CHAPTER ONE (Narrated by Maryam Shahidi)

The roses were wrong.

Maryam Shahidi stood at the card table she had set up in the corner of the Hendersons' living room, arranging a vase of grocery store roses that refused to cooperate. They kept listing to the left, all of them, as though drawn by some invisible tide. She had clipped their stems at angles, as her mother had taught her sixty years ago in Isfahan, and she had added a crushed aspirin to the water, as her daughter-in-law Nadia claimed worked wonders, but still they leaned.

"They are mourning too," she whispered, and then shook her head at herself. She was seventy-three years old and she was talking to flowers. Hossein would have laughed at her. Hossein would have taken the vase gently from her hands and rearranged every stem with the careful precision he brought to everything — fixing a watch, folding a prayer shawl, buttoning his shirt — and the roses would have stood perfectly upright, chastened by his patience.

But Hossein had been dead for four months and eleven days, and the roses would have to manage without him, as she would.

She stepped back and surveyed the room. The Hendersons' living room was large by the standards of Grainfield, Kansas — large enough to hold the entire Bahá'í community, which tonight would number perhaps twenty-two souls, twenty-three if old Margaret Blakely's hip allowed her to make the drive from her farmhouse. The carpet was the color of oatmeal. The walls held family photographs and a framed calligraphy of the Greatest Name that Donna Henderson had ordered from a Bahá'í bookstore in Evanston. The furniture had been pushed back against the walls to make room for folding chairs arranged in a rough rectangle.

This was the space where they gathered every nineteen days. In the Bahá'í calendar, each month held nineteen days, and each month began with a Feast — not a feast of food, though food always came, but a feast of spirit, of consultation, of togetherness. Tonight was the first day of the month of Qawl, which meant Speech. Maryam found this appropriate. She had been silent for so long.

The door opened and cold air rushed in. November in Kansas was not the bitter cold of January, but it had an insistence about it, a way of pushing past doors and coats and settling into bones. Dale Henderson stamped his boots on the mat.

"Maryam, you're here early," he said, pulling off his John Deere cap to reveal the flat white hair beneath. "Donna's still fussing with the rice pudding. Says she burned the bottom layer."

"Tell her the burned part is the best part," Maryam said. "In Iran we call it tahdig — the golden crust at the bottom of the rice pot. It is the piece everyone fights over."

Dale grinned. He was a tall man, broad through the shoulders despite his seventy years, with hands that seemed too large for any task smaller than baling hay. He and Donna had become Bahá'ís twelve years ago, after a series of firesides — informal study gatherings — hosted by the previous Local Spiritual Assembly. Maryam remembered the night they had declared their faith. Donna had wept, and Dale had sat very still, his big hands folded in his lap, and said only, "Well, I guess that's that then." He had not wept, but his eyes had gone bright as river stones.

"Is Nadia coming tonight?" Dale asked, hanging his coat on the hook by the door.

"She is bringing the children. She says Arash has been asking about it all day. He wants to know if there will be cookies."

"There will be cookies. Donna made three kinds."

"Then Arash will be satisfied."

They smiled at each other across the room, two old people who had buried enough between them — Dale his first wife to cancer, Maryam her Hossein to a heart that simply stopped — to know that the small things were the only things that mattered. Cookies. Roses. The sound of a door opening to let in cold air and warm faces.

Others began to arrive. Maryam watched them from her station by the roses, noting each entrance the way she had once noted the arrivals at her own home in Isfahan, before the Revolution, before the family's long journey through Turkey and Austria and finally to this flat, golden place.

James Okafor came in wearing a North Face jacket too thin for the weather, his locks pulled back in a band, his smile wide but strained. He was twenty-six and had declared as a Bahá'í two years ago, the only member of his family to do so. His mother, Maryam knew, had not spoken to him in five months. He carried a guitar case, which meant he had prepared something for the devotional portion.

"As-salamu alaykum, Mama Maryam," he said, bending to kiss her cheek. He had picked up the greeting from her, though she had told him many times that it was Arabic, not Farsi, and that her people said something different. He didn't care. He liked the sound of it.

"Wa alaykum as-salam, James. You will play for us tonight?"

"Trying out a new one. No promises."

She patted his arm. She loved this boy — and he was a boy to her, all of them were — loved the earnestness that burned in him like a coal that couldn't decide if it wanted to be a flame or not.

Sarah Chen arrived next, stomping snow off her boots with more force than necessary. She was twenty, a junior at the state university forty minutes north, majoring in something called Comparative Religion, which struck Maryam as a very American way to approach the sacred — comparing, measuring, ranking, as though God were a series of products on a shelf. Sarah had grown up Bahá'í, the daughter of a Chinese-American mother and a white father, both deepened believers, and she had recently begun asking the kinds of questions that made the older members of the community shift in their chairs. Good questions, Maryam thought. Dangerous questions. The kind that either built faith or dismantled it.

"Hey, Maryam-jan," Sarah said, using the Farsi endearment she had learned as a child. "The roses look beautiful."

"They lean."

"Maybe they're praying."

Maryam looked at the girl — the young woman — and felt a pulse of something that was not quite grief and not quite love but lived in the territory between them. "Maybe they are," she said.

The Al-Rashidi family arrived in a cluster — Tariq and Fatima and their three children, Yusuf, Layla, and baby Omar, who was not really a baby anymore at two and a half but who would be called baby Omar until another baby came along, which given the tightness of Fatima's smile and the shadows beneath her eyes seemed unlikely anytime soon. They had come to Grainfield from a refugee camp in Djibouti, by way of Chicago, eighteen months ago. Tariq worked the night shift at the grain elevator. Fatima was learning English at the community college, slowly, fiercely, with a determination that Maryam recognized because it mirrored her own, forty years ago.

"Marhaba," Maryam said, and Fatima's face opened like a window.

"Marhaba, Maryam-khala," she replied, shifting Omar to her other hip. “The perfect soul of man—that is to say, the perfect individual—is like a mirror wherein the Sun of Reality is reflected.”

"You are correct. Give me the baby."

Fatima handed Omar over with the grateful efficiency of a woman who had been holding a child for two and a half years without rest. Maryam settled him on her hip, feeling his weight fill the empty space that lived there, the space that had once held her own children and then her grandchildren and now held nothing but the memory of holding.

The room filled. Donna Henderson emerged from the kitchen with the rice pudding, which smelled of cinnamon and redemption. Tom and Linda Brewer, the farmer couple from the south end of the county, arrived with their teenage granddaughter, Bree, who came under protest and sat in the corner with her phone until Linda gently took it from her. Patricia Wallace, who everyone called Pat, came in with a stack of papers — she was the secretary of the Local Spiritual Assembly and never went anywhere without papers — and settled into a chair with the practiced air of a woman who had attended more Feasts than she could count and would attend more still.

Marcus Young, the Assembly chair, arrived last, as he always did, not from any sense of drama but because Marcus did everything with a deliberateness that others sometimes mistook for slowness. He was forty-five, a high school history teacher, a Black man in a white town who had found in the Bahá'í Faith a vocabulary for the things he had always felt but never been able to say. He had been chair of the Assembly for three years and carried the weight of it in his shoulders.

