The old radio sat on the workbench in Marta Delgado's garage like a creature from another century. It was boxy and brown, with a dial the size of a cookie and a speaker covered in dusty cloth. Marta had found it at a yard sale three weeks ago, paid two dollars for it, and carried it home like treasure.

"You're staring at it again," said her best friend, Kofi Asante, leaning against the garage doorframe with his arms crossed. He was tall for ten, with deep brown skin and glasses that were always a little crooked. "It's a radio, Marta. Not a spaceship."

"It could be better than a spaceship." Marta pushed her dark curly hair behind her ears and crouched down so she was eye-level with the dial. "A spaceship only takes you somewhere. A radio brings everyone together without anyone having to move."

Kofi raised an eyebrow. "That's either really deep or really weird."

"Maybe both." Marta grinned. She turned the dial slowly, and the radio crackled to life with a hiss of white noise. She moved it carefully through the frequencies — past a country station, past a talk show host yelling about traffic, past classical music that made Kofi pretend to fall asleep — until she found a blank stretch of nothing. Just empty static, like an open field of snow.

"Hear that?" she said.

"I hear nothing."

"Exactly. An empty frequency. Nobody's using it. Do you know what that means?"

Kofi pushed his glasses up his nose. "That nobody wants it?"

"That it's waiting for us." Marta stood and spread her arms wide, nearly knocking a can of paint off the shelf. "We could start our own radio station, Kofi. A real one. Low-power FM — it's legal if you keep it under a hundred milliwatts. I looked it up."

"You looked it up," Kofi repeated slowly.

"On the library computer. Three times. There are kits you can buy online. You build a little transmitter, hook it up to an antenna, and boom — you're on the air. We could broadcast to the whole neighborhood."

Kofi walked into the garage and sat on an overturned bucket. He was quiet for a moment, which meant he was actually thinking about it. Kofi never said yes to anything without thinking first, which was one of the reasons Marta needed him. She had enough ideas for ten people, but Kofi was the one who figured out which ideas wouldn't end in disaster.

"What would we even broadcast?" he asked.

"Everything! Stories. Music. Neighborhood news. Interviews with interesting people. Mrs. Okoro could do a cooking segment — you know she's always trying to get people to try her jollof rice. Mr. Pham could talk about his pigeons. We could do a lost-and-found report, because somebody on Maple Street is always losing a cat."

"That's Mrs. Greenbaum. She has four cats and none of them have any sense."

"See? Content!" Marta clapped her hands together. "We could call it something good. Something that sounds real."

"How about WKID?" Kofi suggested, and then immediately looked surprised at himself for joining in so quickly.

Marta's eyes went wide. "WKID. That's perfect. WKID Radio — the voice of Riverside Heights." She grabbed a marker from the workbench and wrote it on the whiteboard her dad used for workshop projects. The letters were big and bold and slightly crooked.

"My mom's going to want to know what we're doing in here," Kofi said.

"So we tell her. It's educational. It's community-building. It's STEM."

"You're going to say STEM to my mother?"

"It'll work. Trust me."

Kofi sighed, but he was smiling. That was the thing about Kofi — he sighed a lot, but he always showed up.

They spent the rest of that Saturday afternoon planning. Marta drew diagrams of the garage, marking where the transmitter would go, where the microphone would sit, where they'd need soundproofing. Kofi made a list of everything they'd need to buy and how much it would cost.

"Egg cartons," Marta said. "My abuela saves them. She has like a hundred."

"That's not real soundproofing."

"It's good enough for a garage radio station."

By the time the afternoon light was turning golden and slanting through the garage windows, they had a plan. They'd pool their allowance money, buy the transmitter kit, and spend the next two weeks building it. They'd recruit a few more kids from the neighborhood to help with programming. And by the end of the month, WKID Radio would be on the air.

As Kofi headed home for dinner, he paused at the end of the driveway. "Hey, Marta?"

"Yeah?"

"Who's going to listen?"

Marta leaned against the garage door and looked down the street. Riverside Heights wasn't a fancy neighborhood. The houses were small and close together, with chain-link fences and narrow yards. Mrs. Okoro's garden spilled over with tomatoes and peppers. Mr. Pham's pigeon coop sat on his roof like a tiny castle. The community garden at the end of the block was a patchwork of raised beds and sunflowers and someone's ambitious attempt at growing pumpkins.

