The bakery was called Sunrise Bread because Mama started baking before the sun came up. By the time the sky turned pink, the front window was already foggy with the warm breath of loaves, and the small bell over the door was already jingling for its first customer of the day.

Rumi and Tahirih lived in the little apartment above the bakery. The floor of their bedroom was also the ceiling of the kitchen, so when Mama was kneading dough, they could hear the soft thump, thump, thump of her hands beneath them. It was the best alarm clock in the world.

Rumi always woke up first. He would sit up in bed with his hair sticking in six directions and shout, "Bread!" like it was the most exciting news anyone had ever heard. He shouted it whether or not Tahirih was awake.

"I know, Rumi," Tahirih would mumble from under her blanket. "There is always bread. There has been bread every single day of our lives."

"But today's bread," Rumi said, "is brand new."

They were seven years old, and they were twins, but they were not the kind of twins who looked exactly alike. Rumi had a gap between his front teeth and a scar on his knee from falling off a scooter. Tahirih had a small brown mole under her left eye and hair that no brush could tame. Their grandmother used to say that Rumi carried his heart on his sleeve, while Tahirih carried hers in a quiet, careful pocket.

Their mother was named Soraya. Her hands were always a little dusty with flour, even after she washed them, because flour got under her fingernails and refused to leave. She had a thin, pale scar across the back of her right hand, shaped like a little crescent moon. When the twins had asked her about it, she said, "An old oven bit me when I was a girl." She did not seem to mind the scar. She said it reminded her that ovens and hearts were both warm and could both sometimes hurt you if you were not careful.

Mama only ever hummed when she was baking. Never in the car, never while doing dishes, never while folding laundry. Only when her hands were in dough. It was as if the dough itself pulled songs out of her.

That Monday morning, Rumi thumped down the narrow stairs in his sock feet. Tahirih came after him more carefully, holding the railing. The kitchen smelled like wheat and butter and something almost sweet, the way the air smells after rain.

"Good morning, my little loaves," Mama said without turning around. She always knew they were there. She called them her little loaves because, she said, they had both come out of her the same way bread came out of the oven — warm, a little lopsided, and perfect.

Rumi pressed his face against the glass of the display case, leaving a steamy nose-print. "Today's bread is brand new," he announced to the bakery.

"Today's bread is always brand new," Mama agreed. She reached up and tied her hair back with a piece of string. Mama did not believe in hair ties. She said string was just as good and cost less.

Tahirih counted the loaves on the wooden rack. There were twelve round loaves with little slashes on top, six long thin ones, and a tray of small rolls shaped like twists. She liked counting. Counting made the morning feel organized.

"Twelve, six, and fourteen," she said.

"Very good," Mama said. "And how many do we sell on a Monday?"

Tahirih thought. "Most of them."

"Most of them," Mama agreed. "But not all."

Every day, there were a few loaves that did not sell. The little neighborhood had only so many mouths, and Mama always baked a little more than she needed to. The twins had never asked why she did this. They only knew that every evening, just before the streetlights blinked on, Mama put the unsold bread into a clean brown paper bag. Then she folded the top down neatly, walked out the back door, and set the bag on the step in the alley behind the shop.

In the morning, the bag was always gone.

It had been gone every morning of the twins' lives.

Rumi pulled his face off the glass. "Mama," he said, "who eats the night bread?"

Mama smiled a small, private smile. Then she said the thing she always said.

"Whoever needs it."

And she went back to her humming.

"Whoever needs it" was a nice answer, but it was not a useful answer. That is what Tahirih whispered to Rumi that night while they were brushing their teeth.

"Whoever," Tahirih said, frothing at the mouth from toothpaste, "is a word grown-ups use when they do not want to explain."

Rumi spit into the sink. "I like whoever," he said. "It sounds like a giant."

"Everything sounds like a giant to you."

"That is because I have a good imagination."

The bathroom was small, and they had to share the sink. Tahirih moved over to make room for Rumi's elbow. Outside the bathroom window, the alley was already dark. The streetlight at the corner flickered on with a soft click, and their mother's paper bag was already on the back step, folded neatly at the top.

"What kind of person takes bread from a step?" Rumi asked.

Tahirih rinsed her toothbrush. "A hungry person."

"But why don't they come inside and buy bread like regular people?"

Tahirih did not answer at first. She put her toothbrush back in the yellow cup and wiped her mouth on the back of her hand. She was thinking.

"Some people," she said finally, "do not have money."

"Oh."

"And some people have money, but they do not have enough."

"Oh."

"And some people have enough, but they do not want anyone to see them taking something for free."

Rumi thought about this. His eyebrows made a little furrow, which was what they always did when he was thinking hard.

"Tahirih?"

"Yes?"

"Can we watch?"

Tahirih paused. "Watch what?"

"The alley. The bag. We could see. We could see who the whoever is."

Tahirih looked at him in the mirror. Her bedroom window faced the alley. From her window, if you leaned just a little, you could see the back step of the bakery. You could see the paper bag. You could see anyone who came to take it.

"Mama might not like that," Tahirih said.

"Mama doesn't have to know."

"Mama always knows."

"Not always." Rumi looked very serious for a seven-year-old, which is to say he looked like a seven-year-old pretending to be a judge. "One night. Just one night. We will be quiet as mice."

