She had ordered it custom from a woodworker in Hamtramck — a man named Youssef who had fled Aleppo with his family in 2014 and brought nothing but his hands and his knowledge of cedar. The table was made of reclaimed oak from a demolished church on Michigan Avenue, and Youssef had sanded it so smooth that people instinctively reached out to touch it when they first sat down. That was the point. Nadia had learned early in her career that when people touched something beautiful together, something shifted in the room. Not enough to solve anything, but enough to remind them that they were human beings sharing a physical space, breathing the same air, sitting at the same table.

Nadia was forty-three years old. She had dark hair that she wore pulled back in a low bun, brown eyes that people described as "warm" when they liked her and "unreadable" when they didn't, and the kind of face that held its age the way good architecture does — with lines that revealed rather than diminished. She was not beautiful in the way magazines meant, but she was the kind of woman people looked at twice, not because of how she appeared but because of how she appeared to be listening.

She was listening now.

Across the round table sat Gerald Hawkins and Maria Santos, and between them was the kind of silence that has teeth.

Gerald was seventy-one, a retired autoworker who had lived on Oakwood Boulevard in the Springwells Village neighborhood for forty-six years. He was a large man, with hands that had spent decades pressing steel and a face that had settled into a permanent expression of bewildered indignation, as if the entire twenty-first century were a personal insult. He wore a Detroit Lions cap that he refused to remove indoors, and his wedding ring — he'd been a widower for three years — was worn so thin that it looked like it might dissolve entirely, which seemed to Nadia like a metaphor she would never say out loud.

Maria was thirty-eight, the daughter of Mexican immigrants, the director of a nonprofit called Southwest Futures that was building affordable housing in the very neighborhood Gerald had watched transform around him. She was small and fierce, with close-cropped hair and silver rings on every finger, and she had the particular intensity of someone who has been underestimated so many times that she has learned to arrive at every meeting already on the offensive.

They had been arguing about a vacant lot on Junction Street for seven months.

"I have nothing against the woman," Gerald said, in the tone of someone who very clearly had something against the woman. "But that lot was Earl Patterson's lot. He ran a repair shop there for thirty years. My wife got her Buick fixed there every spring. You can't just come in and—"

"Mr. Hawkins." Nadia's voice was steady. Not commanding, exactly — she had learned long ago that commanding voices make people defensive, and defensive people build walls. Her voice was more like a hand on a shoulder. Present. Grounding. "You were telling me about what that lot means to you."

Gerald blinked. He had been preparing for an argument, and Nadia had redirected him toward a feeling, which was like expecting to hit a wall and instead falling into water.

"It means — it's my neighborhood. I watched this neighborhood when there wasn't nobody who wanted to be here. After the plants closed. After the riots. When you couldn't give these houses away. I stayed. My wife stayed. Earl stayed. And now—" He gestured broadly at Maria, at the window, at all of Detroit beyond it. "Now it's worth something, and suddenly everybody's got plans."

Maria opened her mouth, and Nadia raised one finger — just slightly, a movement so small it could have been involuntary. Maria closed her mouth. She had been through this process before with Nadia and knew the rhythm.

"Maria," Nadia said. "Tell me what you heard Gerald say."

Maria's jaw tightened. This was the part she hated. "He said he stayed when others left. He said the lot has personal meaning to him. He said he feels like outsiders are coming in to profit from his loyalty."

"Is that what you said, Gerald?"

Gerald considered. "More or less. But she left out the part about—"

"We'll get to the parts she left out. Maria, tell me what you hear under what he said."

Maria was quiet for a moment. "Fear," she said finally. "He's afraid of being erased."

The room changed. Nadia felt it — that almost imperceptible shift that happens when one person truly sees another. It didn't last. Gerald's face reddened and he started to protest, and the moment passed like a cloud shadow. But it had happened, and Nadia filed it away. These moments were currency. You saved them and spent them later.

"I'm not afraid of anything," Gerald said. "I'm angry. There's a difference."

"There is," Nadia agreed. "And we'll honor both. Maria, would you like to share what the Junction Street project means to you?"

She did not offer solutions. That was not her job — not yet, not today. Today was about something more fundamental. Today was about getting two people to agree on what the problem actually was, which in Nadia's experience was about eighty percent of solving it.

At five o'clock, she walked them both to the elevator. Gerald shook her hand with the crushing grip of a man who had been taught that handshakes were character tests. Maria nodded — she was not a handshaker — and said, "Same time next week?"

"Same time next week," Nadia confirmed.

She watched them walk to the elevator, standing five feet apart, not speaking. When the doors closed, she returned to her office and sat in the chair that was slightly off-center at the round table — her chair, the mediator's chair, positioned so that she was equidistant from wherever two parties sat, a geometry she had calibrated with actual measurements during her first week in this office, nine years ago.

She smiled and put the phone down.

There was a folder on her desk — the Mehta case, a family inheritance dispute that had been festering for two years and was finally coming to her. And beneath that, a message from the Interfaith Council about a situation at a mosque in Dearborn that was threatening to become national news. And beneath that, a voicemail from her sister Shirin that she had not listened to.

Nadia looked out the window at the January dark. The city glittered coldly — the towers of the Renaissance Center, the old train station they were renovating, the bridge to Canada lit up like a spine of light over the black river. Detroit was a city of arguments. Arguments about money and race and history and what was owed and by whom. Arguments about tearing down and building up. Arguments about who belonged.

She loved it. She loved it the way you love a difficult person — with full knowledge of their flaws, with no illusions, with a stubborn belief that underneath the anger and the hurt and the decades of accumulated grievance, there was something worth fighting for.

Her phone buzzed again. Not James this time. Her mother.

Nadia put the phone face-down on the desk. She would call Shirin. Eventually. When she had the energy for whatever new crisis Shirin was navigating — which was always, in some way, the same old crisis, the one that had been between them for fifteen years, since the day Nadia had told her family that she had become a Bahá'í.