"Good evening, friends," Marcus said, and the room quieted. He stood at the front, near the calligraphy of the Greatest Name, and looked out at them — all of them, this improbable collection of souls who had been drawn by various roads to this oatmeal-carpeted living room in the middle of the American plains. "Welcome to the Feast of Qawl. The month of Speech."

He opened his prayer book. “I render Thee thanks, therefore, and extol Thee, in the name of all them that are dear to Thee, for that Thou hast caused them to be born again, by reason of the living waters which have flowed down out of the mouth of Thy will.”

And they began.

Maryam held Omar on her lap and listened. She did not read tonight. She was not ready to read aloud, not yet. Her voice still caught on the sacred words, not because they were sacred but because they were the words Hossein had loved, and hearing them without him was like hearing half a conversation — the call without the response, the question without the answer.

In practice, Maryam had observed over fifty years of Feasts, it was often messy.

"We have several items tonight," Pat said, consulting her papers. "First, the Assembly has received a letter from the National Spiritual Assembly regarding the upcoming Ridvan election. Second, we need to discuss the children's class situation. Mrs. Novak has informed us she can no longer teach on Sunday mornings. Third, there's the matter of the community picnic date."

"Can we talk about the children's classes first?" Nadia said. She had arrived while Maryam was distracted by Omar and was sitting across the room, her dark hair pulled back, her face showing the particular mix of determination and exhaustion that characterized young mothers everywhere. "We really need to find a replacement soon. The kids are — they need consistency."

"Of course," Marcus said. "The floor is open."

Maryam watched it all. She saw how Marcus guided the conversation with the gentleness of a man herding cats — cats who all believed they had received direct instruction from God on the proper management of children's education. She saw how Pat took notes with grim efficiency. She saw how Tariq wanted to speak but held back, his English still a cage around his thoughts. She saw how Sarah leaned forward, eager, and then leaned back, unsure, and then leaned forward again.

"I could help," Sarah said finally. "On weekends I'm home from school. I could help with the classes."

"That would be wonderful," Donna said.

"I mean, I'm not — I don't know if I'm the right person. I have a lot of questions myself right now."

"Questions are good for children," Maryam said, surprising herself. Everyone looked at her. She had not meant to speak. But the words were out, and so she continued. "In Iran, when I was a girl, the best teachers were the ones who were still asking questions. The ones who had all the answers were the most dangerous."

There was a silence. Then Marcus nodded. "Thank you, Maryam. I think that's exactly right."

The consultation moved on. The picnic was scheduled for next spring. The Ridvan election letter was read aloud. There were questions. There were answers. There was Pat, writing it all down.

Finally, Marcus smiled. "That concludes the administrative portion. Shall we move to the social portion?"

"I thought you'd never ask," Dale said, and everyone laughed, and the room shifted from the formal to the familial, and Donna brought out the cookies — three kinds, as promised — and Fatima's hummus appeared alongside chips and carrot sticks, and Nadia produced a thermos of Persian tea that she had made from Maryam's recipe, and the children who had been sitting more or less patiently erupted from their chairs and began the serious work of being children.

Maryam sat in her corner and watched. She held a cup of tea in both hands, feeling its warmth travel into her fingers and up her arms and into the place where the cold had lived since February, since the morning she had found Hossein still in bed at nine o'clock and had known, before she touched him, before she pulled back the covers, that he was gone.

James sat down beside her. "How are you really, Mama Maryam?"

"I am here," she said. "That is something."

"It's everything."

She looked at him — this young man with his guitar and his aching distance from his mother and his faith that burned and flickered like a candle in a draft. "How are you, James?"

"I'm here too," he said, and they sat together in the understanding that being here was, indeed, everything — was, in fact, the whole point of these nineteen days, these gatherings, this insistent returning to each other across all the distances of culture and age and language and loss.

Around them, the community moved and spoke and laughed and ate. Arash got his cookies. Baby Omar toddled from lap to lap, collecting affection like a tax. Sarah and Bree discovered a mutual interest in something on Bree's phone and bent their heads together, one skeptical college student and one reluctant teenager, finding a brief common ground. Tariq spoke quietly with Dale about the grain elevator, about the machinery, about the particular Kansas darkness of November nights when you worked from ten until six and the stars were your only companions.

Tom Brewer cornered Pat to discuss, at length, the matter of the community newsletter, which he felt should include more agricultural content. "People don't know where their food comes from," he said, his weathered face creased with conviction. "It's a spiritual issue."

"I'll put it on the agenda for the next Assembly meeting," Pat said, which was what Pat always said, and which was, in its way, a form of love.

At nine-thirty, people began to leave. The departure was slow, as departures from Feasts always were — a series of embraces and reminders and last-minute conversations conducted in the doorway with coats half-on. Maryam helped Donna wash the dishes, standing at the sink with her hands in warm water, passing clean plates to Donna to dry.

"Thank you for the roses," Donna said.

"They leaned."

"Everything leans, honey. That's what makes it beautiful."

Maryam turned off the faucet and stood for a moment with her wet hands dripping into the sink. Outside, car doors opened and closed. Engines turned over in the cold. The sounds of leaving.

"Donna," she said.

"Hmm?"

"I am glad I came tonight."

Donna set down the dish towel and put her arms around Maryam, and Maryam let herself be held by this large, soft, Kansas woman who smelled of cinnamon and dish soap, and she thought of something she had once read in the Writings — that the purpose of the Nineteen Day Feast was to foster love and fellowship among the believers, to bind their hearts together, to ensure that no one was forgotten.

She had not been forgotten. She had walked through the door and they had been there, all of them, with their cookies and their consultations and their imperfect, insistent love.

Nadia drove her home. The children were asleep in the backseat, Arash with cookie crumbs still on his chin, his younger sister Laleh curled against him like a comma. The heater hummed. The headlights carved a tunnel through the darkness of the county road.

"Maman," Nadia said, using the Farsi word for mother, though Maryam was her mother-in-law. "Will you be all right tonight?"

"I am always all right."

"That's not what I asked."

Maryam looked out the window at the darkness, the absolute darkness of the plains at night, where the land and the sky were the same shade of black and only the stars marked the difference. "I will pray," she said. "And I will sleep. And tomorrow I will wake up and it will be the second day of Qawl, and I will still be here."

"We need you here," Nadia said.

"I know," Maryam said, and for the first time in four months and eleven days, she almost believed it.

The car turned onto her street. The porch light was on — she always left it on now, because coming home to a dark house was more than she could bear. Nadia pulled into the driveway and Maryam leaned over to kiss her cheek.

"Thank you, Nadia-jan."

"Goodnight, Maman."

Maryam walked up the path to her front door, her breath making small clouds in the cold air. She could still hear the echo of the evening — James's guitar, Marcus's calm voice, Omar's laughter, the clink of teacups. She unlocked the door and stepped inside.

The house was warm and quiet and empty, and it was hers, and she was here, and that was everything, and it would have to be enough.

She left the porch light on.

CHAPTER TWO (Narrated by James Okafor)

He reached for the book and opened it to a prayer he had read so many times the page fell open on its own. He read it silently, his lips moving, the words traveling from the page through his eyes into whatever part of him was capable of receiving them. Then he set the book down and stared at the ceiling.