It was a neighborhood full of people who knew each other's names, who brought soup when someone was sick, who argued about parking spots and then apologized with cookies. It wasn't perfect, but it was real.

"Everyone," Marta said. "Everyone's going to listen."

Kofi shook his head, but he was smiling again. "See you Monday."

Marta waved and went back into the garage. She sat on the stool in front of the workbench and turned the radio dial back to that empty frequency. The static whispered and hummed like a held breath.

"Soon," she told it. "We're going to fill you up with something good."

The static crackled, as if in agreement.

That night, Marta lay in bed staring at the ceiling, her mind buzzing with frequencies and possibilities. She thought about all the voices in Riverside Heights — all the stories people carried around that nobody ever heard. Mrs. Greenbaum and her impossible cats. The twins on Cedar Lane who could beatbox better than anyone she'd seen on the internet. Old Mr. Wallace, who'd been a jazz drummer in the 1960s and had stories that could fill a book.

Every person was like a radio station of their own, she thought, broadcasting on a frequency that only a few people ever tuned into. What if WKID could change that? What if they could help the whole neighborhood hear each other?

It was a big idea for a ten-year-old. Maybe too big. But Marta Delgado had never let that stop her before.

She pulled the covers up to her chin and closed her eyes, and fell asleep to the imagined sound of a radio crackling to life.

The transmitter kit arrived on a Wednesday, in a brown box small enough to fit inside Marta's backpack. She carried it home from the post office like it was made of glass, walking slowly and carefully even though Kofi pointed out that electronic components weren't actually fragile.

"Some of them are," Marta said defensively.

"Not these. They're designed to be assembled by hobbyists. The instructions probably have pictures."

They did have pictures, which was good because the instructions themselves were in very small print and used words like "oscillator" and "capacitor" that made Kofi reach for his phone to look things up.

Marta's garage became mission control. Her father, who was an electrician by trade and a tinkerer by nature, had given them permission to use the space as long as they cleaned up after themselves and didn't burn anything down.

"That second part is important," he'd said, giving Marta a meaningful look.

"That was one time, Papa, and it was a very small fire."

"All fires start small, mija."

By Thursday afternoon, Marta and Kofi had recruited two more members for WKID Radio. The first was Priya Sharma, who lived three houses down and had a voice so clear and warm that adults were always telling her she should be on television. Priya was quiet and serious, with long black hair she wore in a braid and a habit of reading books about journalism that were way above her grade level.

"I want to do news," Priya said firmly when she saw the garage setup. "Real news. Not just fluff."

"What kind of news happens in Riverside Heights?" Kofi asked.

Priya stared at him. "Everything is news if you pay attention. Mrs. Chen's bakery is selling a new kind of mooncake. The city is thinking about changing the bus route that half the neighborhood depends on. Someone graffitied the wall behind the laundromat with a really beautiful mural and nobody knows who did it."

"Those are actually good stories," Kofi admitted.

"Of course they are. I pay attention."

The fourth member was Sam Torres, a freckled kid with reddish-brown hair and an enormous collection of music. Sam's parents were both musicians — his mother played violin in the city orchestra and his father was a sound engineer at a recording studio downtown. Sam had inherited their ears and their equipment. He showed up at the garage with a mixing board that looked like it belonged to NASA.

"Where did you get that?" Marta whispered.

"My dad's backup. He said we could borrow it as long as we don't spill anything on it." Sam set it on the workbench and began connecting cables with the casual expertise of someone who'd been around sound equipment since before he could walk. "I can also bring speakers, a proper microphone, and some headphones."

"Sam," Marta said solemnly, "you might be the most important person I've ever met."

"I know," Sam said, grinning.

The building took a week and a half. Every day after school, the four of them gathered in the garage. Kofi and Marta assembled the transmitter, following the instructions step by step. Kofi was patient and precise, double-checking every connection. Marta was impatient and creative, occasionally trying to skip ahead, which Kofi would catch with a gentle "that's step fourteen, Marta, we're on step seven."

Sam set up the audio equipment, running cables along the garage walls and positioning the microphone on a stand made from a music stand and some duct tape. He tested sound levels by having everyone speak into the microphone while he adjusted dials on the mixing board, nodding or frowning until everything sounded right.

