the Peace Library and thought it would make a great case study. Apparently high school kids sometimes surprised you.
Aunt Nyalong had set up, in the brand-new consultation room, a simple circle of eight chairs. On the walls she had hung — with Ms. Abebe's permission — a few framed principles. *Listen to understand, not to reply. Speak briefly and truthfully. Once offered, an idea belongs to the group. The goal is not victory but truth.* Things like that.
That afternoon, at three o'clock, the consultation room had its first official use.
Two neighbors had come in — a Mr. Santos and a Mrs. Dunham — with a dispute that had apparently been going on for eight months, involving a fence, a tomato plant, a dog, and a small amount of property damage. They had been scheduled as the inaugural appointment, facilitated by a trained mediator named Rosa, from one of the partner nonprofits, with Aunt Nyalong observing as a co-facilitator.
Amara was not in the room. She had homework to finish on one of the big tables in the main library.
But the door to the consultation room was half-open, and she could hear the soft sound of voices, and at the end of forty minutes the door opened and Mr. Santos and Mrs. Dunham came out, and they did not hug, but they shook hands, and Mr. Santos said, *"Thanks, Rose. Thanks, Mrs. Deng. We'll bring back the next round of stuff next month and see how it's going,"* and Mrs. Dunham said, *"All right, Hector, see you at the next block party,"* and they walked out together, and Rosa turned to Aunt Nyalong and quietly gave her a high-five.
Amara, without meaning to, started to laugh and cry at the same time, right there at her homework table.
Ms. Abebe came and sat next to her. She had a cup of tea in her hand.
"Amara, *wullige,*" she said. "Are you all right?"
"I'm great," Amara said. "I'm great. I'm better than great."
"It is a good day."
"It is a very good day."
"One of the good days. There will be hard days, you know. The pilot is only a year. Things will go wrong. Always they do."
"I know."
"But this one — this one is a good day."
"Yes."
They sat for a while, watching the library breathe. A toddler had fallen asleep in the picture book nook. A teenager was helping Kai's grandmother find the large-print section. The high school students were still arguing, happily, about civics. Omar was setting up some kind of display in the corner involving a small robot he had built for a science fair. Mr. Polanski was laughing at something Jenna's mother had said, which was an unlikely pairing that Amara had not anticipated, and which filled her with a small private joy.
"Amara," Ms. Abebe said. "May I tell you something?"
"Yes."
"When I was a young woman — in Addis Ababa — I worked in a great library. The National Library of Ethiopia. It was a very old building. Beautiful. Full of scholars. It had manuscripts from the sixth century. It had a scroll I once held in my own hands that was older than anything in my country's museum. It was, in every sense of the word, an important library."
"Wow."
"But I will tell you, *wullige,*" Ms. Abebe said, and her voice was soft, "that little Birchwood Branch, with its pumpkin chair and its drafty window and its seventy thousand books, is every bit as important to me. Every. Bit. And this day — this day is equal in my memory to any day I ever had in the National Library of my homeland. Do you understand?"
Amara turned to look at her.
Ms. Abebe's eyes were old and tired and very full.
"Yes," Amara said. "I understand."
"You are a good child. I have watched you grow. You have a serious face. You always have. But today, on your serious face, I see something I have not seen before. Do you know what it is?"
"What?"
"Peace," Ms. Abebe said, smiling. "Peace, Amara. A peace that was not there before."
Amara felt it. A warm gold coin. Bigger than before.
Yes. That was it. Yes.

On the Monday after Opening Day, Amara came into the library before school to drop off a book.
The library was not quite open yet. Ms. Abebe was inside, unlocking the drawers of the front desk, humming to herself. The pumpkin chair, in its corner, was in a shaft of early light that fell through the east window — a bright slanted beam full of tiny drifting dust motes, the kind of light that makes everything it touches look important.
Amara stood and looked at the pumpkin chair for a moment.
She thought about the man from Korea who had studied for his exams in it. She thought about the children in twenty-twelve who had picked its color. She thought about her own self at age five, climbing into it with a picture book that was too hard for her, refusing to give up.
She thought about all the people — the hundreds, maybe thousands — who had sat in that chair in the years since they had first put it down in the corner of the Birchwood Branch. The ones who had laughed in it. The ones who had cried in it. The ones who had fallen asleep in it, their book sliding sideways onto their lap. The ones who had read aloud to their children in it. The ones who had proposed, in it, to the person who would become their husband or wife — because, yes, that had happened too, Ms. Abebe said, more than once.
The pumpkin chair, Amara thought, was a kind of small quiet witness. It did not say anything. It did not move. It just kept being a chair, in the corner, and letting the people who needed it come and sit.
A Peace Library, she thought, was just that, but bigger. A pumpkin chair for a whole neighborhood.
She touched the armrest gently. The fabric was soft and warm from the sun.
"Thanks," she said to the chair, out loud, very quietly.
The chair did not answer. But it did not have to.

The summer went slowly in the good way.