The ceiling of his apartment was water-stained. The apartment itself was a one-bedroom above the hardware store on Main Street, which meant that in winter it smelled faintly of kerosene and in summer of fertilizer. The rent was four hundred and fifty dollars a month, which was what James could afford on the salary of a part-time music teacher at the community center and part-time barista at the coffee shop that the university students had recently discovered and begun to overrun.

He got up. He showered. He stood in front of the mirror and examined his face — the face his mother had made, had loved, had turned away from when he told her about the Faith. James Akubueze Okafor. Twenty-six years old. Six feet one. Locks that reached his shoulders when he let them down, which he did only in private, because his mother had always said his hair was his crown, and crowns deserved ceremony.

His mother. He pushed the thought of her to the side, as he did every morning, the way you push a plate to the edge of the table, knowing it will eventually fall but hoping it won't be today.

He dressed — jeans, a thermal shirt, his North Face jacket that was too thin for Kansas but had been a gift from his brother DeShawn, who lived in Atlanta and thought Kansas was basically the same climate as Georgia — and left the apartment. The stairs down to the street were narrow and uneven, and he navigated them in the dark by memory, his guitar case in one hand, his prayer book in his jacket pocket, his keys jangling in the other hand.

He had been in Grainfield for three years, since graduating from the music program at a small liberal arts college in Ohio. He had come here for the teaching job, which paid almost nothing, and he had stayed for reasons that were harder to articulate — something about the space, the openness, the way the sky here was so enormous it made your problems feel proportionally small.

And he had stayed for the community. The Bahá'í community.

He had first heard about the Faith from a roommate in college, a quiet Iranian kid named Kamran who kept a prayer book on his desk and sometimes whispered in a language James didn't recognize. James had asked about it one night, late, both of them procrastinating on papers, and Kamran had told him — simply, without salesmanship or pressure — about a Faith that taught the oneness of God, the oneness of religion, the oneness of humanity. That said the earth was one country and all people its citizens. That believed in the equality of men and women, the harmony of science and religion, the elimination of all forms of prejudice.

James had listened, and something in him had recognized the words before he understood them, the way you sometimes recognize a melody you've never consciously heard.

When James finally declared, sitting in the living room of a Bahá'í family in Columbus, Ohio, he had felt a door open inside him. Not a dramatic opening, not a Hollywood moment of light and music, but a quiet, decisive click, like a lock turning, like a yes.

He had called his mother that night.

"Mama, I need to tell you something."

Gloria Okafor had listened. She was a woman who listened carefully, who measured words before she spent them, who had raised three children on a nurse's salary after James's father left and who had done it all with the fierce, sustaining faith of the AME church that had been her family's spiritual home for four generations.

When James finished explaining, there was a silence on the phone that lasted long enough for him to hear his own heartbeat.

"James," she said finally. "Have you lost your mind?"

"No, Mama. I think I found it."

"The church your grandmother built with her own hands. The church where you were baptized. Where your father and I were married, God help us. And you're leaving it for — what? Some religion I never even heard of?"

"It's not about leaving, Mama. It's about —"

"Don't you tell me what it's about. I know what it's about. It's about you being too smart for your own good, too smart for the faith of your people, too smart for the God who carried your family through slavery and Jim Crow and everything else. That God isn't good enough for you anymore?"

"That's not —"

"I don't want to hear it, James. I don't want to hear it."

He knew it. He carried that knowledge the way he carried his guitar — always, everywhere, a weight that was also a companion.

Today's special was a maple oat latte. James wrote it carefully, the chalk cool and dry against his fingers.

He thought about Maryam a lot. She reminded him of his grandmother, who had died when James was twelve — the same quiet strength, the same eyes that had seen too much and still looked for beauty. He visited Maryam twice a week, brought her groceries when the weather was bad, sat with her and drank tea and listened to stories about Isfahan that seemed as distant and glittering as fairy tales. She called him "my boy," and each time she said it, something in him ached with the sweetness of being claimed.

At ten, his shift ended. He handed the counter over to the afternoon barista, a college kid named Tyler who said "dude" approximately once per sentence, and walked back out into the gray Kansas day.

He had two hours before his teaching session at the community center, so he went home. The apartment felt smaller in daylight, the water stains more visible, the solitude more insistent. He sat on the edge of his bed and picked up his phone.

No messages from his mother. There were never messages from his mother anymore. He scrolled to her name in his contacts — Gloria Okafor, Mama — and stared at it. His thumb hovered over the call button.

He put the phone down.

Instead, he picked up his guitar. Not the performance guitar, the nice one he'd bought with a semester's worth of savings, but the old one, the one his mother had given him for his fourteenth birthday. It was a battered Yamaha acoustic with a crack along the body that he'd repaired with wood glue and faith, and it had a tone that was warm and slightly rough, like a voice that had been singing all day.

He played. Not the prayer he'd played at Feast, but something new, something that had been forming in him like weather — a melody that moved between major and minor, between hope and grief, between the Kansas wind and the sound of his mother's voice saying I don't want to hear it.

He played until his fingers hurt. Then he prayed. Then he lay on his bed and stared at the ceiling and thought about what it meant to love a God who asked everything of you — not just your Sundays, not just your tithing, but your assumptions, your allegiances, your certainties — and to love a mother who asked you to be the thing you could not be.

The Bahá'í writings spoke of tests. Of difficulties as the means of spiritual growth. James understood this intellectually; his Faith was not naive. But there were mornings when understanding was thin comfort, when what he wanted was not growth but his mother's voice on the phone, saying his name the way she used to, saying James-baby, saying my son, saying come home.

Today he had four students. The first was Emily Farnsworth, age eleven, who was learning "Blackbird" by the Beatles and who attacked the guitar with a ferocity that James admired even as he gently corrected her grip. The second was Marco Gutierrez, age fourteen, who wanted to play electric guitar like his hero but was stuck on an acoustic because that was what his family could afford, and who James privately thought had genuine talent. The third was Bree Brewer, age fifteen, Tom and Linda's granddaughter, who had signed up for lessons at her grandmother's insistence and who approached the guitar with the same reluctant tolerance she brought to everything Linda suggested.

"I don't see why I need to learn guitar," Bree said, slouching in her chair. "I have Spotify."

"Spotify can't play a song that doesn't exist yet," James said. "You can."

Bree looked at him with the withering skepticism of the American teenager, but her fingers found the chord he'd shown her, and she strummed it, and something in her face shifted — just slightly, just for a moment — as the sound rang out.

His fourth student was Yusuf Al-Rashidi, age nine, Tariq and Fatima's eldest. Yusuf was small for his age and serious in a way that made James's chest hurt, because it was the seriousness of a child who had seen things no child should see. He had been three when his family fled Yemen. He did not remember the bombs, his parents said, but James sometimes wondered if the body remembered what the mind forgot.

Yusuf did not speak much. But he listened, and his fingers on the guitar strings were careful and precise, and when James played a simple melody and asked him to repeat it, he did so with an accuracy that was almost eerie.

"Good," James said. "That's really good, Yusuf."

Yusuf looked up at him with dark, steady eyes. "My baba likes music," he said. "In Yemen, he played the oud."

"Does he still play?"

Yusuf shook his head. "The oud stayed in Yemen."