Tahirih thought about the mice that sometimes came into the bakery storeroom. They were not, in fact, very quiet. They scratched and squeaked and knocked down bags of flour.

"We will be quieter than mice," she said.

"Quieter than mice!" Rumi agreed.

They hooked their pinkies together. It was their twin promise. When their pinkies hooked, the promise became serious, and nothing in the world could unhook them except doing the thing they had sworn to do.

Mama tucked them in at nine o'clock. She kissed each of them on the forehead. Rumi got his kiss first because he was louder about wanting it. Tahirih got her kiss second because she pretended to be already asleep.

"Sweet dreams, little loaves," Mama said. She turned off the light. The door clicked shut. Her footsteps went soft down the hall and then softer down the stairs. The bakery was below, and below the bakery was the street, and below the street was the world, and somewhere in that world was whoever.

The twins waited.

They counted to one hundred in their heads. Then, to be safe, they counted to one hundred again. Then Rumi whispered, "I think it's been a long time."

"It has been three and a half minutes," Tahirih said. She was a person who kept track of minutes.

"Oh."

They waited more. After a while, they slipped out of their beds in their socked feet and padded across the creaky wooden floor to Tahirih's window. Tahirih had a thick blue curtain, and they hid behind it like explorers in a tent.

The alley below was striped with shadows. The streetlamp made one yellow circle on the cracked concrete. The paper bag sat on the back step, slumped a little, waiting.

"How long do we watch?" Rumi asked.

"As long as it takes."

"What if nobody comes?"

"Then we will know nobody comes."

Rumi nodded, but secretly, deep in his chest, he hoped somebody would come. He did not want the bag to sit there alone all night. It seemed lonely.

They waited. Tahirih counted the red bricks of the building across the alley. There were forty-two rows. Rumi counted the stars he could see through the narrow strip of sky, and there were only three, because in the city the stars were shy.

Then, they heard footsteps.

Shuffle, pause. Shuffle, pause. The footsteps were slow, the kind of footsteps that belong to someone who is tired or old or careful, or perhaps all three. Both twins held their breath.

An old man came into view. He wore a gray coat that was too long for him, so the bottom dragged a little. His beard was white and neat. He carried a cane, but he did not lean on it hard. He walked up to the back step, and he stood there for a moment, looking at the bag.

He did not grab it. He did not stuff it under his coat and run. He bent down slowly, the way a person bends when their knees are not young. He picked up the bag with both hands, the way you might pick up a sleeping cat. He held it for a moment against his chest. Then he nodded once, like he was thanking somebody, even though there was nobody there.

He turned and shuffled back down the alley.

"Rumi!" Tahirih whispered. "Stop it!"

Rumi had his mouth open. He was about to shout.

She could not say what he had been about to shout — "Hello!" or "Wait!" or "Who are you?" — but it did not matter, because Tahirih put her hand over his mouth very firmly.

"Mmmph," said Rumi.

The old man walked past the streetlight. He did not look back. His shadow stretched long and thin behind him, and then it was gone.

Tahirih took her hand away. Rumi breathed hard.

"Why?" he whispered.

"Because," Tahirih said, "we would have embarrassed him."

"Embarrassed?"

Tahirih thought about the right words. She was careful with words; she saved the good ones and used them only when she had to.

"He was taking bread from a step," she said slowly. "He was not asking anyone for help. He did not want to be seen. If we had called to him, he would have known we saw him. And maybe tomorrow he would not have come back. And maybe he would have been hungry."

Rumi's eyes were wide in the dark. Tahirih could see the shine of them.

"Oh," Rumi said.

They went back to bed. Neither of them spoke for a long time. Then Rumi whispered across the space between their beds.

"Tahirih?"

"Yes?"

"Do you think Mama knows it is him?"

Tahirih considered this.

"I think," she said, "Mama knows it is whoever."

The next day, the twins did not speak about the old man. They did not speak about him at breakfast, when Mama made them oatmeal with honey. They did not speak about him at school, where they sat at different tables because their teacher believed twins needed practice being apart. They did not speak about him on the walk home, even when they passed an old man in a gray coat who was walking the other way and could have been him but could also have been anybody.

But they watched for him. And they thought about him. And that night, when Mama kissed them goodnight, they counted to one hundred twice, and then they crept to Tahirih's window again.

This time, the paper bag on the step had two small rolls next to it — extra ones, tucked beside the bag like little secrets. Mama had done that on purpose. Maybe she had known, somehow, that the old man had come yesterday, and that two rolls would be a kindness.

"Shh," said Tahirih, even though neither of them was talking.

They waited. The clock in the hall ticked. Somewhere a car door slammed. A cat cried from a fence.

Then, quick footsteps came down the alley. These footsteps were not slow or old. They were bright and light, and there were small extra footsteps behind them — the pitter-patter of a much tinier pair of feet.

A young woman walked into the light of the streetlamp. She had a scarf tied around her hair. She wore a big coat that was too thin for the cold, and she held the hand of a very small child, maybe two years old, who wore a red wool hat.

The child stopped and pointed at the bag.

"Bread," the child said. The word was small and clear.

The young woman knelt down beside the child. She whispered something the twins could not hear. Then she picked up the bag with one hand and, with the other, picked up her little one.

