When Grandpa moved to the small apartment, he said Lily could have anything from his attic. "Pick whatever speaks to you," he said.

Lily climbed the creaky stairs. The attic was dusty and dim, full of boxes and furniture draped in old sheets. She found a rocking horse with a cracked nose, a stack of records with no player, and a set of chipped teacups that might have been fancy once.

Then she found the music box.

It was wooden, about the size of a thick book, with a brass clasp and a pattern of flowers carved into the lid. When Lily opened it, it played a melody she didn't recognize — high and tinkling and sad and beautiful all at once.

"Grandpa! What's this?"

Grandpa climbed the stairs slowly — his knees weren't what they used to be. He took the box and his face changed. Not sad, exactly. More like remembering something that was both happy and far away.

"This was your grandmother's," he said. "She brought it from Japan when she came to America. It plays a song called 'Sakura' — it's about cherry blossoms."

"Can I keep it?"

Grandpa placed it in her hands carefully. "She would have wanted you to have it."

Lily took the music box to school for show-and-tell.

"It plays a Japanese song called 'Sakura,'" she told the class. "My grandmother brought it from Japan."

She wound the little key and opened the lid. The melody floated through the classroom — delicate notes like tiny bells.

The room went quiet. Not the usual show-and-tell quiet, where kids are thinking about what they'll say when it's their turn. Real quiet. Listening quiet.

When the song ended, Ms. Rivera said, "That's lovely, Lily. Does anyone else have something musical from their family?"

A boy named Felix raised his hand. "My abuela has a guitar from Mexico. She plays it every Sunday."

A girl named Kira said, "My mom has a drum from Nigeria. It's called a djembe."

A boy named Amir said, "My dad plays the oud. It's like a guitar but different. He plays songs from Lebanon."

Lily looked around the room. So many families. So many instruments. So many songs she'd never heard.

"What if we heard them all?" she said.

Ms. Rivera loved the idea. "A family music concert! Each family shares a song or instrument from their culture."

Not everyone was excited. Felix said his abuela was shy. Kira said her mom was busy. Amir said his dad would only play at home, never in front of strangers.

"They don't have to play in front of strangers," Lily said. "They'd be playing for us. And we're not strangers. We're a class."

It took two weeks of convincing. Lily called Felix's abuela herself (in English, because her Spanish was limited to "hola" and "por favor") and told her the class really wanted to hear her guitar. Felix translated. His abuela laughed and said yes.

Kira's mom agreed after Kira played the "it's for school" card, which apparently worked on all parents everywhere. Amir's dad agreed after Amir promised he wouldn't have to talk — just play.

Seven families signed up. The concert was set for Friday after lunch.

The families came on Thursday to practice in the empty gym.

It was the most unusual rehearsal Lily had ever seen. Felix's abuela tuned her guitar and strummed a few chords — warm, rolling, full of sunshine. Kira's mom set up her djembe and played a rhythm that made Lily's feet want to move. Amir's dad sat in a corner with his oud and played something so beautiful that everyone stopped talking and just listened.

Then there was Mr. O'Brien, who played the tin whistle — Irish music, quick and lively, like a river over rocks. And Mrs. Kim, who played a gayageum — a long Korean stringed instrument that she placed across her lap and plucked with delicate fingers, producing sounds that were both ancient and completely new.

Lily's grandpa had come too. He didn't play an instrument, but he'd brought the music box. "It's the only Japanese music I have," he said apologetically. "Your grandmother was the musician. I was just the audience."

"The audience is important too," Ms. Rivera said.

They ran through the program once. Each family played their piece, and between each one, there was a moment of silence — the kind of silence that comes when something beautiful has just happened and you need a moment to absorb it.

"It sounds like the world," Lily said.

And it did. Right there in the school gym, with seven families playing seven different instruments from seven different countries, it sounded like the whole world, gathered in one room, singing.

Friday. Gym. Folding chairs. The whole school packed in.

Lily was nervous. What if nobody liked the music? What if the kids got bored? What if someone laughed at the instruments they didn't recognize?

Felix's abuela went first. She played a Mexican folk song — "Cielito Lindo" — and by the second verse, half the school was clapping along. The gym sounded like a party.

Kira's mom played the djembe next. She started slow, a steady heartbeat rhythm, then built and built until the whole gym was vibrating. Kids stamped their feet. Teachers tapped their hands. Coach Davis, who had never shown enthusiasm for anything except dodgeball, was drumming on his knees.