James nodded. He understood about instruments left behind. His own mother's piano — the upright she had played every Sunday morning, hymns rising from the keys like steam — was still in her house in Cleveland, and he had not touched it in two years, because to touch it would be to touch her, and that was a bridge neither of them could cross right now.

After the lessons, James walked home in the late afternoon light, which in November meant near-darkness. The sky was a deepening blue, shot through with the last orange of sunset. He could see his breath. He could see the first stars.

But the Bahá'í Faith was not uncomplicated, and that was what he loved about it. It asked you to see the world as one. It asked you to see every person as a member of your family. It asked you to dismantle the walls inside yourself — the walls of race and culture and class and habit — and to stand, undefended, in the open space of unity.

It was terrifying. It was the most beautiful thing James had ever encountered.

He climbed the stairs to his apartment. He heated leftover soup. He sat at his small table by the window and ate, looking out at the street where a few cars moved slowly, their headlights tracing the ordinary movements of ordinary lives.

After dinner, he opened his prayer book to the evening prayers. He read them aloud, his voice the only sound in the apartment, the words filling the space the way music filled a room — not pushing out the silence but inhabiting it, giving it shape and meaning.

Then he picked up his phone. He scrolled to his mother's name. He pressed call.

It rang four times. Five. Six. He was about to hang up when she answered.

"James." Not James-baby. Not my son. Just James.

"Hey, Mama."

A pause. He could hear the television in the background — the evening news, the familiar cadence of disaster and weather.

"How are you?" he asked.

"I'm fine. My knee's acting up."

"Did you see Dr. Patterson?"

"I don't need to see Dr. Patterson. I need to lose twenty pounds. That's what your sister says."

"Keisha's not a doctor."

"Keisha has common sense, which is more than some people."

The dig was gentle, almost affectionate, and James held onto it the way a drowning man holds onto anything that floats. "Mama, I just wanted to hear your voice."

Another pause. Longer this time. He could hear her breathing, could almost see her sitting in her recliner, her reading glasses pushed up on her head, her Bible on the side table where it always was.

"Yes, Mama."

"Are you warm enough? Your brother says Kansas gets cold."

"I'm warm enough."

"Good. That's — good."

"Mama —"

"I have to go, James. Wheel of Fortune's on."

"Okay, Mama. I love you."

A silence that lasted an eternity, that lasted three seconds, that lasted exactly as long as the distance between Cleveland and Grainfield, Kansas.

"Goodnight, James," she said, and hung up.

He sat with the phone in his hand for a long time. She had not said I love you back. She had not said it in five months. But she had asked if he was eating. She had asked if he was warm.

In the vocabulary of Gloria Okafor, that was almost the same thing.

And outside, the Kansas wind moved across the plains, carrying nothing and everything, and the stars burned their ancient, indifferent, beautiful light, and somewhere in Cleveland a woman sat in her recliner and did not watch Wheel of Fortune but sat instead with her hand on her phone and her heart doing the painful, necessary work of learning to love a son she did not understand.

CHAPTER THREE (Narrated by Dale Henderson)

He lay in the dark beside Donna, listening to her breathe. She slept on her back now, something she'd started doing after her hip replacement two years ago, and her breathing had taken on a quality that was almost but not quite a snore — a soft, rhythmic hum, like a machine idling. He had mentioned it to her once, gently, and she had said, "Dale Henderson, if my breathing bothers you, you can sleep in the barn with the other animals," and that had been the end of that conversation.

"Sarah-jan! Come in. I have tea."

They sat in the kitchen and drank tea from small glass cups, the Iranian way, with sugar cubes held between the teeth. Sarah had learned this ritual as a child, at Maryam's table, and it was one of the things about the community that she loved without reservation — the way cultures mixed and shared, the way you could grow up in Kansas and know how to drink tea like an Iranian and eat hummus like a Yemeni and pray like a Bahá'í, which was to say like a citizen of everywhere.

She paused. "Not God. I never doubted God. But I doubted — how to say it — I doubted the plan. I doubted that there was a purpose to the suffering. I doubted that the world would ever be what the Writings said it could be."

"Yes," Tariq said. "Very cold."

This was the extent of their pre-shift conversation, and it suited Tariq. His English was adequate for the work — he could discuss grain grades and moisture levels and equipment maintenance with reasonable competence — but social conversation was harder, requiring not just vocabulary but nuance, humor, the ability to navigate the unspoken currents of American male interaction.

Tariq did not mind the cold. He minded other things — the distance from his family during the hours they were awake, the ache in his back from the lifting, the loneliness of the overnight hours — but the cold was just weather, and weather was something you endured, like everything else.

He had been a teacher in Yemen. This was the fact of his life that he carried like a stone in his pocket, heavy and smooth and always there. He had taught mathematics at a secondary school in Aden, and he had loved it — the elegance of equations, the satisfaction of leading a student from confusion to clarity, the authority of standing at a board and knowing, absolutely, what came next.

Here, he stood at a grain elevator and monitored moisture readings. The distance between the two occupations was not just geographical but existential — a gap so wide that Tariq sometimes could not see across it, could not connect the man he had been to the man he was.

"Yes," Tariq said, which was his response to most of Rick's stories.

"Anyway. How's your family? The kids doing okay?"

"Good, thank you. Yusuf is learning guitar."

"No kidding. My nephew plays guitar. Maybe they could jam sometime."

Tariq smiled. The thought of his solemn Yusuf "jamming" with anyone was endearing and implausible. "Maybe," he said.

At midnight, they took a break. Tariq ate the meal Fatima had prepared — rice and lamb, packed in a thermos that kept it warm — and sat in the break room, which was a windowless rectangle with a table and two chairs and a coffeemaker that produced liquid only charitably described as coffee.

He ate slowly, savoring the food, which tasted of Fatima's hands and of Aden and of a life that was both gone and ongoing. He thought about her, as he always did during the night shift — alone in the house with the children, managing everything, learning a new language, building a new life in a place that was as far from home as it was possible to be.

Fatima was stronger than he was. Tariq knew this with the clarity of a man who had spent fifteen years married to a woman who contained multitudes. She had carried the family through the worst of it — the flight, the camp, the resettlement — with a fierceness that left no room for collapse. She had collapsed later, in Chicago, in the small apartment where the walls closed in and the city noise never stopped, and Tariq had held her while she wept and had felt the terrible inadequacy of a man who could not fix the unfixable.

The move to Grainfield had helped. The space, the quiet, the community. But Fatima was still struggling, in the way that displacement was a struggle that never fully ended — it just changed shape, became less acute and more chronic, a low-grade fever of the soul.

He thought about the Feast. He had wanted to speak during the consultation — had wanted to say something about the children's classes, about the importance of including the refugee perspective, about the way his children were growing up between two worlds and needed bridges — but the words had not come. They were there, in Arabic, fully formed and eloquent, but the translation into English was a loss, a diminishment, and by the time he had assembled the sentence in his mind, the conversation had moved on.

Dale Henderson was helping. Tariq recognized this and was grateful. The Saturday mornings at the farm, working alongside Dale with the cattle, had become a space where words were less important than actions, where the shared labor was its own language. Dale showed him how to check the cattle's hooves, how to mix the feed, how to read the weather by the behavior of the cows. Then he went back to work, because the grain would not monitor itself, and the night was long, and there was still the matter of Silo 7's temperature, which was two degrees higher than he liked, and the truck that was coming at five a.m. for the load of corn bound for the feed lot in Dodge City.