She opened her laptop and began to type her notes from the Hawkins-Santos session. She was meticulous about documentation — not because she was required to be, though she was, but because she believed that writing things down was a form of respect. When you recorded what someone said, you were telling them that their words mattered, that their truth had been received, that they had been heard.

And being heard, Nadia had come to believe, was the first and most necessary form of justice.

It was small — one bedroom, a galley kitchen, a living room with bookshelves on every wall — and it was hers in a way that felt important. She had moved here after her divorce from Arash, seven years ago, and had spent the first month sleeping on an air mattress and reading Rúmí by flashlight because the electricity hadn't been connected yet. Now the apartment was warm and full, the bookshelves overflowing with everything from Mary Oliver to Bahá'u'lláh, from legal textbooks to mystery novels, from her mother's old Persian poetry collections to graphic novels she had picked up at the library book sale.

She hung up her coat, turned on the kettle, and stood in the kitchen listening to the water heat. This was her ritual — the kettle, the waiting, the silence. After a day spent in the churning waters of other people's conflicts, she needed this. The sound of water approaching its boiling point. The ceramic mug with the chipped handle. The Earl Grey that she drank too strong and too hot, the way her father used to drink his tea.

Her father. Hossein Khorasani, engineer, immigrant, skeptic, dead now for eleven years. He had come to Michigan in 1979 with a pregnant wife, two suitcases, and the resigned clarity of a man who understood that the country he loved had decided it did not love him back. He had worked for Ford for twenty-eight years. He had mowed his lawn every Saturday. He had watched the news with the volume too loud and shouted at the television in Farsi. He had loved his daughters fiercely and expressed it almost never.

And he had never understood why Nadia had left Islam for what he called "this other thing."

"It's not leaving," Nadia had tried to explain, at the kitchen table in the house in Dearborn, twenty years ago. "The Bahá'í Faith honors Muhammad. It honors all the prophets. It's a continuation, not a rejection."

Her father had looked at her the way he looked at a blueprint that contained a fundamental error — with patience, because the error could be corrected, but with weariness, because the correction would take time.

Nadia poured her tea and sat on the couch. The apartment was quiet except for the radiator's percussion and the distant sound of a siren — Detroit's perpetual background music. She opened her laptop and looked at the Mehta file again, but she wasn't reading. She was thinking about Gerald Hawkins and the look on his face when Maria Santos had said the word fear.

He had flinched. People always flinched when someone named their fear accurately. It was the flinch of being seen, which was both what people wanted most and what they could least bear.

She had wanted to deny it. Instead she had laughed, which was worse, because the laugh was true.

James. She should have said yes to drinks. But there was something about James that made her careful — not because he was dangerous, but because he wasn't. He was kind. He was funny. Her phone lit up. Shirin again. This time a voicemail. Nadia stared at the notification the way she stared at difficult case files — with the knowledge that she would eventually have to open it, and the equally strong desire to put it off until she had more information, more energy, more of whatever it took to deal with her sister.

At eleven o'clock, she brushed her teeth, washed her face, and stood for a moment at the bathroom mirror. The face that looked back at her was tired but not defeated. She saw her father's cheekbones, her mother's mouth, and something in the eyes that was entirely her own — a quality of attention that people either trusted immediately or found unsettling.

She said her prayers. Not the formal ones — it was late, and she was tired — but the short, sustaining ones. The ones that were less about words and more about alignment, about turning the mind toward something larger than the day's accumulation of small struggles.

Then she climbed into bed, and the city hummed around her, and she slept.

The Mehta siblings arrived separately, which told Nadia everything she needed to know about the current state of their relationship.

Rajesh came first, fifteen minutes early, in a navy blazer and khakis that suggested he had dressed for a job interview rather than a mediation session. He was forty-five, with their father's angular face softened by their mother's round chin, and he carried a leather briefcase that he placed on the table with the ceremonial gravity of a man presenting evidence. He shook Nadia's hand with exactly the right amount of pressure — he had read an article about handshakes — and said, "I appreciate you taking this case, Ms. Khorasani. I know it's complicated."

"All cases are complicated," Nadia said. "That's why people bring them to me."

He smiled thinly. A man who appreciated competence but was not sure he trusted it in others.

Priya arrived seven minutes late, which may or may not have been intentional. She was forty-two, and where Rajesh was contained and precise, Priya was all motion — jangling bracelets, a scarf that was falling off one shoulder, a phone she was still talking into as she walked through the door. She ended her call with "I have to go, I'm at the thing," which reduced two years of legal dispute to "the thing," and Nadia filed that away too.

"Sorry," Priya said, not sounding sorry. "Parking in this city is a human rights violation."

"Please sit wherever you're comfortable," Nadia said.

They chose seats on opposite sides of the table, exactly as far apart as the round table allowed. The geometry of estrangement.

"We've been having conversations for two years," Rajesh said. "Through lawyers. They haven't gotten us anywhere."

"Adversarial conversations rarely do," Nadia said. "The purpose of mediation is different. We're not trying to win. We're trying to understand."

Priya made a sound that was almost a laugh. "Understand what? He wants everything. I want what's fair. There's not much to understand."

"I want what Dad wanted," Rajesh said, and his voice changed on the word Dad — it cracked, just slightly, like a plate with a hairline fracture. He hadn't expected it, and he covered it quickly, straightening in his chair. "He had a plan for the estate. Priya is the one who—"

"A plan. You mean the will that he wrote in 2019 when he was already—"

"He was not—"

"Okay." Nadia's voice, the hand on the shoulder again. "Let's slow down. I want to hear from each of you, one at a time. Not about the will. Not about the lawyers. I want to hear about your father."

The room went still.

"Vikram Mehta," Nadia said, looking at her notes. "He passed away in April 2024. He was seventy-eight. He owned the house in Bloomfield Hills, the restaurant — Saffron — in Troy, and a collection of paintings, primarily contemporary Indian art. Is that correct?"

They both nodded.

"Tell me about him. Rajesh, you first."