Before she left, she did something the old man had not done. She took one of the extra rolls. She handed it to the toddler. The toddler held it with both hands like it was a treasure. The toddler giggled.

"Shhh, Nima," the mother whispered. "Shhh, shhh." And she carried him away into the dark.

Tahirih pressed her cheek against the cold glass. She felt a warm thing rise up in her chest, and she could not tell if she wanted to cry or if she wanted to laugh or if it was somewhere in between.

Rumi was sniffing. Rumi cried easily. He cried at sad songs and happy songs and songs that were just okay.

"She called him Nima," Rumi whispered.

"Yes."

"Tahirih. We have to do something."

"We are doing something," she said. "We are watching."

"That is not enough."

Tahirih looked at her brother. In the half-dark, his eyes were shining.

"What do you want to do?" she asked.

Rumi thought. His mouth scrunched. Then his face opened up the way a flower opens in sun.

"I want to leave them a note," he said.

But before they could leave a note, there was a third night, and a third visitor.

This time, they almost missed him. It was very late, and Rumi had started to nod off against the windowsill. Tahirih poked him awake.

"Someone's coming," she whispered.

This time the footsteps were small. Small and uncertain. They scuffed.

A boy walked into the circle of streetlight.

He was about their size. Maybe a little taller. He wore a jacket with the zipper broken, so he held it closed with one hand. His shoes were scuffed white at the toes. He had no hat and no gloves.

He was alone.

The twins had seen a lot of things in their seven years, but somehow, seeing a boy their own age walk alone into the alley at night was the thing that made both of their stomachs feel tight. Rumi opened his mouth. This time, Tahirih did not have to stop him. He closed it himself.

The boy walked up to the step. He looked left. He looked right. He picked up the bag very quickly, the way a squirrel grabs a nut. He tucked it under his broken jacket. And then he turned and walked away, fast, his scuffed shoes slapping the concrete.

He was gone in ten seconds. Maybe less.

Neither twin spoke for a long time.

Finally, Rumi said, "He was our size."

"Yes."

"Tahirih."

"Yes, Rumi."

"I do not understand."

"I know."

"Why doesn't his mama give him bread?"

Tahirih did not know the answer. She was only seven. She knew some things — she knew how to count and how to read most words and how to make rice without burning it. But she did not know why a boy her size would walk alone at night, at night, with a broken jacket, to take a paper bag off a step.

"Maybe she can't," Tahirih said. "Maybe his mama is sick. Or tired. Or maybe he doesn't have one."

Rumi blinked. "Everyone has one."

"Not everyone, Rumi."

Rumi's eyebrows did the furrow thing again.

"Then we have to do the note," he said. "We have to do the note now."

Tahirih nodded.

The next morning, they got out their paper. Tahirih had the good paper with the lines. Rumi had the plain paper. They sat at the little table in their room.

"What do we write?" Rumi asked.

"I don't know yet."

They thought. Rumi chewed on the end of his pencil. He was a pencil-chewer. Tahirih tapped her finger on the table. She was a tapper.

Finally, Tahirih said, "We should not sign our names."

"Why?"

"Because the note is a gift. And when you give a gift, sometimes a name makes the other person feel like they owe you."

Rumi did not fully understand this. But he trusted his sister's thinking. So he nodded.

"What then?"

THE BREAD IS FOR YOU. WE HOPE IT IS WARM TONIGHT.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

She passed the paper to Rumi. Rumi drew something at the bottom. He drew a sun with a smiley face in it. He drew a small loaf of bread with a heart on top. He drew three little stars.

They folded the paper into a small square. That evening, when Mama went upstairs to fold laundry, Tahirih tiptoed out the back door and slipped the note into the paper bag, right on top of the loaves, where anyone who opened it would see it first.

She came back inside with pink cheeks.

"Done?" Rumi asked.

"Done."

They did not watch the alley that night. Somehow, it felt wrong to watch the note being received. It felt like the kind of thing a person should be allowed to do without being stared at.

In the morning, the bag was gone.

The next morning was a Saturday, which was the best day, because there was no school and Mama let them help in the bakery.

Tahirih swept the floor. She liked sweeping. The little clouds of flour rose up and then settled down, and the broom made a soft sound, like whisper, whisper, whisper.

"Tahirih," Mama called from the back. "Would you go and bring in yesterday's bread bag? I think I left it on the step."

"Yes, Mama."

Tahirih walked through the back of the bakery, past the big metal oven with its round black door, past the sacks of flour stacked against the wall, past the little brown mouse-hole that Mama would not let anyone cover up because she said the mouse needed a house too. She pushed open the back door.

The morning was cold and bright. The alley was quiet.

The paper bag was gone, as it always was.

But on the back step, there was something else.

Something new.

Tahirih crouched down. It was small — smaller than her hand. It was wrapped in a piece of blue cloth, and the cloth was tied with string, and inside the cloth was a lump.

She untied the string carefully. She peeled back the cloth.

Inside was a bar of soap.

It was pale yellow and speckled with something darker — maybe oatmeal. It smelled like honey and something else, something faint, like flowers Tahirih could not name. The bar was oval-shaped. It looked like someone had shaped it by hand. Pressed into the top was a tiny flower, maybe made with a button.