He worked. He checked. He adjusted. He waited. The hours moved with the particular slowness of night hours, each minute heavier than its daytime counterpart, each hour a test of endurance and attention.

At four a.m., Dean appeared beside him at the monitoring station. Dean, who rarely spoke, said, "Good night for stars."

"Yes," Tariq said.

"You ever see stars like this back home?"

"No. In Yemen, too many lights in the city."

Dean nodded. "I grew up on a farm, twenty miles from here. Whole life in Kansas. Never get tired of the stars."

He put his arm around her and felt her warmth and smelled the soap she used and the faint trace of za'atar that clung to her from the kitchen.

"Was it a good night?" she murmured.

"Quiet. The stars were beautiful."

"Go to sleep, habibi."

He closed his eyes. The day was beginning for everyone else, but for Tariq, the night's work was done, and the day was for sleeping, and he slept, and the house held him, and the plains held the house, and the sky held it all — the enormous, star-filled, indifferent, beautiful sky.

Tom Brewer believed that God spoke through soil.

This was not a metaphor, or not entirely. Tom understood that God spoke through scripture and prayer and the Writings of the Faith and the quiet voice of the conscience. Tom Brewer was seventy years old, lean as a fence post, with a face that looked like it had been carved by the wind, which it had. He had farmed this land for forty-eight years, since he was twenty-two and his father had said, "Well, Tom, the land's yours now. Don't mess it up." His father had said this not because he was unkind but because he was a Kansas farmer, and Kansas farmers did not waste words on what could be conveyed by a nod and a handshake.

Tom had not messed it up. He had expanded the operation from three hundred acres to four hundred and fifty. He had survived droughts, floods, a tornado that took the barn in 1989, the farm crisis of the 1980s that took his neighbors on both sides, and the slow, grinding consolidation of American agriculture that had turned farming from a way of life into a form of corporate enterprise.

He had survived, but the cost was visible in the lines on his face and the ache in his knees and the bankruptcy that had nearly taken the farm in 1993 and that Linda never talked about and that Tom thought about every time he looked at a bank statement.

"Hey, Bree-bird."

She rolled her eyes at the nickname but the corner of her mouth twitched. Tom counted this as a victory.

"What's the homework?"

"Biology. The nitrogen cycle."

Tom's face lit up. "The nitrogen cycle! Now there's something I know about. You know, the way nitrogen moves through the soil is —"

"Grandpa. I don't need a lecture. I need to finish this worksheet."

"Right. Right." He sat down across from her. "But if you want to know how it works in real life — not just in a textbook but in the actual ground —"

Bree looked at him. The look was half-exasperation, half-something-else — something softer, something that lived behind the teenage armor and that Tom cherished because it was proof that the girl he loved was still in there, beneath the fury and the phone.

"You must teach me to make that hummus," Donna said. "The one you brought to Feast."

"I will teach you. But you must use much garlic. Tariq says too much, but there is no such thing."

"Agreed. Dale's the same way about onions. Puts them in everything."

They smiled at each other across the table, two women separated by forty years, ten thousand miles, two languages, and two entirely different experiences of the world, connected by the simple fact of sitting together and sharing tea.

Then Donna took a breath and said the thing she had been wanting to say. "Fatima, I have an idea. And you can say no. I won't be offended."

Fatima was quiet for a long moment. Omar had abandoned the blocks and was pulling himself up on a chair leg, his face set with determination. Fatima watched him, and Donna watched her, and the kitchen was quiet except for Omar's small, effortful grunts and the tick of the clock on the wall.

“Therefore, in this organic, divinely guided, blessed and illumined body the participation of every believer is of the utmost importance, and is a source of power and vitality as yet unknown to us.” Fatima said, "I helped with the children's classes. At our center. I taught stories from the Writings. The children — they liked my stories." She paused. “Thou beholdest the Lord of all mankind confined in His Most Great Prison, calling aloud Thy Name, gazing upon Thy face, proclaiming that which hath enraptured the denizens of Thy kingdoms of revelation and of creation.”

““The perpetuation of ignorance”, the House of Justice has stated, “is a most grievous form of oppression; it reinforces the many walls of prejudice that stand as barriers to the realization of the oneness of humankind….”

"But what if I make mistakes? What if I say the wrong word?"

"Then the children will correct you and everyone will laugh and it will be the best lesson they ever had."

Fatima looked at Donna. Her eyes were bright — not with tears, exactly, but with something that lived in the territory between tears and joy. "You are sure?"

"I'm sure."

"Then — yes. I will try."

They finished their tea. Donna drove Fatima and Omar home, and on the way, Fatima said, "Donna."

"Hmm?"

"Thank you. Not just for the tea. For — for seeing me."

Donna pulled into the driveway of the rental house and put the car in park. She looked at Fatima — this young Yemeni mother, this refugee, this woman who had traveled so far and lost so much and who was, every day, doing the brave and exhausting work of beginning again — and she said, "Honey, that's the easy part. You're hard to miss."

She drove home in the early dark, the headlights carving the road, the fields invisible in the November night. At home, Dale was in his chair by the window, reading his prayer book, and Donna sat down beside him and said, "Fatima's going to teach the children's class."

Dale looked up. "Good."

"She was afraid. But she said yes."

"Brave woman."

"They're all brave. Every one of them. Coming to this place, building a life. It's the bravest thing I've ever seen."

She looked out the window at the dark. Somewhere out there, Fatima was putting her children to bed. Maryam was sitting with her oranges and her grief and her stubborn, beautiful persistence. Sarah was at her desk, wrestling with questions that would make her stronger. Pat was making her lists.

And Donna was here, in this old house with its complaining pipes and its stories in the walls, with Dale beside her and the prayer book open and the land outside holding its seeds in the dark.

Day ten. Halfway there. Halfway to the next gathering, the next Feast, the next chance to sit in a room together and be the improbable, beautiful thing they were.

CHAPTER ELEVEN (Narrated by Bree Brewer)

Bree Brewer was fifteen years old and she hated everything.

Okay, not everything. She didn't hate her grandparents, though she hated the way they looked at her — that hopeful, worried look, like she was a plant they weren't sure was going to make it. She didn't hate her room at the farmhouse, which was bigger than any room she'd ever had and which she had decorated with band posters and fairy lights that Grandma Linda called "a fire hazard." She didn't hate the farm itself, though she'd die before admitting this, because there was something about the openness of it, the way you could see for miles in every direction, that made the tightness in her chest a little less tight.

But she hated a lot of things. She hated being fifteen. She hated living in a town where the most exciting thing that ever happened was the annual chili cook-off. She hated the fact that her father, Ryan, was in a facility in Wichita and she hadn't seen him in four months. She hated that her mother, a woman named Crystal whom Bree hadn't seen in three years, lived in Oregon and communicated exclusively through birthday cards that arrived late and contained twenty-dollar bills, as though Bree's entire childhood could be compensated at a rate of twenty dollars per year.

And she hated — or thought she hated — the Bahá'í stuff. The Feasts and the prayers and the community events that her grandparents dragged her to with the cheerful determination of people who believed that spiritual exposure was, like chicken pox, best acquired young.