Rajesh looked down at his briefcase as if the answer might be inside it. "He was... exacting. Brilliant. He came here from Jaipur in 1972 with almost nothing. Built everything himself. The restaurant was his dream — he always said that food was the closest thing to a universal language. He was — he could be difficult. Demanding. But he loved us. In his way."

"In his way," Priya repeated, and the two words carried fifteen years of therapy.

"What was his way?" Nadia asked.

Rajesh shifted. "He showed love through expectation. He expected the best from us because he believed we were capable of it."

"And when you didn't meet his expectations?"

A pause. "He was disappointed. He didn't punish us. He was just... disappointed. Which was worse."

Nadia turned to Priya. "Tell me about your father."

Priya's bracelets clinked as she crossed her arms. "I loved my dad. I want that on the record, or whatever this is. I loved him. But Rajesh is describing a man who doesn't quite exist. Dad wasn't just 'exacting.' He was controlling. He decided what we would study, who we would marry, what we would do with our lives. Rajesh went along with it. I didn't. And that's — that's the whole thing, isn't it? That's why we're here."

"Because you didn't go along with it?"

"Because I left. I left Troy. I left the restaurant. I went to art school in New York, which Dad considered roughly equivalent to joining a cult. I married someone he didn't approve of — Kyle, who is white and midwestern and a high school teacher, and who my father treated like a chair he kept bumping into. And when I came back to Michigan five years ago, after my marriage ended, Dad and I tried to — we tried. But it was too late. Or maybe it was too hard. Or maybe we were too much alike, which is what Mom always said."

"Your mother?"

"She passed in 2018. Before Dad. She was the — she was the bridge. Without her, Dad and I didn't know how to talk to each other."

Nadia let the silence sit. She had learned that silence, in mediation, was not empty. It was a space where truth could settle, like sediment in water, revealing what was underneath.

"Rajesh," she said. "What did you hear Priya say?"

He was quiet for a moment. "She said she loved Dad. She said she felt controlled. She said leaving was an act of — independence, I suppose. And that losing Mom made it harder to reconnect with Dad."

"Priya, is that accurate?"

"More or less."

"What would you add?"

The room shifted. Rajesh's jaw tightened.

"He did not write you out of the will," Rajesh said carefully. "He left you the paintings."

"The paintings," Priya said. "Which he promised to the Cranbrook Art Museum. So he left me something and then gave it away. Which is the most Dad thing imaginable."

Nadia took a breath. She could feel the shape of this case now — not the legal shape, which was for lawyers, but the human shape. Two children who had responded to the same demanding father in opposite ways. One had stayed and complied. One had left and rebelled. And the father, in death as in life, had set them against each other.

"I want to propose something," Nadia said. "Before we talk about the house or the restaurant or the paintings, I want us to spend some time talking about what you each believe your father was trying to do with this will. Not what the legal language says. What he was trying to say to you."

Rajesh frowned. "Is that relevant?"

"In my experience, it's the only thing that's relevant."

After the session, Nadia sat alone at the round table and ate a sandwich from the deli downstairs. Turkey on rye, mustard, no tomato. She ate the same lunch almost every day, a habit she recognized as both efficient and slightly depressing.

Her phone rang. The Interfaith Council.

"Nadia, it's Pastor David Mitchell. Do you have a minute?"

David Mitchell was the chair of the Detroit Interfaith Council, a Methodist minister with a booming voice and the political instincts of a ward boss. Nadia liked him. He was a man of genuine faith who also understood that genuine faith, in a city like Detroit, required genuine strategy.

"I have about ten minutes," she said.

"The mosque situation," he said, dropping the pleasantries. "It's getting worse. The new imam — you've heard of him? Imam Hassan al-Rashid?"

"I've heard the name."

"Young, charismatic, progressive. Which is great, except that about a third of his congregation thinks he's too progressive, and they've been — well, there's been some ugliness. Internal disputes that are starting to spill over. Protests outside the mosque. Some of the Dearborn old guard are saying he's not a real Muslim, whatever that means. And then on the other side, you've got people from outside the community — activists, media — who are using it as a platform for their own thing."

"What are you asking me to do?"

Nadia closed her eyes. She already had the Hawkins-Santos case and the Mehta case. She had a roster of smaller cases that paid the bills. She had her mother and Shirin and whatever was happening with James that she kept not addressing.

"Send me the file," she said. "I'll look at it."

"You're a saint."

"I'm a mediator. Saints work for free."

He laughed and hung up.

She finished her sandwich and looked at the afternoon light coming through the window. It was weak, January light — more suggestion than substance — but it caught the surface of the round table and turned the wood grain into something that looked almost like a topographic map. All those rings of growth, all those years of patient accumulation, laid bare by the saw and made beautiful by Youssef's hands.

It was the question she asked in almost every inheritance case, because inheritance was never about money. It was about love, and love, in families, was the most contested territory of all.

And the word felt like a door opening — just a crack, just enough to let in a draft of something she wasn't sure she was ready for.

The Al-Noor Islamic Center sat on Warren Avenue in east Dearborn, between a halal grocery and a storefront that had been, in successive incarnations, a barbershop, a tax preparer, and a phone repair shop, and was now vacant, its windows soaped over like closed eyes. The mosque itself was modest — a converted commercial building with a green dome added in the 1990s and a minaret that was really just a decorative tower, since the call to prayer was broadcast internally, this being Michigan and not Medina.

Nadia parked on a side street and sat in her car for a moment, looking at the building. She had been to Al-Noor before, years ago, for an interfaith event that David Mitchell had organized. She remembered the community hall with its fluorescent lights and folding tables, the women who had prepared an impossible quantity of food, the feeling of being simultaneously welcomed and observed — because she was Iranian, and because she had a Muslim name, and because people in communities under siege develop a radar for who belongs and who is visiting.