There was no note. No name.

Just soap.

Tahirih held the soap in her palm. She stood in the alley for a long time, just holding it.

Then she carried it inside.

"Mama," she said, her voice small. "Look."

Mama looked. Mama's eyes went from the soap to Tahirih's face and back to the soap. Her fingers, covered in flour, hovered over it without touching.

"Oh," Mama said. Just that. Just oh.

"Somebody left it," Tahirih said.

"Yes."

"Who?"

Mama was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "Whoever."

And for the first time in her life, Tahirih felt something flicker inside her that was not quite frustration. It was more like an itch. A curiosity. A small flame.

If whoever had taken the bread last night —

Then someone had given something back.

Someone had come to their step in the dark with a bar of homemade soap wrapped in a blue cloth, and had left it on the step like a secret hello.

Somebody who was also a whoever.

Rumi came running in from the front, still holding a jar of apricot jam. "What is that?" he asked.

"Soap," Tahirih said.

"Who made it?"

"We do not know."

"Why is it here?"

"We do not know."

Rumi's eyes went wide. He loved a mystery. He loved a mystery more than he loved ice cream, and that was saying a lot.

"Tahirih," he whispered. "There is a mystery."

"Yes," Tahirih whispered back. "There is a mystery."

They looked at each other over the little oval bar of soap, and they knew, without having to say it, that they were going to solve it.

The twins became detectives. This is what Rumi called it. He insisted on calling it that even when Tahirih said "we are just paying attention."

"Detectives pay attention," Rumi said, with the confidence of someone who had once seen a picture book about a detective. "That is what detectives do."

They made a list. Tahirih wrote it on the back of an envelope in her neat seven-year-old hand.

1. The soap is yellow. 2. It smells like honey. 3. It has a flower pressed on top. 4. It was wrapped in a blue cloth. 5. It was tied with string. The string is the kind Mama uses. 6. Whoever gave it knows we give bread.

"Number six is important," Rumi said. "Someone who knows about the bread is also leaving the soap. So we are not dealing with a stranger."

"Are you reading a book?" Tahirih asked. "Because you are talking like a book."

"I am a detective," Rumi said proudly.

They went for a walk that afternoon. They walked up and down their street, which was a short street with only seven houses and the bakery. They looked at every door. They looked at every window box. They wanted to see if anyone had a garden of honey flowers, or a pile of soap-making supplies, or a blue cloth hanging in a window.

Mrs. Delgado was hanging laundry in her yard. She had a red sheet, a green towel, a purple shirt. No blue cloth.

Mr. Howard was fixing his fence with a hammer. He had no flowers at all. He had only dirt and a sleeping dog.

The Khans had a window box with yellow pansies. Rumi got excited, but Tahirih reminded him that pansies do not smell like honey. Pansies barely smell like anything. Rumi admitted she was right.

The corner house — old Mrs. Jafari's house — had a window box too. But the window box was empty, just brown dirt and one dead stick from last year's basil. Mrs. Jafari lived alone. Her husband had died two winters ago. Mama had made them extra bread that winter, a lot of extra bread, and brought it to Mrs. Jafari's door every morning, quietly, without announcements. The twins had almost forgotten about that.

"What about Mrs. Jafari?" Rumi whispered, because they were right in front of her house.

"Her window box is empty."

"But..."

"Shh."

Mrs. Jafari came to the window just then. She was a small woman with silver hair pulled back in a bun, and a navy cardigan, and glasses that slipped down her nose. She saw the twins. She gave them a small smile and a small wave. They smiled and waved back. She stepped away from the window.

They walked on.

"She is very quiet," Rumi said, when they were safely out of earshot.

"Yes."

"But just because someone is quiet does not mean they left a soap on our step."

"Also true."

They continued their investigation. They examined lampposts. They peered into trash bins. They found a lost mitten, a penny, and a coupon for tuna fish. None of these solved the mystery.

They came home empty-handed.

That night, before they went to bed, Tahirih said, "Rumi. I have been thinking."

"About what?"

"About whether the mystery is really a mystery."

Rumi sat up in his bed. "What does that mean?"

"It means, maybe, that we are not meant to know. Mama never asks who takes the bread. Maybe she knows she is not supposed to ask. Maybe the whoever is a whoever because that is what whoevers are."

Rumi frowned. "But I want to know."

"I know."

"Don't you want to know?"

Tahirih thought.

"I do," she said finally. "But part of me thinks... if we find out, we might ruin it."

Rumi thought about this for a long time. It was the longest he had ever gone without talking.

Then he said, "One more try. Let's do one more try. And if we cannot find out, we stop. Pinky promise."

Tahirih hooked her pinky with his.

"One more try."

Their plan was simple. It was the kind of plan a seven-year-old makes, which is to say, it was a plan with a great big hole in it that they did not notice.

They told Mama after dinner that they wanted to have a "fort night." A fort night was when they dragged cushions into the living room and built a fort out of blankets and flashlights. Mama loved fort nights. Mama said fort nights were one of the best things about having children.

"Very well, my little loaves," she said, smiling. "But no staying up past ten."

"Yes, Mama," they said, both of them with perfectly innocent faces.