She had not been practicing the chord progression. She had been watching YouTube videos of people playing guitar, which was not the same thing as playing guitar, in the same way that watching cooking shows was not the same thing as cooking, but which felt, in the moment, like sufficient effort.

She got up. She dressed. She went downstairs, where Grandma Linda had already made oatmeal and was engaged in a losing battle to convince Grandpa Tom that he could not bring dirt into the kitchen on his boots, a battle that had been ongoing for as long as Bree had lived here, which was three years, which felt like a century.

"Morning, Bree-bird," Grandpa Tom said.

"Morning." She sat down and poked at the oatmeal. "Can I have toast instead?"

"You can have toast in addition to the oatmeal," Linda said, which was Grandma-speak for No.

Bree ate the oatmeal. It was good, actually — Linda's oatmeal was always good, loaded with brown sugar and raisins and a warmth that was more than just temperature — but Bree would not admit this, because admitting that your grandmother's oatmeal was good was somehow a concession, an acknowledgment that this life, this farmhouse life, was acceptable, and Bree was not ready to make that concession.

The school bus came at seven-fifteen. Bree rode it with the other rural kids — a collection of farm children and townies who sorted themselves by age and social standing into the bus's informal hierarchy. Bree sat in the middle, which was the territory of the neither-popular-nor-unpopular, the invisible middle, and she was fine with this. Invisibility had its advantages.

School was school. She moved through classes with the minimum effort required to maintain the B-minus average that her grandparents found acceptable and her father, in his better days, had said was "not reaching your potential, Bree-bird." Her potential was a concept that other people believed in more than she did. Her potential was a room she had been told existed but had never been able to find.

At lunch, she sat with Madison and their friend Sophia, and they talked about Tyler's Instagram post and a party this weekend that Bree already knew her grandparents wouldn't let her attend and about the general, overwhelming unfairness of being fifteen in a town that might as well have been the moon for all the excitement it offered.

"At least you have the farm," Madison said, in the envious tone of a girl who lived in a subdivision and thought rural life was romantic. "It's so aesthetic."

"It's a farm," Bree said. "It smells like cow."

"Yeah, but like, in a cute way."

Bree rolled her eyes. Nothing about cow smell was cute. But there was, she conceded privately, something about the farm that she couldn't find anywhere else — a quality of realness, of substance, of things being exactly what they appeared to be. The cows were cows. The dirt was dirt. The fence was a fence. In a world that increasingly felt like a performance — like everyone was playing a part and no one was real — the farm was stubbornly, irrefutably actual.

After school, the bus dropped her at the end of the driveway and she walked to the house, her backpack heavy, her mood heavier. She had a biology test tomorrow and a guitar lesson on Thursday and a Bahá'í youth group meeting this weekend that she was dreading with the anticipatory dread of a person who would rather do almost anything than sit in a circle and talk about their feelings.

She let herself into the house. Grandma Linda was out — her car wasn't in the drive — and Grandpa Tom was somewhere on the farm, invisible, as he often was, absorbed into the land he loved the way water was absorbed into soil.

Bree dropped her backpack in the hall and went to the kitchen for a snack. She ate an apple and three cookies (Linda's peanut butter, the good ones) and stood at the kitchen window and looked out at nothing.

Then she went upstairs to her room and took out the guitar.

It was not her guitar. It was a loaner from the community center, an old acoustic with a dent in the body and strings that needed replacing. James had said she could use it until she decided whether she wanted to continue lessons, and Bree had taken it home with the assumption that it would sit in the corner and collect dust.

She played it again. And again. And then she tried the next chord — C major — and the shift from minor to major was like a door opening, like stepping from a dark room into light, and something in Bree's chest moved, a feeling she didn't have a name for and that frightened her a little.

She put the guitar down. She opened her biology textbook. She tried to study the nitrogen cycle, but her mind kept returning to the chord — A minor, C major, the movement from rain to light — and to something Grandpa Tom had said yesterday about nitrogen and the soil and how nothing grew alone.

"Where did you leave it?"

"I don't know."

"That's the problem, isn't it?"

They found the shoe under the couch. They found Laleh's jacket in the bathroom. They found Nadia's car keys in the pocket of yesterday's coat. The morning was a scavenger hunt of lost items, and by the time Nadia had both children in the car, buckled and fed and more or less presentable, she was already tired, and the day had barely begun.

She drove Arash to school and Laleh to preschool and then sat in the car in the preschool parking lot for three minutes, her hands on the steering wheel, her eyes closed, breathing.

Nadia Shahidi. Thirty-four years old. Married to Reza, Maryam's son, who traveled for work — pharmaceutical sales — and who was gone three weeks out of four. Mother of two. Daughter-in-law to a grieving woman. Member of the Bahá'í community of Grainfield. Volunteer for everything. Saying no to nothing.

She was tired. Not the normal tired of parenthood, though that was part of it. A deeper tired. A tired that lived in her bones and her blood and that no amount of sleep — not that she was getting much — could touch.

She tried to feel the burning. What she felt was the slow, steady ache of a flame that had been burning for a long time, that had been burning without refueling, that was not in danger of going out but was getting dangerously low.

But tonight, she slept. And in the other rooms, her children breathed their small, perfect breaths, and the house was quiet, and the night was long, and Nadia Shahidi, committee of one, dreamed of a morning when she would wake up and the list would be short and the children would be grown and Reza would be home and the silence would be the good kind — the kind that came from peace rather than from exhaustion.

There was his care — the medications, the doctor's appointments, the monitoring of a heart that the doctors said was weakening and that Maryam had thought was the strongest heart in the world. There was the household — the cooking, the cleaning, the maintenance of a life shared with another person. "It's there. I'm working on something new. I can't quite — it's not ready yet."

Maryam smiled. "No. He said, 'Maryam, this tea is too strong.' But the principle is the same."

"I called my mother last night," James said.

Maryam set down her fork. "And?"

"She asked if I was eating. She asked if I was warm."

"That is progress."

"Is it?"

"You sound like the Writings."

“Thou art the Lord of loving-kindness, we are sinners and astray and far from home.”

James looked at her with those eyes — those earnest, hopeful, heartbroken eyes — and Maryam thought of her own son, Reza, who was somewhere in another state selling pharmaceuticals and calling Nadia every night and being a good man in the way that good men were sometimes invisible. She thought of Arash, her grandson, who was seven and who had Hossein's ears and Reza's smile and who asked for cookies at Feast. James looked at the guitar, then at her. "I wrote it for you," he said. "I mean — not intentionally. But I think it's about — it's about what you're going through. Loss and continuing. Grief and — the morning after grief."

Maryam reached across the table and put her hand on his. "Then it is for both of us," she said. "Because you are grieving too, James. You are grieving your mother, even though she is alive. And that is its own kind of loss."

The silence that followed was not empty but full — full of understanding, full of the recognition that loneliness shared was loneliness halved, or at least transformed, made bearable by the simple fact of not being alone with it.

Emily attacked her lesson with her usual ferocity, which James channeled into dynamics — the art of playing softly as well as loudly, of letting the music breathe.

"But I want it to be loud," Emily said.

"Loud is good. But silence is also part of the music. The notes only matter because of the spaces between them."