She was visiting. She had always been visiting, even when she was a child at the mosque her parents attended in Dearborn. She had prayed, she had fasted, she had memorized surahs, and she had felt — not nothing, that was not fair. She had felt something. But it was the feeling of wearing a beautiful coat that did not quite fit, that pulled at the shoulders and was too short in the sleeves. The words were true; she did not doubt the truth of Islam. Bahiyyih Nouri, a graduate student in social work from a Bahá'í family in Evanston, Illinois, who had the most extraordinary gift for listening that Nadia had ever encountered. Bahiyyih didn't just hear words; she heard the spaces between them. She heard what people meant underneath what they said. And she moved through the world with a kind of radical gentleness that Nadia had never seen before — not passivity, not weakness, but a gentleness that had steel in it, the way a river has steel in it when it cuts through rock.

Bahiyyih had not proselytized. That was not the Bahá'í way. She had simply lived, and Nadia had watched, and eventually Nadia had asked questions, and the answers had felt like the rest of the garment.

That had been twenty years ago. Bahiyyih was now in Haifa, working at the Bahá'í World Centre. They exchanged emails every few weeks — long, discursive emails about faith and work and the particular challenge of trying to build a better world when the current one kept insisting on its dysfunction.

Nadia got out of the car and walked to the mosque.

The community hall was set up for the meeting that David Mitchell had arranged — a preliminary conversation between representatives of the mosque, the neighboring Chaldean church (Our Lady of Chaldeans, two blocks east), and a neighborhood association that had formed in opposition to the mosque's proposed building expansion. There were twelve people in the room, which was both too many and not enough. Too many for intimacy, not enough for the full range of perspectives that Nadia could already sense were in play.

She recognized Imam Hassan al-Rashid immediately. He was younger than she had expected — mid-thirties, with a neat beard and wire-rimmed glasses that gave him the look of an earnest graduate student. He shook her hand with both of his, a gesture of warmth that felt genuine, and said, "Ms. Khorasani, thank you for being here. David speaks very highly of you."

"David is generous," Nadia said. "I appreciate you opening your community to this process."

The Chaldean delegation was led by a woman named Miriam Yaldo, who was approximately sixty and approximately five feet tall and approximately the most formidable person in the room. She was a deaconess at Our Lady of Chaldeans and the president of the Chaldean-American Cultural Association, and she had the particular authority of someone who has survived things that would have destroyed most people. She had come to America from Iraq in 1991, after the Gulf War, and she carried that history the way veterans carry shrapnel — invisibly, internally, always.

"We are not opposed to the mosque," Miriam said, before Nadia had even finished her opening remarks. "Let me be clear about that. We are opposed to the expansion as proposed, because it would eliminate the parking lot that serves both our church and the mosque, and because the construction timeline would make Warren Avenue impassable for eighteen months, and because nobody asked us."

"Nobody asked you," Nadia repeated.

"Nobody asked us."

This was, Nadia knew, the real complaint. Not parking, not traffic, not construction timelines. Nobody asked us. The fundamental human need to be consulted, to be considered, to have a seat at the table before the decisions are made.

She turned to the neighborhood association representative, a young man named Derek Chen who was clearly uncomfortable being there. He was twenty-eight, a recent transplant from Ann Arbor who worked in tech and had bought a house in the neighborhood six months ago. He had started the neighborhood association, he explained, because the expansion would reduce property values — at which point Miriam Yaldo shot him a look that could have curdled concrete, because in her world, people did not reduce community disputes to property values.

"Let me suggest a framework," Nadia said. "Before we talk about the expansion itself, I want us to talk about process. How decisions are made in this community. Who gets consulted. How information flows. Because I think that's where the real frustration is."

Imam Hassan nodded slowly. "That's fair. We — I — should have done more outreach before announcing the expansion. That was an error, and I take responsibility for it."

Miriam softened, just slightly. "Good. That's a start."

Derek opened his mouth, and Nadia could tell he was about to say something about property values again. She redirected.

"Derek, tell me about your experience moving into this neighborhood. What drew you here?"

He blinked. "The — well, the diversity, actually. I grew up in a suburb that was pretty homogeneous. I wanted to live somewhere that felt more like the real world."

"And what does the real world feel like, now that you're in it?"

He was quiet for a moment. "Harder than I expected," he admitted. "I didn't realize — I mean, I knew intellectually that there were different communities here, but I didn't understand how deep the roots went. I feel like I showed up at a family reunion where I'm not related to anybody."

Miriam's expression changed. Something in her eyes recognized something in his — the feeling of being an outsider, of not belonging, which she had carried for thirty-five years and which this young man was just beginning to understand.

"That is how we felt when we first came," Miriam said. "We were strangers everywhere. Now this is our home. But it took time."

It was a small moment of connection — fragile, imperfect — but Nadia saw it, and she held the space around it, letting it breathe.

The meeting lasted two hours. They did not resolve anything, which was exactly what Nadia had intended. This first session was about reconnaissance — mapping the emotional terrain, identifying the real needs beneath the stated positions, finding the points of potential connection.

As people filed out, Imam Hassan lingered.

"Ms. Khorasani," he said. "May I ask — are you Muslim?"

She had anticipated this question. "I was raised Muslim. My family is Muslim. I am Bahá'í."

"I have a colleague in Chicago who is Bahá'í," he said. "He told me once that the Bahá'í concept of consultation is very structured. Very intentional. Is that what you're doing here?"

"In a way," Nadia said carefully. She did not, as a rule, bring her faith into her professional work — not explicitly. But the imam had asked a direct question, and she believed in direct answers. "Bahá'í consultation is built on the idea that truth is many-sided. That no one person has the whole picture. That the purpose of discussion is not to win but to discover. I carry those principles into my work, yes."

"Truth is many-sided," the imam repeated. "That is a very generous idea."

"It's also a very demanding one," Nadia said. "It requires you to genuinely believe that the person you disagree with might have a piece of the truth that you're missing."

He smiled. "That is hard."

"That's why they pay me."

He laughed — a real laugh, unguarded — and she liked him for it.