Amara walked to the library most mornings at about ten. She brought her own books, and a water bottle, and sometimes a snack Aunt Nyalong had packed. She sat in the pumpkin chair for the first part of the day, reading. She had moved on to bigger books now. She was working her way through a stack Ms. Abebe had recommended, about the histories of consultation in different cultures. The Iroquois book. A thick history of town halls. A small beautiful volume of short essays about Quakers. Others.
At lunchtime she walked two blocks to her aunt's apartment or met her father at the diner, where they split a sandwich and her father sipped coffee and listened to her report on the morning.
After lunch she volunteered. She had been appointed, semi-officially, as an Assistant to the Coordinator, which mostly meant she shelved books and helped kids find things and sometimes sat quietly in the consultation room while grown-ups worked through problems, not saying anything, just being a presence. Aunt Nyalong had taught her how to do this. *You do not need to speak,* Aunt Nyalong had said. *Your listening is a gift. A room that knows it is being listened to is a different room.*
Kai came in most days too. Jenna was away for three weeks at her grandmother's house in Puerto Rico, and Omar was at a coding camp upstate for a month, but he sent postcards and snippets of code by email. Amara put them all up on the bulletin board in the kids' corner of the library.
In July, there was a small setback. A man came in — an angry man, from another neighborhood — who said the Peace Library was communist propaganda and who threatened to write letters. Ms. Abebe handled him with dignity. He left. He did write letters. The letters were published in the local paper. A fuss happened on social media. Amara read some of it and then, at her aunt's advice, stopped reading. "It will pass, *nyalual,*" Aunt Nyalong said. "Angry words pass. The library will still be here." And it was.
In late July, there was a small success. A family whose older son had not spoken to them in two years came in and requested a consultation. The son had moved in with a cousin after a fight. Rosa facilitated. Aunt Nyalong observed. Whatever happened in that room — Amara was not there, and would not have told anyone if she had been — was something, because a week later the mother came back with a bouquet of zinnias from her garden for Ms. Abebe, and said, in a voice that trembled, *"Please tell them thank you. Our son came home last night."*
*Replicable,* Amara had thought, when she read the report. *As in, somewhere else could do this, too.*

The last Saturday of the summer, the day before school started, Amara sat on the front steps of the library in the late-afternoon sun.
It was the warm time of day when everything turned a little gold. The oak tree's leaves were dark green now, full summer. The frog knot was still there. The sidewalk was warm through the thin cotton of her shorts. Across the street, a boy was riding his bike in lazy figure-eights.
Aunt Nyalong came out of the library and sat down beside her, making a small grunt of effort as she lowered herself onto the step. She had been inside helping with a children's program about storytelling traditions, and her yellow head-wrap had come slightly loose, and she was holding two small paper cups of lemonade.
"For you," Aunt Nyalong said, handing one over.
"Thanks, Auntie."
They sipped. The lemonade was sweet and cold.
"Auntie," Amara said. "Can I ask you something?"
"Always."
"Do you think my mother would have liked this?"
Aunt Nyalong considered. She took her time. She always did.
"Your mother," she said, "was a woman who could not sit still when a thing was wrong. She would see a thing, and she would start fixing it before she knew what she was fixing. She was like that with people. A stranger on the street who was crying — your mother would be there, in her coat, with a tissue, before you could blink."
"Really?"
"Yes, *nyalual.* You have some of this from her, I think. Not the impulsive part. You are more careful than she was. But the — the *not able to watch a thing be wrong and do nothing.* This is your mother, right there in you."
"Oh."
Aunt Nyalong put her arm around her niece's shoulders.
"Yes," she said. "Your mother would have been delighted by this. She would have been in the library every day. She would have been, probably, a little bossy. She would have tried to make everyone agree with her and then laughed at herself when she could not. She would have been so proud of you, Amara. I can tell you this, from knowing her — she would have been so proud that she would have cried. And then she would have made you *kissra* with stew, with extra spice, because that is what she did when she was overwhelmed with love. She made food."
Amara felt her throat get tight in the old way, but not in a sad way. In a full way.
"I wish I remembered her."
"You do, in a way. You remember her through me. Through your father. Through your own body, which came from her body. Through your own voice, which sounds like her voice when you are tired. Through your own laugh, which is her laugh exactly. You remember her, Amara. Not the way other people do. But you do."
"Okay."
"Okay."
They sat for a while.
A man Amara did not know came up the library steps and nodded to them and went inside. A minute later a woman with a stroller came out, smiled at them, and walked down the sidewalk. Across the street, the boy on the bike rode past once more, then turned a corner and was gone. The shadows were getting longer. Somewhere a screen door slammed.
Mr. Polanski came around the corner carrying a pitcher of something.
"Afternoon, ladies," he said. "Made more lemonade. Fresh squeezed. My granddaughter's recipe — she used to make it with Linda. I thought, may as well."