Emily looked skeptical but tried it anyway, and when the quiet note emerged from between the loud ones, she made a face of surprise that was pure and involuntary and that James would remember for a long time.

Then Yusuf. Quiet, serious Yusuf, who came into the room the way he did everything — carefully, as though the floor might shift beneath him.

He read about the power of music to uplift the spirit, to express what words could not, to serve as a ladder between the earthly and the divine.

He thought about Yusuf, and the moment when the melody had changed. That was what he wanted his song to do — not just to express grief or hope but to create a space where the listener could feel both at once, where the distance between sorrow and joy collapsed and what remained was something raw and true and essentially human.

Every morning is a door. Every prayer is a step through. I don't know what's on the other side but I know I'm going with you.

Marcus opened the meeting with a prayer, as was the custom, and then turned to Pat. "Secretary, the agenda?"

Pat distributed copies. She had made nine, because she always made nine, even though Harold never looked at his and Donna immediately used hers as a coaster.

"Four items tonight. Children's classes update, newsletter discussion, the race unity study circle proposal from Marcus, and community finances."

The children's classes were going well. Fatima had taught her first class — Donna reported this with the pride of a woman who had made it happen — and the response had been enthusiastic. Sarah would take weekends. The gap was filled.

"How is Fatima doing?" Felicia asked.

"I have things to say too," Maryam said. "In Iran, as Bahá'ís, we were a minority. We know what prejudice feels like. It wears different clothes in different places, but the fabric is the same."

James was quiet. Then he said, "I've been waiting for this. I didn't know I was waiting, but I was. Being the only Black man in this community — it's not a burden, exactly, but it's a weight. And I've never felt like I could talk about it. Not because anyone would be unkind, but because — I didn't want to make people uncomfortable."

"Make us uncomfortable," Marcus said. "That's what the study circle is for."

Harold Kim spoke for the first time that evening. "I am Korean," he said. "I came to this country forty years ago. I have been comfortable for a long time. Too comfortable, maybe. I think discomfort is necessary for growth."

They voted. The proposal passed unanimously. The study circle would begin in January, in Marcus's living room, every other Sunday.

The meeting ended at nine-thirty. I came to this table with empty hands and left with more than I could carry. I came to this room where the strangers sat and found they were not strangers at all.

Every morning is a door. Every prayer is a step through. I don't know what's on the other side but I know I'm going with you.

Every morning is a door. Every prayer is a step through. I don't know what's on the other side but I know I'm going with you.

When the song ended, the room was silent. Then Donna wiped her eyes and said, "James Okafor, you are going to make me cry in front of all these people," and everyone laughed, and the laughter was the kind that held tears inside it, like a shell holding the sea.

The devotional portion ended. Marcus moved to the consultation.

"The floor is open," he said. "What's on your hearts?"

The consultation was different tonight. Maryam could feel it — a quality of openness, of willingness, that had not been there nineteen days ago. Perhaps it was the song. Perhaps it was the accumulation of the month's days — the small acts of connection, the quiet crises met and addressed, the slow work of learning to be a community rather than merely a collection of individuals.

Fatima spoke. She spoke in her careful English, and when the English failed her, she spoke in Arabic, and Maryam translated, and the room listened with the particular attention you give to someone who is crossing a bridge to reach you.

Donna wept openly. Dale blinked rapidly. Pat wrote it down. Marcus nodded, his face showing the quiet, deep satisfaction of a man who had spent his life planting trees and was, just for a moment, allowed to see the shade.

Sarah spoke. "I've been struggling this month," she said. "With doubt. With whether the Faith is really mine or just something I inherited. And I want to be honest about that, because I think honesty is more important than certainty." She paused. "I don't have answers yet. But I'm here. And being here — in this room, with all of you — that feels like something. That feels like enough."

Maryam looked at Sarah and felt the thin thread of peace she had found at the last Feast thicken, strengthen, become a cord. "It is enough, Sarah-jan," she said. "It is more than enough."

Nadia spoke. "I asked for help this month," she said. "At the Assembly meeting. And you all — every one of you — you helped. You showed up. And I realized that asking for help is not weakness. It's — it's the whole point. We're supposed to need each other. That's why we gather."

Tom spoke about cover crops and the spiritual life and how the soil was a teacher, and Pat did not interrupt him, and the room listened, and Tom's face was luminous with the joy of a man who was finally being heard.

Marcus spoke last. "I want to share something with the community," he said. "At our last Assembly meeting, we approved a race unity study circle, to begin in January. This is important work — difficult work — and I want to invite every one of you to participate. Not because it will be easy, but because the hard conversations are the ones that matter most. The Bahá'í Faith asks us to build a world where the oneness of humanity is not just a belief but a reality. And that starts here, in this room, with the willingness to be honest with each other across every line that divides us."

He paused and looked around the room — at Dale, at James, at Fatima, at Maryam, at Harold, at Felicia, at all of them, this improbable assembly of souls who had gathered in a living room in the middle of Kansas to do the ancient, impossible, necessary work of becoming one.

"The earth is but one country," he said, quoting the words that had first drawn him to the Faith, "and mankind its citizens."

The consultation ended. The social portion began.

And now Maryam watched. She watched from her station by the roses — the perfect, upright roses — and she saw what she had seen nineteen days ago but saw it differently, because she was different, because the month had changed her, as months do, as days do, as the slow accumulation of lived experience changes us all.

She saw James playing his guitar softly in the corner, and Yusuf standing beside him, watching his fingers on the strings with an intensity that was not observation but apprenticeship. She saw Bree standing near them, not participating but not retreating, her body language a negotiation between the desire to be invisible and the desire to be seen.

She saw Dale and Tariq sitting side by side, eating and talking — Dale's slow English and Tariq's careful English meeting somewhere in the middle, in the territory of work and weather and the universal language of men who understood land.

She saw Donna and Fatima in the kitchen, washing dishes together, Donna talking and Fatima listening and both of them laughing about something Maryam couldn't hear, and she knew that the something was not important — that what mattered was the laughing, the side-by-side-ness, the intimacy of women working together in a kitchen, which was the oldest form of community there was.

She saw Sarah and Nadia talking quietly in the corner, the young woman and the young mother, Sarah listening with the attentiveness of someone who was learning that faith was not about having answers but about being willing to sit with the questions.

She saw Marcus standing by the window, looking out at the dark, and she saw on his face the expression of a man who was carrying many things — the community, the study circle, the memory of an email from an ex-wife — but who was, tonight, carrying them with grace.

She saw all of them, and she saw Hossein's absence among them, the space where he would have been, the chair he would have sat in, the jokes he would have made, the tea he would have poured. The absence was there, and it would always be there, and it was a part of the community now, woven into its fabric, a thread of grief running alongside all the other threads — of joy, of doubt, of faith, of the ordinary daily effort of loving people who were different from you.

Arash appeared at her elbow. "Mama Maryam, there are cookies."

"I see that."

"The ones with almonds. Sarah's mom made them."

"Would you like me to get you one?"

"I already had three." He held up three fingers for emphasis, in case the numerical claim required visual support. "But maybe one more?"

"One more," she said. "And then you must share with your sister."