After Mama went upstairs, they built their fort. They made it good and tall. They put a flashlight inside it so it would glow from outside like any fort should glow. And then, very quietly, they slipped out of the fort and down to the bakery.

The bakery at night was different from the bakery during the day. It was dark. The ovens were off. The smell of bread had faded into something softer — the ghost of bread, the memory of bread. The jam jars were shadows on the shelves.

They sat down at the back window behind the flour sacks.

They waited.

Tahirih had brought a book, but it was too dark to read. Rumi had brought an apple, which he crunched loudly until Tahirih made him stop.

Ten minutes passed.

Twenty minutes passed.

Thirty minutes passed, which was very long for a seven-year-old.

Rumi's head nodded forward. Then back. Then forward again. His breathing got slow and soft. Tahirih poked him.

"Stay awake."

"I am awake."

"You are not."

"I have awake eyes."

"Your eyes are closed."

"Oh."

Tahirih's own eyes were feeling heavy. The flour sacks were soft. The bakery was warm. She blinked, and blinked again, and then —

Then she was dreaming of a field of yellow flowers, and the flowers were made of dough, and somewhere someone was humming.

Humming.

Humming.

Tahirih's eyes snapped open.

Someone was humming.

And it was not in her dream.

It was Mama.

Mama was humming.

Tahirih blinked hard. For a moment she was confused. She and Rumi were still curled up behind the flour sacks. The bakery was still dark. But from the kitchen in the back, a soft light was glowing, and the humming was coming from there. Low and warm, like the humming the twins heard through their bedroom floor every morning.

Tahirih elbowed Rumi.

"Wake up."

"Gnfrh."

"Wake UP."

Rumi blinked. "What."

"Mama is baking."

"Mama is always baking."

"It is the middle of the night."

They crawled out from behind the flour sacks. They kept low, because they were still trying to be detectives, and detectives kept low. They peeked around the corner into the kitchen.

And there was Mama. In her long gray nightdress, with her hair still tied up with a piece of string. Her hands were in a big bowl of dough. She was humming something Tahirih had never heard her hum before — or perhaps she had heard it, a long time ago, a lullaby or a baker's song from Mama's own grandmother.

The oven was on. Three little loaves were rising on the back counter. The pale morning had not started yet. It was still the middle of the night.

Mama was making the morning's bread.

Before the morning.

Mama was always up before the sun. But the twins had never, ever been awake to see it. They had always just heard the thumping and smelled the smell. They had never seen her hands actually in the dough, never seen her face in the lamp-light, with nobody watching, not performing for customers, just... making bread because bread needed to be made.

Tahirih's throat went tight. She did not know why.

"Tahirih," Rumi whispered. "Look."

He was not pointing at Mama. He was pointing past her. Past her, through the kitchen window, which looked out on the back step.

On the step was a small paper bag, folded at the top. Fresh. Tonight's bag. Mama must have put it there already.

And next to the bag, outside in the dark, there was a figure.

The figure was small and bent. The figure was bending down. The figure placed something on the step, near the bag.

Then the figure straightened up, adjusted its cardigan, and walked away.

Its silver hair caught the light from the streetlamp for just one second.

And the twins knew.

They knew.

Mrs. Jafari.

It was Mrs. Jafari.

Mrs. Jafari from the corner house with the empty window box. Mrs. Jafari with the navy cardigan and the glasses that slipped down her nose. Mrs. Jafari whose husband had died two winters ago. Mrs. Jafari who had waved at them from her window that afternoon.

Mrs. Jafari, who had been taking bread.

Mrs. Jafari, who had been leaving soap.

The twins stayed where they were, crouched in the dark, their hearts pounding. Mama hummed. Mama had not looked up. Mama had not seen Mrs. Jafari, or, perhaps — perhaps, Tahirih thought — perhaps Mama had not looked on purpose.

Mrs. Jafari was gone down the alley. Her small footsteps faded.

Mama took the three little loaves and slid them into the big oven. She closed the door. She stood up, stretched her back, and turned around.

She stopped.

She looked straight at the flour sacks.

"My little loaves," she said softly. "What are you doing down there?"

The twins crawled out, pink-faced.

Mama did not look angry. She did not even look surprised, really. She looked the way she looked when she was checking if a loaf was done. Tilting her head a little. Listening for something.

"We —" Rumi started.

"We were —" Tahirih said.

Mama held up one floury hand. "Come here."

They came. They sat on the little stools by the wooden work-table. Mama poured them each a small cup of warm milk with honey. She always kept milk on the stove at night, she said, in case she got peckish. The twins had not known this. There was so much, it seemed, that they had not known about their mother.

"You saw Mrs. Jafari," Mama said. It was not a question.

"Yes, Mama," Tahirih whispered.

"How did you know?" Rumi asked.

Mama smiled. She sat down across from them. Her hands rested on the table, dusty with flour, the little crescent scar pale against her skin.

"I did not know at first," Mama said. "For a long time I did not know who took the bread. When I was a young baker, before you were born, I used to wonder. My own mother had done the same thing in her village, far from here, long ago. She taught me to bake a little extra every day and to put it somewhere where someone else could find it. She said, 'Soraya, you do not need to know who eats it. You only need to know that someone will.'"

Mama took a breath. She looked out the window. The night was quiet now.