"Say something," he told Priya.

"Testing, one two three."

"No, say something real. The mic picks up when you're being natural versus when you're performing."

Priya thought for a moment. "Yesterday I saw a hummingbird hovering outside my kitchen window, and I thought about how something that small can fly a thousand miles without stopping."

Sam's eyes lit up behind the mixing board. "That's it. That's the sound we want."

Priya went pink but looked pleased.

"Why do I get science?" Kofi asked.

"Because you explained photosynthesis to me last week and I actually understood it for the first time in my life."

"That's because your teacher explains it wrong."

"See? You're a natural."

They also needed an antenna. Marta's father helped them build one from copper wire and PVC pipe, mounting it on the garage roof one evening while her mother watched nervously from below.

"Is this safe?" her mother called up.

"Completely safe, mi amor," her father called back, which was what he always said, even the time he'd accidentally electrified the garden fence.

By the following Wednesday — twelve days after the transmitter kit arrived — everything was ready. The transmitter was assembled and connected. The microphone was tested. The mixing board hummed quietly. The antenna pointed toward the sky from the garage roof. The egg-carton soundproofing covered three walls and part of the ceiling, giving the garage the look of a very eccentric art installation.

Marta sat in the chair they'd positioned in front of the microphone. The others stood behind her, watching.

"Are we really doing this?" Marta asked.

"You're the one who wanted to," Kofi said.

"I know. I just — it felt like a dream before. Now it feels real."

"Real is better than a dream," Priya said. "Dreams don't change anything."

Marta took a deep breath. She looked at the transmitter's small red light, glowing steadily. She leaned toward the microphone.

"This is WKID Radio, broadcasting from Riverside Heights. My name is Marta Delgado, and this is our very first broadcast."

Her voice traveled through the cable to the mixing board, through the transmitter, up the antenna, and out into the air — invisible waves spreading in every direction like ripples in a pond, carrying her words to anyone in the neighborhood who happened to be listening.

For a moment, the garage was completely silent except for the soft hum of equipment.

Then Sam pumped his fist. Priya let out a breath she'd been holding. Kofi pushed his glasses up his nose and smiled.

"We're on the air," Marta said, and she could hear the wonder in her own voice. "We're actually on the air."

WKID Radio had begun.

The first week of broadcasting was a beautiful mess.

Marta had planned a careful schedule, but schedules, she quickly learned, were suggestions that reality mostly ignored. The music segment ran long because Sam got excited about a jazz playlist and forgot to watch the clock. Kofi's science segment was cut short when he accidentally knocked the microphone off the stand while demonstrating centrifugal force with a bucket of water. Priya's news report went perfectly, which made everyone else feel worse by comparison.

But people listened.

At first, it was just a handful — Marta's parents, Kofi's older sister, a few curious neighbors who'd heard about the station through the kid grapevine that ran through Riverside Heights faster than any Wi-Fi signal. But by Wednesday, Mrs. Okoro showed up at the garage with a plate of chin chin cookies and said she'd been listening while cooking dinner.

"I heard that boy talking about cumulus clouds," she said, pointing at Kofi. "Very educational. My husband fell asleep listening, which is a compliment. He only falls asleep when he's relaxed."

Mr. Pham stopped Marta on the street and asked if he could be interviewed about his pigeons. "People think they're just birds," he said earnestly. "But they're athletes. Scholars. Some of them can find their way home from two hundred miles away. Can you do that?"

"I can barely find my way home from the grocery store," Marta admitted.

"Then you need a pigeon."

The Hernandez twins — Diego and Elena, who were nine and the best beatboxers in the entire zip code — asked for a regular music slot. They called it "Twin Beats" and it was immediately the most popular segment on the station.

Mrs. Greenbaum called Marta's mother to ask if the station could do a weekly lost-pet report. "Mittens is gone again," she said. "Orange tabby. No sense of direction. Unlike your pigeons, Mr. Pham."

Old Mr. Wallace knocked on the garage door one afternoon and stood there in his newsboy cap and suspenders, holding a cane he didn't really need. "I hear you're running a radio station," he said.

"Yes, sir," Marta said.