She drove home through Dearborn, past the Arab-American National Museum, past the restaurants and bakeries that made this stretch of Michigan Avenue smell like the inside of her mother's kitchen, past the high school where her father had once attended a parent-teacher conference and argued with Nadia's chemistry teacher about the proper formulation of a mole ratio. Her father had been right about the mole ratio. He had been right about a great many things, and wrong about a few, and the ones he'd been wrong about — the ones that mattered — were the ones Nadia was still carrying.

Her phone rang through the car speakers. Shirin.

"I was married for five years," Nadia said. "Arash and I talked about it. We decided to wait. And then we decided to divorce. And then the question became moot."

"It's not moot. You're forty-three, not eighty."

"I'm aware of my age, James."

"Sorry. That was—"

"You should get a dog."

"You should mind your own business."

"I should. But I'm Nigerian. We don't have boundaries. We have opinions."

The way he said his ex-wife's name — with respect, with tenderness, with the particular ache of someone who still cared about a person they could no longer live with — told Nadia something important about James Okafor. "I was going to say that I'd like that."

Now he blinked. "You — really?"

"Don't look so surprised. It's insulting."

"She's scared."

"Of course she's scared. I'm scared. But crying in a parking garage does not improve the situation." She turned to Nadia. "You are not crying."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because you need someone to not be crying."

Her mother looked at her for a long moment. "You are the strong one. You have always been the strong one. Even when you were small — do you remember when your father lost his job at Ford? You were ten. Shirin was thirteen and she cried for days. You came to me in the kitchen and said, 'Maman, I have twenty-three dollars in my piggy bank. Is that enough to help?' Twenty-three dollars." She shook her head. "The strong one."

"I was ten. I didn't know how money worked."

"You knew how love worked. That is more important."

It was the kindest thing her mother had said to her in years, and it caught Nadia off guard, like a wave you see coming but can't brace for.

"Maman—"

"Don't. I am not dying today. I have a surgery date and a doctor who does not know what tahdig is, which is a failure of her education, and I have my daughters. That is enough for today."

She patted Nadia's arm with the brisk efficiency of a woman who was finished being emotional.

"Now. Take me home. I need to cook. I always cook when I'm worried."

"Pancreatic cancer," she said. "Localized. Operable. Surgery in three weeks."

"Nadia. I'm sorry."

"The doctor says it's treatable. The numbers are—"

"Forget the numbers. How are you?"

She closed her eyes. How am I. The question that was simultaneously the simplest and the hardest in the language.

"I'm — I'm doing what I do. Holding space. Managing the situation. Making sure everyone else is okay."

"That's what you do for other people. I'm asking about you."

"I know you are."

"And?"

"And I'm scared, James. I'm scared that my mother is going to die before we've figured out how to be okay with each other."

There it was. The truth she had not been able to say to Shirin, to her mother, to anyone. But she said it to James, over the phone, in her office, at four o'clock on a Tuesday afternoon, because he had asked and because he listened the way Bahiyyih listened — with his whole self, without judgment, without the urge to fix.

"Then you've got to figure it out," he said. "Not someday. Now. You've got to go be with your mother and stop keeping yourself at arm's length."

"It's not that simple."

"I didn't say it was simple. I said you've got to do it."

She was quiet for a moment.

"How are you so good at this?" she asked.

"My mother died in Lagos when I was twenty-two. Malaria. I was in the States, at Michigan, trying to finish my degree. She died on a Tuesday. I found out on a Wednesday. I couldn't get home for the funeral. I didn't even — I didn't get to say goodbye. So when I tell you that you've got to figure this out now, I'm telling you from a place of knowing what happens when you don't."

Nadia pressed her hand over her eyes.

"I'm sorry about your mother," she said.

"It was a long time ago. But it's also not. Time does strange things with grief."

"Yeah. It does."

"Listen," he said. "I'm going to bring dinner to your apartment tonight. Don't argue. I'll bring Nigerian food. My mother's recipe. You're going to eat it and you're going to tell me about your mother and we're going to sit with the hard stuff. That's the job."

"The job?"

"The human job. Being with each other in the hard parts. I thought you of all people would know that."

She almost smiled. "You're very bossy for a first date."

"Second date. Saturday was the first."

"Second date, then. Fine. Seven o'clock?"

"Seven o'clock."

It was what she did for a living. She sat with people in their hardest moments and helped them find a way through. But somewhere along the way, she had gotten so good at being the one who helped that she had forgotten how to be the one who needed help.

That, she thought, was going to have to change.

I remember meeting her once — that Nowruz dinner in 2008, when you brought me home and introduced me as your friend from graduate school, and she looked at me with those sharp eyes and said, "You are the one who changed my daughter." You are doing that work. And I want you to know that it matters. Not in the abstract. Not in the theological. In the real, specific, dirt-under-your-fingernails way that all important things matter.

My mother is having surgery on the 12th. Please pray for her. Not because I think God needs reminding, but because I find comfort in knowing that someone in Haifa, on the slopes of Mount Carmel, in a garden that is an argument for beauty, is holding my mother in her heart.

"It's worse than last time," he said quietly. "The protests — they started last week. It's mostly people from outside the community, but some are from inside. Members of the mosque who feel I'm — who disagree with my approach."

"What specifically?"

"I've been reaching out to the neighboring communities. Interfaith dialogues. Open houses. Some of the older members feel I'm being too — accommodating. That I'm compromising. There's a faction led by a man named Brother Yusuf — an elder, very respected — who thinks I'm more interested in being liked by non-Muslims than in serving the community."

"Is that true?"

He gave her a sharp look, then softened. "No. But I understand why it looks that way. I'm thirty-six years old, I'm from Toronto, and I've been here eight months. I don't have the history that Brother Yusuf has. I haven't earned the trust that comes from decades of being here. And I'm trying to do things differently, which to some people looks like doing things wrong."

"What is Brother Yusuf's main concern about the expansion?"

"He supports the expansion. He just doesn't want to give the non-Muslim community any say in how it happens. He sees the community meeting as — as my giving away the mosque's autonomy."

"Let's go in," she said.