"But I kept the eyes of a baker," Mama went on. "A baker sees things. I would see Mrs. Jafari walk past the shop sometimes, very early, and I would see her look at the back alley and walk on. And one morning, about a year ago, I found a little soap on the step. Wrapped in blue cloth. And I knew."

"Was she hungry?" Rumi asked.

"Sometimes, yes. Her pension is small. Her husband Behzad was the one who made soaps — he sold them at the Saturday market. After he died, she kept making the soaps, because it was his work, and making them made her feel close to him. But she has fewer customers now. She does not always sell enough to buy everything she needs."

"Oh," Rumi said.

"She is a proud woman," Mama continued. "A good, good woman. She does not want anyone to pity her. She does not want anyone to come to her door with charity. So. She takes the bread from the step, which is the same as not taking it from anyone. And she leaves us a soap now and then, because she has pride, and because she wants to give something back, even if she cannot pay."

The twins were quiet.

"Mama," Tahirih said, "does she know that you know?"

"I think," Mama said, "she suspects. But we have never talked about it. That is the agreement, even though nobody has ever written it down. The step is the only place we meet."

Rumi's eyebrows were doing the furrow thing very hard.

"So," he said. "The note we left — the one for the whoever —"

Mama's face changed. Something soft and bright came into it. "Was that you?"

"Yes, Mama," Tahirih said.

Mama laughed, and it was a short, wet laugh, and her eyes were shining. "Oh, my little loaves. I wondered. I found it on the step in the morning, folded in the cloth with the soap. She had left it back for me to find."

"She kept our note?" Rumi said.

"She kept your note."

Rumi sniffed. Of course he sniffed. He was Rumi.

Tahirih sat very still. She was thinking about a lot of things. She was thinking about the old man, and the young mother, and the boy their size, and Mrs. Jafari, and the bread, and the soap, and the blue cloth, and the humming.

She was thinking that the whole little neighborhood, without any of them saying it out loud, was holding each other up.

Mama sent them to bed. The twins did not argue. They were too tired. They were also too full — full of warm milk, and full of feelings.

They climbed up the stairs. They crawled into their beds. Tahirih stared at her ceiling.

"Rumi," she whispered.

"Yes."

"We can't tell."

"Tell who?"

"Anyone. We cannot tell anyone that Mrs. Jafari is the whoever. Not at school. Not to friends. Not to anyone."

"I know."

"Because if we tell, people will treat her differently. They will look at her differently. They will try to help her in ways she does not want. They will... take her dignity."

"Take her what?"

Tahirih tried to explain. "Her standing-up-straightness. The part of her that gets to be proud."

"Oh."

"We have to let her keep that."

"We will."

"Pinky."

In the dark, they found each other's pinkies without looking.

They slept.

In the morning, Tahirih was the one who woke first, for the first time in a long time. She got up and walked to the back window. She looked down at the step.

There was a small cardboard star on the step.

It was cut from brown cardboard and colored with orange crayon, the kind a grown-up might make if they did not have fancy art supplies but wanted to make something anyway. It was a plain little five-pointed star. It was propped up against the step.

The paper bag was gone.

Tahirih ran to Rumi. "Get up."

"Whuh."

"There's a star."

"A what?"

"She left us a star. Mrs. Jafari left us a star."

Rumi was up like a shot. They tumbled down the stairs. Mama was already in the kitchen, humming. She did not say anything. She only nodded at the back door, which was propped open, and tilted her head to the alley.

They went out.

THANK YOU.

That was all.

No name. No return address. No promises.

Just THANK YOU.

Tahirih held it against her chest. Rumi's eyes got shiny.

"Tahirih."

"Yes."

"We should write back."

"Yes."

"But — we have to be careful. We cannot say we know it is her."

"Right."

"We cannot say anything that would give her away."

"Right."

They went back inside. They did not speak to Mama. They went up to their room. They got out the good paper. Tahirih took up her pencil.

She thought about what to write for a long time. A very long time. Longer than she had ever spent on a note in her life.

WE DO NOT KNOW WHO YOU ARE. BUT WE KNOW THAT YOU ARE KIND. THANK YOU FOR THE SOAP. THANK YOU FOR THE STAR. YOUR NEIGHBORS LOVE YOU.

They folded the note. They tied it with a piece of Mama's string.

That evening, just before the streetlamp clicked on, Tahirih slipped out the back door and placed the note on the step, under a small stone so the wind would not blow it away.

In the morning, it was gone.

And the bag was gone too.

And nothing was left back.

But in the empty window box of the corner house, when they walked past on their way to school, there was one small yellow flower. A fresh one. Brand new.

Mrs. Jafari waved at them from her window. She was smiling a bigger smile than usual. Her silver hair caught the morning light.

The twins waved back.

They did not say a word.

After that, the twins watched the world differently.

They watched with new eyes. Because once you have seen one bread angel, you start to see them everywhere.

They saw Mr. Howard, the man with the fence and the sleeping dog, carrying a bag of groceries to the porch of the family across the street. He set it down, rang the bell, and walked away quickly, before anyone could open the door.

They saw Mrs. Delgado slip a twenty-dollar bill into the mailbox of the Singh family when nobody was looking. She did not sign it. She did not put it in an envelope with her name.