"I used to listen to radio when I was your age. Before television ruined everything." He looked around the garage, taking in the egg cartons on the walls, the tangle of cables, the handwritten schedule on butcher paper. "It's beautiful," he said, and his voice cracked a little. "Would you let an old man tell some stories?"

So they gave Mr. Wallace a weekly segment called "Once Upon a Time in Riverside Heights." He'd sit in the chair with his eyes half-closed and talk about the neighborhood as it was forty years ago — the jazz club on Pine Street, the Italian bakery that made bread so good people drove from three towns away, the time it snowed so much in April that the whole neighborhood built a snow fort the size of a house.

Marta noticed something happening that she hadn't anticipated. People who listened to WKID started talking to each other more. Not about the radio station — about the things they'd heard on it. Mrs. Okoro told Priya she'd gone to the community garden for the first time after hearing a segment about it. The Hernandez twins' mother said she'd introduced herself to Mr. Wallace after listening to one of his stories, and they'd had coffee together.

"It's connecting people," Priya said one afternoon as they sat in the garage organizing the week's programming. She had her journalist's notebook open — a small green thing she carried everywhere. "The station. It's actually connecting people who live on the same street but never really talked."

"That's what radio is supposed to do," Sam said. He was fiddling with the mixing board, as he always was. "My dad says the original idea of radio was to be the great equalizer. Everyone hears the same signal. Nobody's excluded."

"That's a nice thought," Kofi said. He was reading a book about electricity — he'd gotten interested in how the transmitter worked and was now three books deep into a self-guided education on radio engineering. "But not everyone's listening yet."

"Give it time," Marta said.

"No," Kofi said, looking up from his book. "I mean, we should be thinking about who's not listening and why. Are we broadcasting things they care about? Are we talking about the stuff that actually matters to them?"

It was a Kofi question — the kind that sounded simple but opened a door to something much bigger. Marta chewed on it for the rest of the day. Who weren't they reaching? What stories weren't they telling?

That night, she walked through the neighborhood just before sunset. She passed the community garden, where a woman she didn't recognize was watering lettuce. She passed the laundromat with its mysterious mural — a huge painting of hands in every skin color, reaching toward each other across a field of flowers. She passed Mr. Pham's house and heard the soft cooing of pigeons.

She stopped at the corner of Maple and Pine and looked at the wooden bulletin board that had stood there for as long as anyone could remember. It was covered with flyers — a babysitting service, a yoga class, a lost cat poster that was definitely from Mrs. Greenbaum. But underneath all of these, half-hidden and partly torn, was a notice she hadn't seen before.

It was on official letterhead from the City Planning Commission. The language was dense and full of words like "rezoning" and "variance application" and "commercial development proposal." Marta read it three times, and each time her stomach sank a little further.

Someone wanted to tear down the community garden.

Not "someone." A development company called Meridian Properties. They wanted to demolish the garden and the small green space next to it and build a parking lot for a strip mall being constructed on the next block.

There was going to be a public hearing at City Hall in three weeks. The notice had been posted six days ago.

Marta pulled the notice off the bulletin board, carefully peeling away the tape so she wouldn't rip it. She folded it and put it in her pocket.

Then she ran all the way to Kofi's house.

Kofi read the notice under the porch light while Marta paced back and forth on his front steps.

"This can't be right," she said. "They can't just tear down the community garden. People depend on it. Mrs. Okoro grows half her vegetables there. The Nguyens have a plot. My abuela has a plot. There are flowers that have been growing there for years."

"They can, technically," Kofi said, his eyes still on the paper. "The land belongs to the city. The garden is on a year-to-year lease. If the city decides to rezone it for commercial use, the lease ends."

"How do you know that?"

"I read the community garden's website last year when I did a report on urban agriculture."

"Of course you did." Marta sat down next to him. "So what do we do?"

Kofi folded the notice and handed it back. "The public hearing is in three weeks. That's when people can show up and tell the planning commission why the garden should stay. But look at this thing — it's in tiny print, hidden under a stack of flyers. I bet most people in the neighborhood don't even know about it."

"That's the point, isn't it?" Marta said, and there was an edge in her voice. "They don't want people to know until it's too late."

"Maybe. Or maybe they're just following the minimum legal notification requirements and don't care if people actually see it."

"Same thing."

Kofi didn't argue. They sat in silence for a moment, listening to the crickets and the distant sound of someone's television.