The expansion itself was more complicated than parking and construction timelines. At its core, it was a question about what a religious institution owed its neighbors. The mosque wanted to build a community center — a space for education, social services, youth programs. These were good things. Everyone agreed they were good things. But the building would change the physical and social landscape of the block, and the people who lived and worked on that block had not been asked if they wanted their landscape changed.

"It's not that we don't want a community center," George Haddad said. His hardware store had been on Warren Avenue for twenty-two years. He was a thick, weathered man with hands that had sold a million bolts and nails. "It's that we already have a community. It works. Maybe not perfectly, but it works. And when you build something this big, it changes the balance. More traffic, more people, more — presence. You understand? We're not against you. We're just — we want to make sure there's still room for us."

Imam Hassan listened carefully. "George," he said. "I hear you. And I want you to know that the community center is not meant to replace what already exists. It's meant to add to it. But I accept that we should have had this conversation much earlier. I accept responsibility for that failure."

"You keep saying that," Fatima interjected. She was twenty-four, a graduate student in public health at U of M, and she had the impatient energy of someone who wanted to stop talking about process and start talking about action. "You keep apologizing. But apologizing doesn't solve anything. What are we actually going to do?"

"We're going to build a process," Nadia said. "That's why we're here. Not to make decisions today, but to agree on how decisions will be made. Who needs to be at the table. What information is needed. What values will guide the conversation."

Fatima looked skeptical. "Process. That sounds like bureaucracy."

"Process is what distinguishes a community from a crowd," Nadia said. "A crowd reacts. A community deliberates."

Miriam Yaldo, who had been quiet for most of the meeting, spoke. "When we came from Iraq," she said, and the room fell silent, because when Miriam Yaldo spoke, people listened. "When we came from Iraq, we had nothing. We did not know the language. We did not know the customs. We did not know anyone. And the people on this street — the Arab families, the old Polish families, even the ones who did not know what a Chaldean was — they helped us. Not because they understood us. Because they chose to. "Layla Hanna."

"Layla, would you be willing to join the community mediation process? We meet every two weeks. Your perspective is exactly what we need."

Layla studied her. "You're the mediator?"

"I am."

"You're good. I watched through the window."

"The window?"

"The community hall has windows. I stood outside and watched. You're good at making people listen to each other."

"Thank you. Will you come to the next meeting?"

"I'll think about it."

Nadia gave her a card. Layla took it, looked at it, and put it in her pocket.

"You know what the real problem is?" Layla said. "It's not the building. It's not the parking. And then he wrote the will, and the paintings went to the museum, and Rajesh got everything else, and now — now I'm fighting for what I told him I didn't want, because I didn't mean it. I was angry. Nadia sat with this. It was a confession, and confessions in mediation were delicate things — they could break a case open or blow it apart, depending on how they were handled.

"I'm suggesting that vulnerability might accomplish what fighting hasn't."

A long pause.

"I'll think about it," Priya said.

After they hung up, Nadia sat at her desk and thought about the Mehta case. It was, she realized, not really an inheritance case at all. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, a dinner with James, and a phone call with Bahiyyih, and the slow, persistent, terrifying work of learning to let people in.

You were right. I am lonely. Or I was. Something is changing — several somethings — and I don't know yet what shape they'll take. My mother is sick. My sister is scared. A man brought me Nigerian food and told me to stop keeping people at arm's length. And I said yes to dinner, which doesn't sound like much, but for me it was seismic.

I keep thinking about something you said years ago — that the spiritual life is not about perfection but about practice. That we are all practicing, every day, getting better or getting worse at the business of being human. I think I have been practicing avoidance, and I need to practice something else.

Anyway. Tell me about Haifa. Tell me something beautiful.

The people who lived there did so out of necessity or stubbornness or both, and they carried the accumulated weight of decades of disinvestment, neglect, and the particular exhaustion of being poor in a rich country that had decided they were invisible.

"Send me the file," she said.

"You're the best, Nadia."

"So people keep telling me. I'd prefer a raise."

She needed help.

"James," she said, calling him from her car in the parking garage. "I need a co-mediator."

"For which case?"

"A new one. Two families in Brightmoor. A dead teenager. A lawsuit. A neighborhood that's about to tear itself apart."

"That's heavy."

"Yes."

"I'm in."

"You don't even know the details."

"I don't need to. You need help. I'm in."

There was a simplicity to James that Nadia found both foreign and deeply attractive. He did not agonize or strategize or weigh costs and benefits. He saw what was needed and moved toward it. Next door — literally next door, separated by maybe fifteen feet of winter-dead grass — was the Washington house, a similar bungalow with a similar fence and a front window that displayed, Nadia noticed, a photograph of a young man in a graduation cap.

Marcus Washington. Eighteen years old. Dead four months.

She knocked on the Okonkwo door. It opened on a chain, and a woman's face appeared — suspicious, exhausted, afraid.

"Mrs. Okonkwo? I'm Nadia Khorasani. Judge Dominguez may have mentioned—"

"You're the mediator."

"Yes."

The chain came off. The door opened. And Nadia stepped into a house that smelled like palm oil and grief.

Chinyere Okonkwo was a nurse at Sinai-Grace Hospital. She worked twelve-hour shifts, sometimes six days a week, and she had the particular weariness of someone who spent her professional life caring for others and had nothing left over for her own emergencies. Her husband, Emeka, was an electrician who was currently out on a job. Their daughter, Adaeze, was upstairs and had been upstairs, more or less, since the accident.

Which would not be tonight. But perhaps, she thought, one day soon.

"She's going to be fine," Shirin said. She had been saying this every fifteen minutes since they arrived, a mantra of determination disguised as reassurance.

"She is," Nadia agreed.

"Dr. Prasad is excellent. I looked her up. Thirty years of experience. Over five hundred Whipple procedures. Her complication rate is well below the national average."

"You researched complication rates?"

"I'm a doctor. It's what we do."

"It's what you do. Most doctors probably don't run statistical analyses on their mother's surgeon."

"Most doctors aren't me."