"Thank you, Stan," Aunt Nyalong said. She had started calling him Stan two weeks before, and he had, to Amara's quiet amazement, allowed it.
"Yeah, yeah. Here." He poured fresh lemonade into their cups, which were half-empty, and then he sat down on the step below theirs, with a grunt of his own. He was sweating slightly. He wiped his forehead with a handkerchief. "Ms. Abebe says to tell you there's a couple of books at the desk for Amara. Something about Ethiopian scholarship? I don't know. She said Amara would know."
"I'll get them when I go in."
"No hurry."
The three of them sat there on the library steps. A little breeze moved the leaves of the oak tree. The drumming circle from opening day had not returned, but Amara could hear, from somewhere down the block, a radio playing a soft old song in Spanish.
Amara thought, then, about all the people who had brought her to this step.
Her father, who had told her, *listen to him, find out why.*
Her aunt, who had said, *being heard is a medicine,* and then stood up in a rainy library and proved it with her own life.
Ms. Abebe, who had handed her books like handing her torches.
Kai, who had walked up to her at recess with a quiet idea that had turned out to be a big idea.
Omar, with his soldering iron sweatshirt.
Jenna, her best friend, her always-best friend, angry-thinking and true.
Jenna's mother.
Mr. Polanski, right here, in his handkerchief and his undershirt, sitting on her step with his lemonade.
And her mother. Whom she did not remember. Whom she knew, in some way, through her aunt's hum and her own laugh and the food she loved.
All of them, together, had made something. Something that had not been there before. Something small, in the big scheme of things — one library, in one neighborhood, in one town. But also, in another way, something not small. Something that — if it could be done here — could be done a hundred other places. A thousand. Something that was, as the evaluation had said, *replicable.*
Amara took out a book from her backpack. It was the blue book Ms. Abebe had given her months and months ago, the one with the passage she had underlined. She opened it now. She read again the passage about how an idea, once offered, no longer belonged to the person who raised it.
*The idea no longer belongs to them.*
Amara closed the book softly.
She leaned against her aunt's shoulder. Her aunt leaned back, steady as a wall, warm as a hearth. Mr. Polanski, on the step below, stretched out his legs and groaned a little groan about his knees, and then laughed at himself for groaning.
The sun was going down. The sky was turning peach and gold. The lights inside the library were coming on one by one as Ms. Abebe moved through the building, flicking switches, closing up for the evening. The kids' nook lit up. The reading area. The new consultation room. The front desk, with its little brass bell.
The Birchwood Branch.
Hers. Theirs. The neighborhood's. Everyone's.
Amara closed her eyes and felt, in her chest, the warm gold coin. Bigger than ever. She did not know yet what she would be when she grew up. She did not know where she would live. She did not know what would happen to the pilot after the year was up, or what would happen after that. She did not know, really, very much about anything.
She knew the library.
She knew the neighborhood.
She knew that if you listened — if you really listened — a thing could change. An old man could change his mind on his own porch. A mother and daughter could find their way across a table. A family could bring its son home. A place that was going to be closed could be opened instead.
She knew, with a knowing that felt very old and very young at the same time, that this was what she wanted her life to be about.
Listening.
And then building.
And then listening again.
She opened her eyes. Aunt Nyalong was smiling down at her. Mr. Polanski had caught her looking and raised his lemonade in a silent toast.
"Cheers," he said, gruff as ever.
"Cheers," Amara said.
And the three of them clinked their paper cups, very carefully, so the lemonade would not spill, on the steps of the Peace Library, at the end of the best summer of Amara Deng's eleven-year-old life.

AUTHOR'S NOTE
This book is also, quietly, a thank-you to the refugee and immigrant families who have made American neighborhoods richer with their gifts. Amara and her aunt are invented, but families like theirs live on every block of every town in this country. They bring their songs, their foods, their griefs, and — often — a hard-won wisdom about what it takes to rebuild after everything has been lost. May our libraries always have a chair for them. May our neighborhoods always have a porch.
Gather three or four people you trust. Choose a question that matters to you — one you do not already know the answer to. Agree, before you start, that no one will interrupt, that each voice will be welcomed, and that the goal is to find the best thinking together, not to win. Let each person speak in turn. Listen with your whole attention. When it is your turn, begin by saying back, in your own words, what you heard from the person before you. Offer your own idea, and then let it go — it belongs to the group now. Take your time. Do not be afraid of silence. Silence is where new thoughts are often born.
You may find, as Amara did, that something changes in the room. You may find, also, that it is not magic. That it takes practice. That some days the circle works, and some days it does not, and that the days when it does not are also worth having, because they teach the group how to try again.
A neighborhood, like a library, is made of small acts over long years. A kind word. A returned book. A handshake across a difference. A thousand unremarkable Tuesdays. If you are reading this, dear young reader, you already have more power to shape your neighborhood than you might think. You can listen to your grandmother. You can notice the neighbor who is lonely. You can put up a yellow flyer. You can bring tea to a porch.
You can be the one who starts.