Mr. O'Brien played his tin whistle, and the music was so fast and playful that several kids started dancing in the aisles. Mrs. Kim played the gayageum, and the gym went still — the notes were so pure and unexpected that even the kindergartners stopped fidgeting.

Amir's dad played the oud. He played a traditional Lebanese song, and his fingers moved so quickly on the strings that Lily could barely see them. The music was complex and emotional and unlike anything most of the kids had ever heard. When he finished, there was a pause — one perfect beat of silence — and then the gym exploded in applause.

Last was Grandpa with the music box. He walked to the front of the gym, placed the small wooden box on a table, wound the key, and opened the lid.

The melody of "Sakura" floated through the gym — tiny, delicate, impossibly beautiful against the silence of three hundred listening children.

When the last note faded, nobody spoke. Then a kindergartner in the front row said, very quietly, "That was the prettiest thing I ever heard."

Grandpa smiled. Lily cried a little. And the whole school clapped, not just for the music box but for all of it — the guitar and the drum and the whistle and the gayageum and the oud and the melody from Japan, carried across an ocean in a wooden box by a woman who had wanted her music to live on.

The concert changed things at school.

Kids started talking about music — not just pop music or video game soundtracks, but the music their families had brought from other places. A first-grader brought in a recording of Chinese opera. A third-grader brought a pair of maracas from Puerto Rico. A fifth-grader showed the class beatboxing, which he said was its own kind of cultural instrument.

Ms. Rivera started a "Music of the World" segment every Friday — five minutes at the end of the day when a student could share a song or instrument or recording from their family's culture. The segment was so popular that other classes started doing it too.

"Music is brave," she told Grandpa one afternoon, winding the music box for the hundredth time.

"Music IS brave," Grandpa agreed. "Your grandmother always said that singing was the bravest thing a person could do. Because when you sing, you're showing people your heart."

"Did Grandma sing?"

"All the time. In Japanese, in English, in the shower, in the garden, in the car. She sang to you too, when you were a baby. You were only six months old, but she sang to you every day. 'Sakura,' mostly."

"I don't remember."

"You don't need to remember. The song is in you. That's how music works — it gets into your bones and stays there, whether you know it or not."

Lily opened the music box and listened to the melody. She didn't remember her grandmother's voice. But she could feel the song — somewhere deep, somewhere below memory, in the place where love lives after the person who gave it to you is gone.

Lily had one more idea.

She got a big map of the world — the kind that takes up a whole wall — and hung it in the school hallway. Then she put pins on the map for every country represented by the music they'd shared.

Mexico. Nigeria. Lebanon. Ireland. Korea. Japan. Puerto Rico. China.

She added a card next to each pin, describing the instrument or song and the family who shared it. The Music Map became a living display — every time a new piece of music was shared in Friday's segment, a new pin went on the map with a new card.

"Look at all those pins," the principal said, standing in front of the map with her arms crossed and a proud expression. "That's our school."

"That's our world," Lily corrected.

On the last day of school, Lily brought the music box to class one final time.

She wound the key and opened the lid. "Sakura" played its tinkling melody, and the class listened the way they always did — quietly, completely, as if the music was a secret being whispered just for them.

When the song ended, Lily closed the box and held it for a moment. Then she walked to Ms. Rivera's desk.

"I want the music box to stay in the classroom," she said. "Not forever. Just for next year. So the next class can hear it. And the class after that. And the one after that."

"Are you sure?" Ms. Rivera asked. "It was your grandmother's."

"That's why I'm sure. Grandma brought this music from Japan because she wanted it to be heard. Not just by our family. By everyone. Music isn't supposed to stay in a box."

Ms. Rivera placed the music box on the shelf above the reading corner, where it would catch the afternoon light. "I'll take good care of it."

"Play it for the next new kid," Lily said. "The one who's nervous and doesn't know anyone yet. Play it on their first day. It'll help."

She walked out of the classroom and into the sunshine. Behind her, through the open window, she could hear Ms. Rivera winding the key. The melody of "Sakura" drifted through the air — out the window, over the playground, into the sky.

A song from Japan, carried across the ocean in a wooden box, played in a school in America, heard by children from everywhere.

Music doesn't stay in boxes. It doesn't stay in countries. It travels, the way all beautiful things travel — freely, endlessly, landing wherever there are ears to hear it and hearts to hold it.

Lily walked home, humming "Sakura." She didn't know all the notes. She didn't need to. The song was in her bones.