It couldn't, of course. Data could not protect you from a mass on your mother's pancreas. But Shirin's data was her way of coping, the same way Nadia's composure was hers, and they sat together in the waiting room with their different coping mechanisms and their identical terror and waited.

"Nadia," Shirin said, after a while.

"Hmm?"

"Last time you were here — at the house — you said something. You said Maman never lost you. That you were right there."

"I remember."

"I've been thinking about that. And I want to — I need to tell you something. Something I've never said."

Nadia turned to look at her sister. Shirin's face was open in a way it rarely was — the competence and the briskness stripped away, leaving something younger and more fragile underneath.

"When you became a Bahá'í," Shirin said. "I was angry. Not because of the faith — I didn't know anything about the Bahá'í Faith, and honestly, I still don't know as much as I should. I was angry because I felt like you were choosing something over us. Over our family. Over everything we shared. It felt like — you were saying that what we had wasn't enough. That our family, our culture, our religion — that none of it was enough for you."

"Shirin—"

"Let me finish. I know that's not what you were saying. I know that now, intellectually. But at the time, it felt like a rejection. And I reacted — I said things. I took Maman's side, even when I didn't fully agree with her, because it was easier to be angry with you than to be honest about what I felt."

"What did you feel?"

"I'm sorry," Nadia said. "I'm sorry I didn't — I should have tried harder to explain. To include you. To show you that accepting a new faith didn't mean rejecting the old one. Or rejecting you."

"And I'm sorry I didn't try harder to understand."

They sat with it. The waiting room hummed with its waiting-room sounds — the television, the coffee maker, the distant chime of an elevator. A family across the room was playing cards with a frantic, determined cheerfulness, as if fun could be maintained by sheer force of will.

"Do you think she'll ever accept it?" Nadia asked. "Maman?"

Shirin considered. "I think she loves you more than she disapproves of your faith. I think she always has. But she doesn't know how to separate the two. For her, Islam is family. Leaving Islam is leaving family. She can't — she doesn't have a framework for a different way of seeing it."

"I've tried to explain that the Bahá'í Faith doesn't reject Islam. That it honors Muhammad. That it's—"

"I know. And maybe one day she'll hear it. But right now, I think what she needs isn't an explanation. She needs you. Just you. Present. Close. Not mediating, not explaining, not defending. Just being her daughter."

"What truth are the police report and the witnesses disagreeing about?"

"The police say the other driver ran the red. But Mrs. Washington on the corner — not my wife, the other Mrs. Washington — she says Marcus was going too fast. And the Okonkwo girl, Adaeze — she won't talk to anybody. She won't give a statement. That's what bothers me. If there's nothing to hide, why won't she talk?"

"She may be traumatized," Nadia said gently.

"We're all traumatized," Denise said. "But we're talking."

It was a fair point, and Nadia acknowledged it. "You're right. And I can't make Adaeze speak. But I can create a space where, if she's willing, she might be able to share what she experienced. Would that be something you'd be open to?"

Denise's jaw worked. "I don't want to hear her excuses."

"What if they're not excuses? What if she has something to say that you need to hear?"

"What could she possibly say that would—" Denise stopped. Her eyes filled, suddenly and terribly. "What could anyone say? My baby is gone. Nothing anyone says can—"

Robert put his hand on hers. She didn't pull away, which Nadia noted.

"I know," Nadia said. "And I'm not going to pretend that mediation can fix that. Your son is gone, and no process in the world can change that. What I'm hoping we can do is prevent the aftermath from destroying everything Marcus loved. His neighborhood. His friends. His family — both families."

"They're not my family," Denise said.

"They were becoming your family," Nadia said softly. "Through Marcus and Adaeze. Whether anyone planned it or not."

The silence that followed was thick and complicated. Robert looked at his hands. Denise looked at the window. Outside, the sky was the color of pewter, and the houses of Brightmoor stretched in both directions, modest and battered and stubbornly present.

Fatemeh reached for Nadia's hand. "I wish I had tried to understand sooner. I wasted years being angry."

"You weren't wasting them. You were — processing."

"Processing. You and your therapy words. I was being stubborn. That is the word."

"Stubbornness is also a virtue. In moderation."

"In moderation. Yes. I was not moderate." She squeezed Nadia's hand. "But I am here now. And you are here now. And that is what matters."

A scholarship for young engineers. A building project. Something that reflects what he wanted to do."

Denise looked at Nadia. "You want us to drop the lawsuit."

"I'm suggesting an alternative. Not instead of justice. As a different form of justice."

"How is a scholarship justice?"

The kind of evening that most people had all the time and that Nadia, in her forty-three years of careful, professional, controlled living, had almost never had.

"I have something to tell you," James said.

"Okay."

"Bridges offered me a promotion. Executive director."

"James. That's wonderful."

"It's a desk job. Administration. Fundraising. Schmoozing with donors."

"You'd be terrible at schmoozing."

"I'd be the worst. But it's — it's the opportunity to build something. To shape the organization. To take what we do and make it bigger."

"But?"

"But I'd have to give up casework. No more sitting with families. No more — no more of this." He gestured broadly, encompassing some invisible category. "The work. The real work."

"The real work would still be happening. You'd just be enabling it instead of doing it."

"That's what they said. That's not how it feels."

"How does it feel?"

"Like trading a guitar for a baton. Both make music. But one of them involves actually touching the strings."

Nadia set down her bowl. She turned to face him.

"You see, Nadia joon," he had said, when she was maybe eight years old, sitting on her stool, watching. "The plane does not add anything. It removes. It takes away what does not belong until what is left is the truth of the wood. That is all you need to do with anything. Remove what does not belong."

At the time, she had not understood. She had been eight. She had wanted to play with the wood shavings, which curled like ribbons and smelled like a forest. But the words had stayed with her — lodged in her memory the way splinters lodge in skin, working their way to the surface over years — and now, standing in her father's workshop at forty-four years old, she understood what he had been telling her.