They saw the bus driver wait an extra minute at the corner, every single morning, for a girl with a big backpack who was always just barely running from the end of the block. The bus driver never said anything to her. He just waited. He waited every day.

They saw the librarian slip a granola bar into the coat pocket of the boy their size — the one they had seen in the alley. The boy did not see her do it. He found it later, and his face opened up like a door, and he stuck it in his mouth and chewed it on the walk home.

The world, the twins realized, was full of bread angels.

Bread angels were the people who did things quietly. Who did not wait for thank-yous. Who did not post what they did on signs or say it at dinner parties. Who did not even, sometimes, know that anyone was watching — because they thought they were the only ones.

But they were not the only ones.

There was a whole web of them, invisible as spider silk, strung between the houses of their little neighborhood. You could not see the web in the daytime. But at night, if you watched from the right window, you could almost see it glint.

Their mama had been part of the web all along.

One evening, Tahirih asked Mama, "Mama. Why do you leave bread on the step?"

Mama thought for a long time. She wiped her hands on her apron. She sat down at the little table.

"Because someone, somewhere," Mama said, "once left bread on a step for my mother. When I was very small, and my mother was very tired, and there was not much food. She never knew who. And I never knew who. But I know that someone did. And because of them, my mother and I ate. And she lived long enough to teach me this. And now I teach you."

"Was the person who left bread for Grandma a... bread angel?" Rumi asked.

Mama smiled. "That is a beautiful word. Yes. They were."

"Are we bread angels?" Rumi asked.

Mama looked at them both. Her eyes were kind.

"You can be, if you want to be."

"How?"

"Do kind things. Quietly. Do them without waiting for a thank-you. Do them even when nobody is watching. Do them even when the person you are helping does not know it is you."

"Like you do," Tahirih said.

"Like I do. Like Mrs. Jafari does. Like many, many people in this town do."

"Mama," Rumi said, "why does it have to be a secret? Wouldn't it be nicer if everyone knew?"

Mama thought.

"When you tell people about the good thing you did," she said slowly, "part of the good thing becomes about you. About being proud. About being noticed. It changes."

"But some people still need to know they are appreciated," Tahirih said.

"They do. And you can tell them you appreciate them. But you do not have to tell them you gave them bread. Do you see?"

Rumi did not entirely see. He was only seven. But some part of him — a part deeper than understanding — nodded yes.

“In a later age I was suspended and my breast was made a target to the darts of the malicious cruelty of my foes.” Tahirih asked.

"A wise teacher, a long time ago. His name was Bahá'u'lláh. He taught that the smallest kindness — done in secret, with no wish to be seen — is worth more than the biggest show. That service is a kind of prayer."

"Service," Rumi repeated. It was a big word, but he liked how it felt in his mouth.

"Service is helping," Mama said. "And the best service is like bread. Warm. Quiet. Passed from hand to hand. Without needing a name on it."

The twins were quiet for a long time.

Then Rumi said, "Mama?"

"Yes, my loaf?"

"Can I put the paper bag out tonight?"

Mama's eyes filled up, just a little. She nodded.

"Yes, Rumi. You can."

That night, Rumi was the one who carried the brown paper bag to the back step. His hair was sticking in six directions. His tongue was poking out of the side of his mouth the way it always did when he was concentrating. He walked very slowly. He did not want to drop the bag. He did not want to crush the loaves. He set the bag down on the step as if he were setting down a sleeping baby.

Tahirih watched from the kitchen window.

She was thinking about a lot of things at once. She was thinking about the old man's slow footsteps. She was thinking about the little toddler called Nima, clutching a roll in two fists. She was thinking about the boy her size with the broken zipper. She was thinking about Mrs. Jafari with her silver hair.

She was thinking about the bread angels.

They meant ordinary people. Ordinary people, doing ordinary, quiet, tiny things, that added up to something a little bit like magic.

Rumi came back inside. He stamped his socks on the mat.

"Did I do it right?" he asked.

"You did it perfectly," Tahirih said.

That night, the twins did not watch out the window. They did not sneak to the alley. They did not try to catch anybody.

They climbed into their beds. They pulled the covers up. Mama came to kiss them goodnight.

"Sweet dreams, little loaves," she said.

"Mama," Tahirih asked, as Mama was about to shut off the light, "what if nobody needs bread tonight?"

Mama paused at the door.

"Then someone else will eat it tomorrow," she said. "Or maybe a sparrow. Or maybe a dog. Bread does not go to waste in this world. If it is made with love, it always finds somebody."

"Oh," said Tahirih.

"Good night, my loaves."

"Good night, Mama."

The light clicked off.

In the dark, Rumi whispered, "Tahirih?"

"Yes?"

"What did you put in the bag tonight?"

Tahirih was quiet for a moment.

"A note," she said.

"What did it say?"

Rumi thought about that for a long time.

"That is a good note," he said at last.

"Yes."

"Tahirih."

"Yes."

"I love you."

"I love you too. Go to sleep."

And they did.

In the morning, the bag was gone.

As the bag was always gone. As the bag had always been gone, every morning of their lives, and would be every morning of their lives to come.

Only this time, something new was there.

Not a soap. Not a star. Not a cardboard something.

A whole row of people.

Rumi saw them first, pressing his nose to the glass. "Tahirih! Look!"