"Marta," Kofi said quietly, "we have a radio station."

She looked at him. He looked at her. The idea didn't need to be said out loud — it was already alive between them.

The next afternoon, all four of them sat in the garage-turned-studio, the notice unfolded on the workbench. Priya had already done research, because Priya always did research.

"Meridian Properties," she read from her notebook. "They've done three developments in the county in the last two years. A strip mall in Fairview, an apartment complex in Cedar Park, and a warehouse near the highway. Their CEO is a man named Gregory Dalton."

"Have they ever demolished a community garden before?" Sam asked.

"I couldn't find a record of that specifically. But in Cedar Park, they did pave over a vacant lot where people had been growing wildflowers." Priya looked up. "Nobody organized against it there. It just happened."

"Because nobody knew," Marta said.

"Or nobody thought they could do anything about it," Kofi added.

Marta stood up and uncapped a marker. On the butcher-paper schedule, she drew a big star next to the afternoon broadcast slot. "Here's what I think," she said. "We use WKID to tell people what's happening. Not in a mean way. Not in a yelling way. Just the facts. What's being proposed, when the hearing is, and what people can do."

"Straight news reporting," Priya said, nodding.

"And stories," Marta continued. "We interview the people who use the garden. We let them talk about what it means to them. We let the neighborhood hear their own neighbors, in their own words."

"What about the developer?" Kofi asked. "If we're going to be fair, we should try to get their side too."

Marta made a face but nodded. "You're right. We should. Can you find contact information for Meridian Properties?"

"Already on it," Priya said, scribbling in her notebook.

Sam, who had been quiet, spoke up. "I want to record sounds from the garden. Birdsong. Wind through the sunflowers. The sound of water from the hose. If we play those on the station between segments, people will hear what they'd be losing."

Everyone stared at him.

"What?" he said. "Sound is my thing."

"Sam," Marta said for the second time in their friendship, "you might be the most important person I've ever met."

Marta recorded interviews at the community garden the next day. She brought the portable microphone Sam had rigged up — a handheld unit connected to a small digital recorder — and walked between the raised beds, talking to everyone she found.

Mrs. Okoro was harvesting tomatoes. "This garden," she said, holding up a tomato the size of a softball, "is where I learned that my neighbor Mrs. Park grows the same peppers my mother grew in Lagos. We traded seeds. Now I grow Korean peppers and she grows Nigerian peppers and we cook together every month. You think a parking lot can do that?"

Mr. Nguyen was weeding his lettuce bed. "I moved here from Vietnam when I was twenty. I didn't know anyone. I didn't speak English well. But the garden — the garden spoke a language I understood. You put a seed in the ground and you take care of it and it grows. It doesn't matter where you're from."

Twelve-year-old Yara was watering the sunflowers that lined the garden's fence. "I planted these from seeds my grandmother gave me before she passed. Every time they bloom, I think of her. You can't replace that."

Even Mr. Wallace had a plot, though he mostly grew herbs. "Basil," he told Marta's microphone. "Rosemary. Thyme. I've been growing them here for eight years. Cooking with fresh herbs is one of the small joys of my life, and at my age, small joys are the most important kind."

That night, Sam mixed the interviews with the garden sounds — birdsong layered under Mrs. Okoro's voice, the rustle of leaves beneath Mr. Nguyen's words, the gentle splash of water as Yara spoke about her grandmother's sunflowers.

When they played it back in the garage, Priya had tears in her eyes. Kofi took off his glasses and cleaned them, which was what he did when he didn't want anyone to see his expression. Sam just nodded quietly, satisfied.

Marta hit the broadcast button, and the stories went out over the airwaves.

Within two days of the broadcast, Marta's mother told her that people were talking about the garden at the grocery store, at church, at the bus stop. "My phone hasn't stopped ringing," Mrs. Okoro told Marta, waving a wooden spoon for emphasis. "Everyone wants to know about the hearing. When is it? Where is it? What should they say? You've turned this neighborhood upside down, little one."

"Not upside down," Marta said. "Right side up."

At school, kids who had never spoken to Marta were suddenly at her lunch table. "I heard about the garden on your radio station," said a boy named Andre, who was in the fifth grade and usually too cool to talk to anyone younger. "My grandpa has a plot there. He grows collard greens. Are they seriously going to pave it?"