It was what she did, every day, at her round table. She sat with people and helped them plane away the accusations and the defenses and the practiced narratives until what was left was the truth. Denise looked at the park — the court, the garden, the playground where Kayla and Adaeze were already pushing little Cyrus on a swing. She looked at the families gathered around, the food being served from Saffron's catering trays, the children running and the adults laughing and the whole improbable, beautiful scene.

"I'm dropping the lawsuit," Denise said.

"Are you sure?"

"I'm sure. Marcus wouldn't have wanted it. He would have wanted this." She gestured at the park. "He would have wanted us building, not fighting."

"That's a brave decision."

"No. It's the right decision. I should have made it sooner. But I wasn't ready sooner."

She walked across the park to where Chinyere Okonkwo was arranging plates on a folding table. She said something that Nadia couldn't hear. Chinyere looked at her, and then the two women — two mothers, one whose child was alive and one whose child was not — embraced. It was awkward and stiff and it lasted only a moment, but it happened, and it was real, and Nadia stood in the spring sunlight watching it and felt something vast move through her, something that was not quite joy and not quite sorrow but was instead the thing that lives at the intersection of both — the recognition that the world is broken and the world is beautiful and these two things are not contradictions but complements, like the two sides of a single coin that is always, always spinning.

The summer came on hot and humid, the way it does in Detroit — a wall of warm, wet air that rose from the river and settled over the city like a blanket nobody had asked for. Nadia kept the windows open in her office and the fan on, and the round table gleamed with a thin sheen of moisture that she wiped down every morning.

The Hawkins-Santos development broke ground in June. Maria Santos gave a speech. Gerald Hawkins did not give a speech but stood in the front row with a rose bush in his hands — a cutting from the one at Marcus Washington Memorial Park, which was itself a descendant of the one Fatemeh had planted — and when the first shovel went into the dirt, he planted the rose bush beside it.

The Mehta Foundation held its first art exhibition in September, in the community room at Saffron. Nineteen paintings, Vikram Mehta's life's collection, hung on walls that smelled like cardamom and saffron. Priya stood by the entrance and told visitors about each painting — the artist, the technique, the story of how her father had found it. Rajesh stood in the kitchen and cooked, and the food was extraordinary, and the paintings were beautiful, and the two siblings moved through the evening with the easy, bickering familiarity of people who have stopped fighting and remembered how to be a family.

The Okonkwo-Washington lawsuit was formally dismissed in August. In its place, the two families established the Marcus Washington Engineering Scholarship, funded by community donations and a matching grant from a local foundation. The first scholarship would be awarded in the spring, to a Brightmoor high school senior pursuing engineering.

Adaeze Okonkwo applied to Howard University. She got in. She told Nadia about it in a phone call that was more laughter than words, and Nadia sat in her office and laughed with her and thought about a boy who had wanted to go to Howard and a girl who was going to go for him.

On a Saturday in November — the first cold day of the new winter, with a wind off the river that felt like a preview of January — Nadia sat at her round table and did something she rarely did. She sat with no case file, no laptop, no phone. She just sat.

The office was quiet. The building was quiet. The city, outside the window, was doing its Saturday thing — people moving through the streets with the unhurried rhythm of a weekend, the coffee shops full, the parks full, the whole complicated, gorgeous, difficult organism of Detroit going about the business of living.

She thought about the year.

She thought about Gerald Hawkins, who had walked into her office as a man against the future and walked out as a man planting roses in it. About Maria Santos, who had learned that community development was not about buildings but about people. About Rajesh and Priya Mehta, who had found their way back to each other through the medium of their father's love. About Imam Hassan and Miriam Yaldo and Derek Chen and Layla Hanna, who had taught her that neighborhoods are not geography but conversation. About Denise and Robert Washington, who had chosen building over blaming. About Chinyere and Emeka Okonkwo, who had opened their door and their table. About Adaeze and Kayla, who had built a friendship on the foundation of shared grief and a playlist of fifty songs.

She thought about her mother, who was alive and cooking and still, miraculously, strong. About Shirin, who called twice a week now and did not ambush. About her father, who had said, "Maybe we do need expanding," and had left behind a workshop full of tools and a daughter who used them differently than he had imagined but who used them, always, in service of building.

She thought about James, who was settling into his new role at Bridges with the determined grace of a man who had traded a guitar for a baton and was discovering that conducting had its own music. Who cooked jollof rice in her kitchen on Wednesdays and whose children had begun to treat Nadia's apartment as a second home — Amara leaving her basketball in the hallway, Chidi leaving his books on the couch, the small domestic accumulations of a family that was forming, improbably, inevitably, out of two broken pieces and a round table.

And she thought about herself.

Nadia Khorasani, forty-four years old, mediator. A woman who had spent her life helping other people find their way through conflict and who was, slowly, learning to find her own way through her own. Who had kept the world at arm's length and was learning to let it in. Who had believed that being strong meant being alone and was discovering that real strength was the willingness to need.

Dear Bahiyyih,

You told me once that the spiritual life is about practice, not perfection. I've been thinking about that all year. I've been practicing — not perfectly, but persistently. Practicing presence. Practicing openness. Practicing the terrifying, exhilarating art of letting people see me.

I sat at my round table today with no work. Just sat. And I thought about all the people who have sat here this year, with their broken things, and how many of them left with something that, if not whole, was at least healing. And I realized that I am one of those people. I brought my broken things to the table too. And the table — this ridiculous, beautiful, round table made of oak and hope — held them.

I'm not finished. I don't think any of us ever are. But I'm further along than I was in January, and the road ahead, while not clear, is at least visible.

Come visit in the spring. You can meet James. You can eat my mother's tahdig. You can see the city. Detroit in spring is something you won't believe.

She sent the email and closed her laptop and sat for a moment longer at the table, her hands resting on the warm oak, feeling the grain under her fingers, the years of growth laid bare by Youssef's saw and made beautiful by his hands.

Then she stood up and put on her coat and walked out into the November cold, into the city that was hers, into the life that she had, over the course of one long, difficult, astonishing year, begun to truly live.

The wind was sharp. The sky was gray. And somewhere in the distance, she could have sworn she smelled roses.