Tahirih ran to the window.

Outside on the sidewalk in front of the bakery, there was a small, quiet cluster of people. Not a crowd. Not exactly. Just — people. The old man in the gray coat was there, leaning on his cane. The young woman in the too-thin coat was there, holding the toddler Nima's hand. The boy their size was there, with his jacket now fully zipped — someone had fixed it. Mrs. Jafari was there, with her navy cardigan buttoned against the cool morning.

They were not talking. They were not looking at each other. Most of them were pretending not to know each other.

But they were all holding something.

The old man held a small potted herb — rosemary, maybe.

The young woman held a folded baby blanket.

The boy held a smooth stone polished shiny.

Mrs. Jafari held a basket, and in the basket were many small bars of oatmeal soap, shaped by her own hands.

They had all come. All of them. Not to be thanked. Not to be seen. Just — to bring something. To be here, for once, in the morning. To stand on the sidewalk in front of a bakery with the name SUNRISE BREAD painted over the window.

Mama stepped outside.

She did not say anything.

She did not have to.

She looked at each of them, her eyes going slowly from one face to the next. Her hand went up to the scar shaped like a crescent moon, and she pressed it gently, like you might press a locket you have worn for a long time.

Then she nodded. Just a little.

And one by one, they nodded back.

And then they came into the bakery, one at a time, and Mama gave each of them a fresh loaf, still warm, and she did not charge any of them, and she called them all "dear." She called the old man dear. She called the young mother dear. She called the boy dear. She called Mrs. Jafari "Gol jan," which means "dear flower" in another language. Mrs. Jafari's eyes shone behind her glasses.

Mrs. Jafari pressed a small bar of oatmeal soap into Tahirih's palm, and one into Rumi's. She leaned down close, close enough that the twins could see the fine lines around her eyes.

"I think," Mrs. Jafari whispered, "you two know a secret."

"We know many secrets," Rumi whispered back, very serious.

"Good," Mrs. Jafari said. "Keep them. Secrets are like seeds. If you bury them quietly, they grow into the most beautiful gardens."

And she straightened up, and she bought one round loaf with three coins that she counted out carefully, and she said loudly, for all the shop to hear, "Soraya, your bread is always so fresh," and nothing else, and she walked out.

Just like that.

Nobody made a speech. Nobody cried, except Rumi, who cried a little, because he cried about everything. Nobody named names. Nobody gave thanks that could be heard.

But the little bakery was full.

It was full of people and bread and a kind of warmth that did not come from the oven.

Tahirih stood by her mother. She watched the morning unfold. She watched her mother's flour-dusted hands move from one loaf to another, one person to another. She watched Rumi hand out paper napkins with both hands, the way he handed out everything in life.

You could almost, almost see it. Glinting between them. Going from the old man to the young mother to the boy to Mrs. Jafari to Mama to Rumi to Tahirih and back around, weaving and reweaving, loop after loop after loop.

A web held up by bread and soap and stars and notes with no names.

A web of bread angels.

That night, when Mama kissed them goodnight, Tahirih said, "Mama."

"Yes, my loaf."

"I want to learn to bake."

Mama's face softened.

"You do?"

"Yes. Not today. But soon. I want to learn to make bread the way you do. With extra. For the step."

Mama sat down on the edge of Tahirih's bed. She brushed Tahirih's tangled hair back from her forehead.

"I would be honored," Mama said, "to teach you."

Rumi, from the other bed, popped up. "Me too!"

"You too."

"Will we hum?" Rumi asked.

"You will hum if the bread wants you to."

"How will I know if the bread wants me to?"

"You will know," Mama said, "because your hands will feel happy."

Rumi nodded solemnly. His hands already felt happy, just thinking about it.

Mama kissed each of them. She turned off the light. She closed the door. Her footsteps went down the hall and down the stairs.

In the dark, the twins whispered.

"Tahirih."

"Yes."

"We are going to be bread angels."

"We already are, a little."

"But we are going to be real ones. Official ones."

"Rumi. There is no such thing as official bread angels."

"Then we will be unofficial ones."

"All bread angels are unofficial."

"Good."

A pause.

"Tahirih?"

"Yes."

"Do you think Mama is the most bread angel of all the bread angels?"

Tahirih thought. She thought about Mama getting up in the dark. Mama humming with flour on her hands. Mama's crescent scar. Mama's mother, long ago, in a village Tahirih had never seen, being handed bread by a stranger who would never know what their kindness began.

"I think Mama," Tahirih said, "is part of a very long line of bread angels. Going back a long, long time. Before us. Before her. Before her mama. Back and back and back."

"Like a chain."

"Like a chain."

"And we are the next link."

"And we are the next link."

"Tahirih."

"Yes."

"I like being a link."

"Me too."

Outside, somewhere down the alley, a soft pair of footsteps — maybe old, maybe young, maybe somewhere in between — scuffled up to a certain back step. A paper bag was lifted. A paper bag was cradled. A paper bag was carried away into the night.

And on the step, in the moonlight, a small thing was left behind.

The twins did not see what it was. They were already asleep, with their pinkies almost touching across the space between their beds, dreaming of dough rising, dough rising, dough rising.

Outside, in the quiet city, a long invisible web of bread angels glinted in the dark.