"They want to," Marta said. "But there's a hearing. People can speak."

"How do we help?"

That was the question Marta heard more than any other that week. Not "what's happening?" but "how do we help?" It was as if the neighborhood had been waiting for someone to ask the question, and now that it was in the air, everyone wanted to answer.

WKID ramped up its coverage. Priya did a daily news update on the garden situation, reporting any new information she found. She was meticulous — she verified facts, she cited sources, she even called the City Planning Commission and asked questions in a voice so professional that the clerk on the other end assumed he was talking to an adult.

"The public hearing is scheduled for April 22nd at 7 PM in the City Hall council chambers," Priya reported on the air. "Any resident may attend and speak. You do not need to register in advance. You simply show up and sign in."

Kofi researched the environmental and social benefits of community gardens. On his science segment, he presented findings about how gardens reduced air pollution, provided habitat for pollinators, lowered neighborhood temperatures in summer, and improved mental health for the people who tended them.

"A study from the University of Pennsylvania found that neighborhoods with community gardens had lower crime rates and higher property values," he said into the microphone, his voice carrying the quiet confidence it always had when he was talking about data. "These aren't just gardens. They're infrastructure."

Sam continued recording sounds from the garden and the neighborhood. He captured the Hernandez twins beatboxing near the sunflowers. He recorded Mrs. Chen describing her favorite garden flowers in Mandarin and then in English. He mixed everything into a daily sound portrait that played at the end of each broadcast — a two-minute audio snapshot of Riverside Heights that was somehow more powerful than any argument.

And Marta interviewed. She talked to everyone — longtime residents and newcomers, elderly and young, quiet and loud. She discovered that the community garden was more than a place to grow vegetables. It was where the neighborhood held its summer potluck. It was where the kids had their Easter egg hunt. It was where a local artist had built a mosaic bench out of broken tiles donated by every family on the block.

"We're all in that bench," said the artist, a young woman named Lucia. "Every family contributed tiles. Some people brought pieces of plates that had been in their families for generations. That mosaic is a map of this neighborhood's soul."

Marta played the interview on the air and then sat in the garage afterward, thinking about mosaics and neighborhoods and how everything was connected.

Priya did manage to reach Meridian Properties. She called their office number and was transferred three times before reaching a communications assistant named Cheryl, who gave a prepared statement that Priya read on the air.

"Meridian Properties is committed to responsible development that benefits the community," the statement said. "The proposed parking facility will serve the new commercial center, creating jobs and increasing economic activity in the area. We welcome input from residents at the public hearing."

Marta noticed the statement didn't mention the garden at all. As if it didn't exist.

"That's how they do it," Mr. Wallace told her during his recording session that week. His voice was steady but sad. "They talk about jobs and economy and development. They use big words that sound positive. But they never name what they're destroying, because naming it would make it real."

"We'll name it," Marta said.

"You already have, child. You already have."

The days before the hearing took on a rhythm. Every afternoon, the garage buzzed with activity. Marta, Kofi, Priya, and Sam were joined by the Hernandez twins, who had taken charge of promotional efforts and had made flyers about the hearing that they posted all over the neighborhood. Yara, the girl with the sunflowers, started a petition that she carried from door to door, collecting signatures in a composition notebook.

One evening, as Marta was locking up the garage after a late broadcast, she noticed a car parked across the street that she didn't recognize. It was dark and expensive-looking, the kind of car that stood out in Riverside Heights. A man sat in the driver's seat, looking at his phone.

He glanced up, and for a moment his eyes met Marta's. Then he pulled away.

Marta watched the car disappear around the corner. She wasn't sure why, but the back of her neck prickled.

She told Kofi about it the next day.

"It's probably nothing," he said. But he didn't sound convinced.

"But you started it. You had the courage to start." He looked at her. "Don't ever lose that, Marta. The willingness to start. Most people wait for someone else. You didn't."

Marta sat with him in the garden for a while, neither of them talking, just watching the morning light move across the flowers and hearing the birds sing their unnecessary, beautiful songs.

By mid-morning, the core four had gathered in the garage. The equipment hummed softly. The egg cartons on the walls had become so familiar that the garage wouldn't have looked right without them.