He ran off, and Maryam watched him go — this small boy, this grandson, this proof that the world continued, that the love she and Hossein had built had not ended with Hossein but had flowed forward, into Reza and Nadia and Arash and Laleh, into the community that held them, into the future they were making, one day at a time.

The evening wound down. The goodbyes began — slow, warm, the particular Bahá'í goodbye that was never quite a goodbye but always a see-you-soon. Nineteen days until the next Feast. Nineteen days to live through, to work through, to pray through, to carry each other through.

James was the last to leave. He stood at the door with his guitar case and said, "Mama Maryam, thank you for the roses."

"They stood up straight tonight," she said.

"Maybe they heard the song."

She laughed. "Maybe they did."

He bent and kissed her cheek, and she put her hand on his face, and for a moment, they stood there — the old woman and the young man, the widow and the son who was not her son but who she loved as though he were — and the touch was a conversation, and the conversation was about all the things they had spoken of in the past nineteen days and all the things they had not, and it was enough.

He left. The room was empty. Donna and Dale were in the kitchen, putting the last dishes away. Maryam stood among the folding chairs and the emptied plates and the roses in their vase and she felt — not happiness, exactly, and not peace, exactly, but something that lived in the territory where happiness and peace and grief and hope all met, a place without a name in any language but that she recognized, because she had been visiting it, day by day, for nineteen days, and she was beginning to understand that this was where she lived now — in the space between loss and love, in the gap between what was and what could be, in the nineteen days between one gathering and the next.

Nadia drove her home. The children slept in the backseat, as they had nineteen days ago, the repetition a comfort, a proof of continuity.

"Maman," Nadia said. "You read tonight. You read the prayer."

"I did."

"It was beautiful."

"It was shaky."

"Shaky can be beautiful."

Maryam looked out the window at the dark, the same dark she had looked at nineteen days ago, the dark that was not empty but full — full of stars and sleeping fields and the quiet presence of all the people she loved, scattered across this small town, breathing and dreaming and carrying their separate stories toward the next gathering, the next Feast, the next chance to sit in a room together and be the thing they were.

Nadia pulled into the driveway. The porch light was on.

"Goodnight, Maman."

"Goodnight, Nadia-jan." Maryam paused with her hand on the door. "Nadia."

"Yes?"

"Thank you for asking for help. That was brave."

Nadia smiled. "I learned from you."

"I never asked for help."

"I know. That's how I learned."

Maryam laughed — a real laugh, the kind that came from the belly, the kind she had thought she might never laugh again — and she got out of the car and walked up the path and unlocked the door and stepped into the warm, quiet, empty house that was hers.

She went to the kitchen. She made tea. She sat at the table and drank it, and the table had two chairs, and one was empty, and the emptiness was there, and it would always be there, but tonight it was not a void. Tonight it was a space — a space that had been filled, today and every day of this month, by the hands and voices and hearts of the people who loved her.

She washed the teacup. She turned off the kitchen light. She walked to the bedroom and changed into her nightgown and sat on the edge of the bed and opened her prayer book.

"Consort with the followers of all religions in a spirit of friendliness and fellowship."

She had done this. Imperfectly, incompletely, as all human efforts were imperfect and incomplete. But she had done it. She had sat in a room with people of every background and she had listened and spoken and eaten and prayed and laughed and wept, and the sitting and the listening and the speaking and the eating and the praying and the laughing and the weeping were the practice, the daily practice, and the practice was the path, and the path was the point.

She closed the prayer book. She turned off the light. She lay in the dark and said, as she did every night, "Goodnight, Hossein."

And she meant it — everyone. The whole community. The whole town. The whole country that was all countries, the whole humanity that was one humanity, the whole broken, beautiful, stumbling, hoping world.

She left the porch light on.

CHAPTER TWENTY (Narrated by the Community)

The twentieth day was not part of the Bahá'í month. It was the first day of the next month — the month of Masa'il, Questions — and it belonged to no one and everyone, which made it the right day for an ending that was also a beginning.

In the morning, Maryam woke and made tea and stood at the window and saw that it had snowed in the night — the first real snow of the season, a thin white blanket that transformed the brown world into something luminous and new.

She called Nadia. "Have you seen the snow?"

"Arash is already outside. He's making a snowman with one arm."

"Tell him snowmen need two arms."

"I told him. He says this one is special."

Maryam laughed and hung up and drank her tea and thought about the day ahead.

James woke and prayed and went to the window and saw the snow. He picked up his guitar and played the song — the one he had played at Feast, the one that was true — and the music mixed with the morning light and the white world outside, and he felt, for the first time in a long time, that he was exactly where he was supposed to be.

I looked up that Faith of yours online. I don't understand it. But your brother says the song you wrote is beautiful. He heard you play it on a video call with your sister. When are you coming home for Christmas?

I'll be there, Mama. I'll bring my guitar.

He pressed send and sat with the phone in his hand and felt the world shift, just slightly, like a key turning in a lock, like a yes.

Dale and Donna woke to the snow and drank their coffee and read their prayers and Dale went to the barn and Donna went to the kitchen and they moved through the morning with the practiced grace of people who had been doing this for forty-five years and who would do it for as many more as they were given.

Fatima woke to the snow and thought of rain — because in Yemen, precipitation was not snow but rain, and rain was rare and precious and celebrated, and she had not yet learned to celebrate snow, but she was learning. She was learning everything, every day, one word at a time.

Tariq slept beside her, having come home from the night shift an hour ago, his body warm and present, and the children were stirring in their rooms, and the house was not home but it was the place where they were building a home, and the building was its own form of prayer.

Marcus woke and looked at the snow and thought about roots beneath the surface, working in the dark.

He thought about the email from Charlene and the coffee they would have on Thursday and the uncertainty of what it meant and the willingness to find out.

He thought about the study circle and the conversations that would come — difficult, necessary, the kind of conversations that a community needed to have in order to be more than a collection of individuals.

He got up. He made coffee. He drove to school.

Sarah woke in her childhood bedroom and looked at the ceiling and thought about the Feast, about James's song, about Maryam's hands on her tea cup, about the moment when she had stood up and said, I don't have answers yet, but I'm here.

She opened her prayer book. She read. The words were the same words she had read a thousand times, but today they were not invisible. Today they were vivid and alive, like the snow on the ground, like the first green shoots of winter wheat, like a song heard for the first time.

She didn't know if she believed. She didn't know if the Faith was hers. But she knew she was part of something — this community, these people, this imperfect, stubborn, beautiful practice of sitting in a room together and trying to understand.

And that was not certainty. But it was a start.

Bree woke and, before she reached for her phone, she reached for the guitar.

She played A minor. Then C major. The movement from rain to light. She played it again, and again, and each time, the chord rang a little cleaner, a little truer, and something in her chest opened a little wider.

She didn't call it prayer. She didn't call it faith. She didn't call it anything at all, because she was fifteen and she didn't have words for it yet. But she had the chord, and the chord had her, and the morning light on the snow was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.

And Maryam — Maryam stood at her kitchen window and watched the snow and drank her tea and thought about the nineteen days that had passed and the nineteen days that were beginning and the nineteen days after that, stretching forward into a future she could not see but that she trusted was there, because the roses had stood up straight, and the song had been beautiful, and the community had gathered, and the porch light was still on, and the earth was one country, and she was still here.

She was still here.

And that was everything.
